Nie MingJue: Righteousness Without Empathy

Nie MingJue is a character I do happen to like a lot despite his often-regarded unlikeable qualities. His arc is extremely tragic, and while Jin GuangYao is ultimately responsible for his tragedy, Nie MingJue played just as much a role in his own tragic downfall. He sacrifices empathy in the name of righteousness (and Jin GuangYao sacrifices righteousness for empathy), but both Jin GuangYao and Nie MingJue can honestly be said to be two sides of the same coin in that they both have a core of wanting to prove themselves, and it’s this core that destroys them both. 

Let’s begin with this conversation between the two of them: 

What Nie MingJue hated the most were such irresponsible words. Fuming, he lunged with his saber, “You had no choice? Whether or not to do it was up to you, and so was whether or not to kill them!”

Meng Yao dodged, protesting, “Was it really up to me? Sect Leader Nie, if we think from each other’s perspective…”

Nie MingJue had known what he wanted to say. He interrupted, “We won’t!”

Nie MingJue has always prided himself on being righteous, but he’s completely unable to consider things from another’s perspective. Jin GuangYao considers things from everyone else’s perspective–he’s extremely empathetic; however, he doesn’t really use that empathy for anything other than to manipulate to serve himself.

Jin GuangYao, “It isn’t that HuaiSang is a good-for-nothing, but that his heart lies somewhere else.”

Nie MingJue, “Well you’ve really discerned where his heart lies, haven’t you?”

Jin GuangYao smiled, “Of course. Isn’t that what I’m the best at? The only person whom I can’t discern is you, Brother.”

… Women, liquor, riches—he touched none; art, calligraphy, antiques—a pile of ink and mud; the finest green tea leaves and dregs from a roadside booth—there was no difference. Meng Yao tried everything he could think of yet still couldn’t find if he was interested in anything beside training his saberwork and killing Wen-dogs. He really was a wall made of iron, impenetrable by even the sharpest blades…

I was actively posting on AO3 a few years ago and just recently got back into it after a break. The last time I was around it was considered bad etiquette to add long rambling tumblr-style tags to your works, as some poor tag wrangler then had to check every one of them. It seems like now though, they’re not only common but actively encouraged (though I’ve never seen anything official to encourage them). Has something changed?

I’m not a tag wrangler myself, so I’ll invite them to add in their thoughts on this one. 

I think the increase in tumblr-style tags on AO3 is probably due to the increased crossover between the two sites. I actually first found AO3 because of tumblr, and I’m sure I’m not alone, and for people who started out here they might not realize the tagging systems of the two sites are very different. 

Here on tumblr, the tags have been co-opted from their original purpose to serve as a kind of sotto voce commentary space. On AO3, however, they’re still meant to categorize first and foremost.

There are definitely people who love those kinds of tags but there are also many who hate them with a passion - just like everything else fandom-related 😆

It’s what happened to Jews in Germany in 1938 when their passports were declared invalid. That is what is beginning to happen here, now, to Hispanic citizens along the U.S.-Mexico border.

Oh, is it bad to compare the GOP to Nazis? Well, if members of the GOP do not like being compared to Nazis, they should consider not behaving exactly like Nazis.

Hispanic U.S. citizens, some of whom were in the U.S. military, are not being allowed to renew their passports. This is reportedly happening to “hundreds, even thousands” of Latinos, according to a report in the Washington Post. They’re getting letters from the State Department saying it does not believe they are citizens. The government claims their citizenships are fraudulent. “I’ve had probably 20 people who have been sent to the detention center—U.S. citizens,” Jaime Diez, an attorney in Brownsville, told The Washington Post.

The Washington Post also reports on ICE officials coming to citizens’ homes and taking their passports away. This is an escalation from a few months ago, when Americans were detained by ICE officials just for speaking Spanish to one another.

The administration is currently launching an effort to take citizenship from people who they suspect of fraud in obtaining it. Fraud in these cases is exceedingly rare. The last time the government tried to strip people of their citizenship was, according to Columbia Professor Mae , during The Red Scare of the 1950s. As Ngai remarks, McCarthyism is not typically remembered as a good period in American history.

There is good reason to believe that this could portend still worse things to come for the U.S. Hispanic population, unless people begin to speak out loudly, and fast.

1) Get the word out in your home country’s print and broadcast media and internet.  People in the USA really don’t get how suppressed our press has become and it’s only getting worse by the day.  Part of it is getting any one topic to surface long enough above the churn, which is an intentional tactic being successfully used by the political party in power.

2) The one thing that no one is the USA is not seemingly able to do at all is get attention onto the Republican party as a whole for how complicit they are in all the illegal activity.  If anyone can throw some weight in that direction, it’s an elephant in the room that we REALLY need to get lots of attention on.

3) Support sanctions against the US for our human rights violations.

Performative allyship

I see more posts by white people asking if it’s “okay” for them to see Black Panther than I do see them asking for links to charity campaigns trying to help young Black kids see the movie.  which is to say the BP tags have like three of the former posts every day, but I have yet to see a SINGLE post by a white person asking people to send them links for campaigns they can support.  I need someone to realize that this is the pinacle of performative allyship. they’re out here trying to get their hoodpass into wakanda but aren’t ready to let Jerome hold a dollar. The semester is finally over(ish), and with it I can have some time for myself at last! So far, I’ve spent it playing games - amongst them an absolute gem called Seven Kingdoms: Princess Problem. I’ve fallen for this magnificent political otome, and let me tell you, I’ve fallen for it hard. :’) I don’t think I’ve replayed a game as many times as I did the mere demo for this! SO. GOOD. I wanted to do a little tribute, and hey - every fandom needs its own DRRR!! parody, right? I’m kinda sad I wasn’t able to feature everyone, or at least Ria and Sayra since they’re both total cuties! But hey, it was nice to be picking at a drawing again. Uni didn’t leave me with much time nor energy for it.
