He flinches away, but Will’s grip on his hand is strong, so he doesn’t get very far. “Mike,” Will tries again, and this time, there’s no mistaking the kindness and worry in his voice. Mike freezes, and Will steps a little closer to his space, but still a safe distance away, far enough to give Mike space to breathe. “You look upset.”

Mike meets Will’s gaze and holds it, doing his damnedest to not look down at his lips; they’re close enough, now, that Mike could just lean in and kiss him, and there are people around but no one’s paying attention, and Mike doesn’t want to be nervous about this but he is, and he can still feel the phantom crush of people around him and it’s all just too much.

Instead of voicing all of that, though, he just nods as he looks away, at something over Will’s shoulder, and says, “We’re still doing this, right?”

also, as we move forward with this fic we’d like to request that you all use a bit of Critical Thinking when commenting, and please don’t compare the modern and past chapters in any sense. regardless of what you might think of the prose, content, or general vibes, it does everyone a disservice to treat this fic like its two separate stories just bc two different ppl are writing it!! this is and always has been one singular story, and it will all mesh together in the end anyway <33 also it’s just not very nice to compare people ever. thanks <3

Will stares at him some more, and because Mike doesn’t know what else to do, he stares back. Will looks good, again, infuriatingly: he’s dressed in a crisp light green polo, his hair neatly swooped back off his forehead, his jeans light-washed and criminally well-fitting. In the warm lighting of the coffee shop, Mike can make out details that he hadn’t been able to in the bar that night, things like the new moles collecting on his cheeks, the light lines starting to crinkle his stupid gorgeous face, the piercings adorning his ears. He’s beautiful. Mike wants to kiss him. Mike might lose his mind.

“I,” Will says, still staring at him, and then he starts laughing.

The heat from before returns tenfold, nearly drowning Will with the intensity with which it washes over him, and the only thing he can think to do is hide his burning face in Mike’s neck with an undignified squeak , earning him a laugh that surrounds him, reaching his ears and vibrating under his fingers. This, whatever it is they’re doing here, is equal parts embarrassing and electrifying, and Will can already tell he’s going to get addicted to it if he’s not very, very careful. Mike’s hair tickles the side of his face, and his skin is warm where Will’s face is pressed against it, and he can smell the soft tang of sweat and cologne and Mike, and he kind of never wants to move from this position ever again in his life. It was one thing to dismiss attraction and brain chemicals when he and Mike were just friends, but the thing about the human brain is that it’s not actually built for acting: there’s no real way to explain to your body that the love you’re pretending to feel hasn’t been buried deep in your bones all along.

Will is a good actor; he’s a terrible liar. That distinction is important, when he thinks about it too hard.
