Where Are They Now: Cupitron

One thing that I started to think even as someone who can’t read Japanese is that Rina and Nichika were really good friends and Rina always really looked up to her. But Saika was kind of the mean pretty girl and kind of the stand out. There were so many photos of Rina and Nichika together without Saika on their own social channels but also on the official Cupitron channels...

When I went to their socials now that really seems to hold true. Rina retweets Nichika’s tweets about her current work projects and things like that.

Nichika is also involved in some sort of live theater stage “play” that has 3 different teams of idol-ish girls. I’m not sure on the details/specifics of it though.

Rina doesn’t seem to be doing anything although her twitter bio simply says basically “Working in Entertainment / 19 Years Old”. Although she actually was interviewed by Nichika on the youtube channel she works for, although it was as Rina pretending to be a normal girl on the street being interviewed. Meanwhile Saika seems to be not doing much in the industry at the moment? Which is interesting because she was not only the center of Cupitron, she had the largest social following of the 3 girls and even acted in an anime movie adaptation. I thought she would be the one out of all 3 to be working in the industry... it says she is a University Student. It mentions she also appeared on NHK R’s Law variety show to some capacity though.

I agree. Galaxy Express 999 was a great EP all around from them. Love Science got to be the theme song to B-Science which is so deserved. There are a lot of times where I found myself enjoying Cupitron songs over P*rfume’s latest release(s). Summer Kaijyu releasing right when Cling Cling (not album edit) came out and it was just like “if its this easy to top them then they deserve to be copy-catted lmao”.

Okay maybe more crazy conspiracy theories but...

I just dont understand how Kisspoint put so much effort behind Tsuribit while Cupitron was thriving yet they completely ignored them only to completely drop them.

Tsuribit was spammed on youtube with dozens upon dozens of music videos, lots of singles, the works.

But Cupitron’s music videos always got significantly higher views, Cupitron collaborated with Galaxy Express 999, a classic anime, and the artist of the manga even designed their outfits for the MV and live shows. They hosted a TV show together which was so popular for the channel they decided to announce a rerun of it.

Either something happened behind the scenes with the girls or management just completely went off the rails. Because they announce they will rebrand simply because the techno theme wasn’t working. But then wait a whole entire year to announce “actually, we’re just gonna completely disband”. Saika was starring in movies, Nichika appeared in an episode of a sentai show and did CMs in the meantime. So maybe they felt like Cupitron was hindering their acting careers? But by the time they would rebrand as a new group, did Kisspoint Records just decide to end activities entirely?

ANYWAYS im a mess, this is sad. I loved those girls. I want them to have good careers after this, if thats what they want. Just ugh. I’m mad at Tsuribit forever. Because they got so much content while Cupitron was on hiatus and they disbanded before Cupi, along with just being generally less successful online. Its stupid. Kisspoint Records is just really fucking dumb lmao.

So it seems like Tsuribit also disbanded last month on March 24th...

Cupitron and Tsuribit were the only acts on KisspointRecords youtube.

Could this mean that these two groups disband is because of a closure of Kisspoint Records? I think its highly likely. It is owned by a larger company which probably saw it was not producing big enough hits and decided to shut it down, ending Cupitron and Tsuribit along with it.

With the way idols have to be so PR friendly i doubt we will ever know the true reason Cupitron was dropped. But I always felt something besides sales numbers was in effect behind the scenes considering how active Tsuribit was and how many dozens of videos and singles they would get, despite the fact Cupitrons videos got more views...

Cupitron officially announces complete disbandment.

On exactly the one year anniversary of Cupitron’s THE LAST LIVE where they announced they would end Cupitron and reform as a new group, Cupitron posted to their website and Twitter that, in fact, the group would be completely dissolved with no plans to continue forward.

Would you please share to us the discography of Cupitron?

I guess so. Although some I bought from itunes and some I downloaded elsewhere off japanese sites. I’d probably have to convert them from itunes file type and stuff onto a google drive download… (ive heard theres data encoded into itunes files that people can then track back????? is that true???)

I used to not want anyone to pirate their shit since they were indie but they announced the “rebrand” FOREVER ago and have literally no news or any updates about it so I don’t really see any harm anymore in dumping their stuff just so any person remaining interested can have it.

to clarify, i only have their vocal tracks. I have maybe one or two instrumentals but not all of them. so its not necessarily 100% complete if you’re looking for the instrumentals.

My personal favorites are: Denshi Keisan Ki no Yume, Love Science, Warp Warp, Battery, Uchu de Milkcocoa, and Summer Kaijyu.

The songs from Battery single / EP are probably the most solid overall with Galaxy Express 999 being second. But if you like a more typical cute-idol sound, you may like Unicorn Parade and its B-sides.

A much longer article from natalie.mu about Cupitron’s The Last Live.

The Last Live was a two part show with the first part a “radio program” style talk with a host. It was here that they announced “ending Cupitron”, without revealing the plans to rebrand as a new group.

They then performed the A-side, and B-side of all of their singles. They talked about how it was hard to perform live a lot of times because their songs are made with so much autotune / vocoder / effects / etc., and that even live they would sing into effect microphones. But for this live they said they wanted to emphasize their voices and performed without any effects.

There were also activities between the audience and the members including a drawing competition. One of the drawing subjects being “Pikachu”

They then spoke about the ending of Cupitron and revealed the rebranding as a new unit name with a new music sound.

After a period of inactivity for a while, Cupitron resumed activities from the autumn of 2017, but it was active away from the Kiss Point Records belonging to at the timing of resumption and the Tobeta Bajune who was producing from the debut Report that. It seems like they want to change music directions because they feel that their producers aren’t really versed in techno/electronic music and felt it wouldnt last long encompassing an idol group. Or to be more blunt, they tried to be “trendy” with electronic music but couldn’t keep making content.

Its puzzling to think that they cant find electronic music producers who can keep making techno-ish songs but at the end of the day it seems they would rather rebrand in a more mainstream direction for the better success of the group. 

But this seems to confirm that they are not giving up on the previous songs, and will likely even perform them live for the time being.

Their twitter stated that they will continue to use the name Cupitron for appearances until the new name is officially decided.

This makes it unclear though if they will continue to perform “Cupitron” music even after the rebranding...
