Top 10 2013

Here is my top 10 for 2013. These aren't in best song order but as a playlist (i.e. flow from song to song). 

1.Step Outside - Jose Gonzalez 

Discovered this song watching the Secret Life of Walter Mitty trailer - where it was brilliantly used. Love hearing Noah sing this at the top of his voice. 

2. Wildfire - John Mayer

Summer 2013 song. Memories driving around Byron, windows down, humid sticky weather, chilling to this. Great progression of piano & guitar in the middle of the song is super nostalgic about an America I have never visited...

3. Concert Pitch - Empire of the Sun

Empire doing what they do best. Crunchy melody with layered electronica sound.Unabashedly celebratory pop - and Noah loves it. 

4. Madness - Muse

Not a fan of the album where this single derives, but love this from of Muse. Simple, restrained and measured - something that Muse seem to have lost over the past few albums. This is so wonderfully produced. Great clip too!

5. Carry On - Fun

So Fun. What a superb band. This song was the 'clincher' for me. I had listened to a couple of their songs, and, after researching, queued up their third single off 'Some Nights'. Halfway through, I knew that this was the start of a beautiful friendship...

6. Whispers in the Dark - Mumford and Sons

A few things changing for The Weatherheads in 2014 that had their roots in 2013. Simply put, the Mumford & Son's call to action - let's live while we are young - was important. 

7. King & Lionheart - Of Monsters and Men

I might be paying for this song later in lifeafter showing Noah the video, and realising halfway through that , though fantastical, it is quite scary for a 3 year old. He might be slightly traumatised now. This song could have been their other single, Dirty Paws. Love them both. 

8. Why am I the One - Fun

A glorious homage to warm, 70/80s harmonies and Elton John. Love the progression to the bridge/coda. Superb. 

9. Lover of the Light - Mumford and Sons

Love the percussion on this song - I love the build up and the lead up to the final chorus, and how they subtlety change each chorus ( I am no musician so I can't really describe). The video is superb too - directed by Idris Elba. My film students have really enjoyed figuring out the motifs in the video.

10. Lakehouse - Of Monsters and Men

The big plans of The Weatherhead's for 2014 - moving house and leaving our community of the past 25 years is a big deal. I take this song to be about growing up, where life becomes complicated - and how we would like return to that simple state of childhood innocence which is that house where memories are made, and where home was comforting. For us, moving away is big, sad, terrifying, exciting, adventurous and we embrace those mutually contrasting emotions. Ah, the feels....

So - more than any other year, the Top 10 is dominated by by 3 bands who produced 3 astonishingly consistent albums. At each point during the year when I 'discovered' each album I was convinced this was the best album of the year, only to be surprised again.  Suffice to say - my album of 2013 was My Head is an Animal - Of Monsters and Men (with Mumford and Sons & Fun. coming very very closely behind).
