New Year
New Year was spent at Saltburn staying in an apartment in what used to be the Zetland Hotel. No sea view and not particularly inspiring but it was warm and in a good location. On our first night we ate at our favourite Seaview restaurant - a delicious meal of roast cod with a bottle of Picpoul and an easy climb back up the steps to our apartment - a really lovely evening. We were delighted to find that the Funicular was working for the first time in all our visits and we spent many 拢3.00 on two tickets to take us up and back down and back up and back down. So lovely to be by the sea - swimmers and surfers on New Year's Day. (Dinner on New Year's Eve was at a local Italian restaurant - too noisy for any coherent conversation and we were back at home and in bed by 10.00 - bah humbug.) No resolutions made - just to wish everyone the Pooh bear thought!

Christmas
We celebrated the turning on of the Wood Lane lights with our friend Laura who had come down from Glasgow for the annual Les Girls lunch at Brasserie Blanc in Leeds - such a good time was had by all that no photos were taken! I helped with the decorating of the Wood Lane Christmas tree as part of the Beverley Christmas Tree Festival in the Minster - very cleverly designed by Sue and Emma. Bill and I spent Christmas Day at home - unwrapping presents, eating, drinking, walking and watching tv before driving over to Bramhall on Boxing Day to spend two nights with Markus, Alex and Evelina. Lots of presents and games and eating.

51 Wood Lane
Because we didn't have any overseas holidays this year we decided to spend some of the money saved on looking after the house and by the end of the year we had four new windows fitted - in our bedroom, Bill's office and the back bedroom - how straightforward that all sounds! It also included replastering and redecorating - photos show some of the changes.

Elgar and Ernie
And not to be outdone - our constant companions (unless Evelina is here in which case Elgar disappears for the duration - how does that cat know?); however, Ernie is willing to be gently stroked by a very patient 6 year old.

Maisie
Around this time a new arrival appeared in our world - well actually in Rachel's world but we are hooked too. Maisie is a cavapoo, born on 24 September 2022 and one of the most photographed puppies in Macclesfield. She is an absolute poppet and more photos of her will appear over the years - our starters for ten!

25th - 27th October: Markus, Alex and Evelina visit
We were delighted that M&A&E could at last stay with us in Beverley - we had all been so careful over the last few months not to risk any infection and this was the first time we had got together for a while. They arrived after work on Tuesday and Evelina was soon snuggled in up in bed. The next day Bill had an appointment at Castle Hill with Dr Bashir and was signed off until February - joy! To celebrate we all went to the Floral Hall at Hornsea for a late lunch by the sea. Great disappointment when we discovered that the special Chocolate Caf茅 was closed but ice creams soon cheered things up. A lovely visit.

HOLIDAYS
In October we were due to visit Mandy and Eunan and family in Ireland to say farewell to Aine who was leaving that week for New Zealand. Sadly both Bill and I tested positive for Covid so the visit had to be called off. To say we were disappointed would be understating things.
Later that month we were contacted to say that the ukulele holiday we had planned for the end of October had been cancelled as the Tutor was ill.
And finally we were contacted to say that the accommodation we had booked for our new year stay in Saltburn had been flooded and would not be available. We were offered an alternative but felt the gods were telling us just to stay at home for a wee while longer.

2nd October
Bill's long-held dream of having a play he had written produced in a theatre came to fruition this evening. During lockdown he had written several radio plays and, with the support of Richard our neighbour, one of them - Guardian Angels - was presented this evening in the caf茅/bar area of the East Riding Theatre. The turnout was excellent as was the response to the play which produced some excellent feedback. As Bill said, "This is possibly the coolest night of my life!" Many more to follow we hope.

30th September
The annual Macmillan coffee morning was held across the country today. Because storms were forecast the co-ordinating team had agreed, with his permission, to hold the Wood Lane event in the covered entranceway to Roger鈥檚 estate. Tables etc were set up the previous evening and the next morning, despite gathering clouds, produced many passers-by persuaded to buy delicious cakes, drink freshly made coffee, buy books and / or plants and purchase tombola tickets to win prizes ranging from Jo Malone perfume and a Beverley Arms voucher to a very tiny bar of soap. In total 拢886 was raised.

A delighted prize winner - it only took the purchase of 10 tombola tickets!
