INTERVIEW: Luke Medlock (Ever)

Hey there! What’s up? Can you introduce yourself?

Yo, I’m Lukey Medz and I do vocals and guitar in Ever.

So recently you have premiered your debut EP called “My Conscience Is Asleep”… how would you describe its content both musically and lyrically?

Kilka dni temu udostępniliście do odsłuchu Waszą debiutancką EP “My Conscience Is Asleep”…jak opisałbyś jej zawartość zarówno pod kątem muzyki jak i tekstów?

Lyrically its about all the shit that has gone wrong in my life. Musically its really fun though. I’d like to think people can interstate it their own way though. How does it come across to you?

Tekstowo jest to opowieść o wszystkim, co poszło nie tak w moim życiu. Muzycznie uważam, że to dość przyjemne i pozytywne granie. Jednak lubię myśl, że każdy widzi to na swój sposób. Co ty uważasz?

So my first thought when I heart the first version of ‘95 was - “Shed” era Title Fight, but now when the EP is out after the first listen all I had in mind was mix of “Floral Green” by Title Fight + emo band Snowing somehow :D

Więc moim pierwszym skojarzeniem po usłyszeniu poprzedniej wersji ‘95 było Title Fight z czasów płyty “Shed”, ale po pierwszym przesłychaniu całej EPki jedyne o czym myślałem to mix “Floral Green” od Title Fight z emo kapelą Snowing, jakoś tak :D

I’ll take that. They’re cool bands. One of my main influences were Pavement so check them out if you haven’t listened to them.

Może być. To fajne kapele. Jednak moją główną inspiracją było Pavement, obczaj ich jeśli nie kojarzysz.

Haha yeah Pavement is a classic man, and now when you mentioned it I kinda see it in how catchy your songs are! Anyway, there were some line-up changes in your band, right?

Haha tak, Pavement to klasyk, i teraz kiedy o tym wspomniałeś poniekąd to widzę głównie w “chwytliwości” Waszych numerów! Tak poza tym, to mieliście jakieś zmiany w składzie, nie?

Wouldn’t say line up changes but we have a new guitarist. We were a three piece but it was too much pressure me singing alone in a band (first band I’ve done vocals in) and playing guitar. So he took some if the pressure off me.

Może nie nazwałbym tego “zmianami w składzie”, ale mamy nowego gitarzyste. Graliśmy w trójkę więc ciążyła na mnie duża presja jako, że jestem tu jedynym wokalistą (a to pierwsza kapela ze mną na wokali) i gram na gitarze. Tom ściągnął trochę ze mnie tej presji.

Yeah and you can notice that comparing the “old” and the current version of '95! The leads are sick on the EP :) I’ll use this moment to ask about the gear. How did it happen that none of you play a jaguar or jazzmaster haha? I thought there are some “fashion” rules on the scene recently when it comes to guitars, did you notice it too? ;)

Tak, da się to zauważyć, porównując starą i aktualną wersję ‘95! Gitara solowa robi robotę na tej EPce :) Skorzystam z okazji i spytam os przęt. Jak to się stało, że żaden z Was nie gra na jazzmasterze ani jaguarze haha? Wydaje mi się ostatnio, że w tym środowisku mocno panuje “moda” na te gitary, też to zauważyłeś? ;)

Haha good question! I have noticed it but I don’t really like the sound if them. They’re a bit too thin sounding. I just play what I like the sound of not what’s cool. I’m not bad mouthing people who use them though! You like what you like. At the moment I play a Starcaster and Tom plays a Telecaster so they contrast quite nicely.

Haha dobre pytanie! Tak, zauważyłem ten “trend” ale mi nie odpowiada brzmienie tych gitar. Nie jest wystarczająco mocne. Używam tego, co mi odpowiada, a nie co jest cool. Nie mam nic do ludzi, którzy grają na tych gitarach! Każdy lubi co innego. Aktualnie używam Starcastera a Tom gra na Telecasterze, co fajnie ze sobą kontrastuje.

Oh I thought you have a double cut LP !!!

Oh wydawało mi się, że masz LP double cut !!!

Nah man. I used to have a Gordan Smith GS1 which is what you are thinking of but I used a Starcaster on the record.

Nie ziom. Miałem Gordan Smith GS1, to ta, o której myślisz, ale na płycie używałem Starcastera.

Oh ok then! I can hear a bunch of nice pedals on the record too, can you list the gear that you use along with the amp?

Ah ok! Na płycie słychać fajne efekty, możesz wymienić czego używasz łącznie ze wzmacniaczem?

Well the amp I used is an Orange AD140 and the pedals I use are an OCD clone, DigiTech Whammy, Line 6 DL4, Hardwire Overdrive and a bunch of cheap Behringer pedals.

Mój wzmacniacz to Orange AD140 a jeśli chodzi o efekty, to używam OCD clone, DigiTech Whammy, Line 6 DL4, Hardwire Overdrive i kilku tanich efektów Behringera.

Your EP comes out physically on CD via Ambition Records. Tell me how did you start your cooperation with the label and why CD in the middle of “vinyl revival” (I don’t like the term too, don’t worry haha).

Wasza EPka fizycznie wychodzi na CD dzięki Ambition Records. Opowiedz mi jak rozpoczęliście współpracę z wytwórnią i dlaczego akurat CD, podczas gdy winyle są ostatnio na topie?

Well the label contacted us which was cool. I really wanted to do vinyl but the label wanted to test the waters with CDs first. We are planning to get vinyl printed for the next record once we get some money together. It’s so expensive to get them pressed.

Wytwórnia odezwała się do nas, co było bardzo miłe. Bardzo zależało mi na winylu, ale wytwórnia chciała najpierw sprawdzić co i jak CDkiem. Planujemy, aby kolejna płyta wyszła na winylu. No ale to jak już nazbieramy trochę pieniędzy, to strasznie drogie.

Oh yeah I know that… That’s nice that you received this kind of support though! Do you plan any tour or music video to promote the record in the near future? :)

No tak, wiem coś o tym… Ale świetnie, że otrzymaliście takie wsparcie! Planujecie jakąś trasę bądź teledysk promujący EPke? :)

We might do a weekender around the release bit we probably won’t be touring untill next year. I’ve toured in winter before and its gross. In terms of music video you’ll just have to wait…

Możliwe, że zagramy kilka “weekendowych” tras ale z pełną trasą wstrzymamy się do przyszłego roku. Jeździłem już w trasy w zimie, i jest to okropne. Jeśli chodzi o teledysk, będziecie musieli troszkę poczekać…

Ok nice! So to end our conversation I’ll ask you something I have in mind since the very beginning of our conversation… what are your top 3 Pavement songs haha ?

Final Fantasy 7 is dope but THPS 3 sucked…

Final Fantasy 7 jest super, ale THPS 3 było do dupy…

It was the first one I played so maybe that’s why I mentioned it, you may be right, but you have to agree that playing any of the older parts of the series is rad as fuck!!!

To była pierwsza część w którą grałem, więc pewnie dlatego ją wymieniłem…może masz racje, ale musisz przyznać, że granie w każdą “starszą” część THPS sprawia wielką frajde!!!!
