Tell us about your job role at Gorilla
I have a varied role which is something I’ve always liked. I write a lot of site content and some blog content, I do a lot of analytics and keyword research, and then little bits like helping with CSS. I also write for the Gorilla blog when I get the time.
How did you get into the industry?
I started doing freelance SEO and content writing when I was studying. When I moved to a new city, I had enough work to start doing it full time. I used that to blag my way into the position I’m in now.
What’s your favourite part of your job?
Everyone at Gorilla is friendly, it’s a great working environment.
What do you like to do outside of work?
Spend time with my wife, play chess, play guitar, listen to music, play Football Manager. I also really, really love to eat. Most of my conversations start with what did you have for dinner, what are you going to have for dinner, what should we eat later, did you get anything nice to eat on the weekend, that kind of thing.
Tell us the most interesting fact you know
There’s enough ink in a biro to draw a continuous five-mile line on five miles’ worth of paper. Follow-up fact, if you fold a five-mile square piece of paper as small as it can go, it ends up the size of an average A4 page!
What’s your favourite film / TV show?
Probably classic Simpsons, but I also like Peep Show, Father Ted, Black Books and Shooting Stars.
  What are your favourite tunes?
If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?
Florence. I went once and loved it and I’ve not had the chance to go back yet. Or anywhere in the Caribbean so I can lie on the beach with nothing to do.
What’s on the menu for your last meal on death row?
Unlimited fajitas! Red pepper, onion, whole garlic cloves and fake chicken mixed and charred in a pan with salt, pepper, chilli flakes, onion granules, smoked paprika and some soy sauce. Fresh guacamole, fresh chopped tomato, fresh coriander and lettuce mix, white rice from a rice cooker and proper warm wraps with those little charred spots you get on them when they’re just come from the grill. Hot sauce and salt to go on top. I can down five, sometimes maybe six fajitas in one sitting.

How Google has stepped up their Doodle game for the Tokyo 2021 Olympics
How Google has stepped up their Doodle game for the Tokyo 2021 Olympics
At Gorilla it’s our job to push your site higher in Google’s rankings. We spend hours a day looking at their search results. So, you can hardly blame us when this morning we got a little preoccupied with Google’s brand-new Doodle: The Doodle Champion Island Games.
Google’s new Doodle this morning, celebrating the Olympic Games.
For anyone who spent the last twenty years on the Moon under a rock with their fingers in their ears, Google’s ‘Doodles’ are the changes they make to their famous logo as it appears in search. They use it to celebrate and to commemorate famous people and events.
This Doodle is unique, though: it’s a playable mini-Olympic Games, designed by Studio 4°C!, styled like a 16-bit RPG (think the Legend of Zelda or early 00s Pokémon games). You play as Lucky, the Calico Ninja Cat and explore Champion Island. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to defeat seven legendary champions in different Olympic sports: table tennis, skateboarding, archery, rugby, synchronised swimming, climbing and marathon.
Google’s Doodles have paid homage to the Olympics before, so this is the perfect case study on their shift towards user engagement. Their Beijing Doodles were static images—nice enough. But recent examples have been interactive, like those for Father’s Day and Halloween.
When you find a site through Google, they can tell how long you stayed on the site if you return to search for something else (known as ‘bouncing’). Google seems to prioritise sites that have a low bounce rate. That’s why we help our clients create engaging content that keeps users from clicking away. Even better, interactive content earns links, which helps boost your search ranking too.
Unlike other Doodles, this one will stay up throughout the coming weeks. You can join one of four teams and post your high scores to a global leaderboard—so it really is an international Olympic games all of its own. But even with all that, we can’t do it justice, so watch our lovely Emma playing it below… or head to Google and play it yourself!

Tell us about your job role at Gorilla
I’m the Operations Manager at Gorilla and I’m the main point of contact between the team and our customers. It’s my job to keep the team motivated and report back on the amazing work they do.
How did you get into the industry?
I started off pursuing a career in television journalism, but decided I preferred creating the stories rather than reporting them. A switch to entertainment tv ended up with me coordinating content submissions for You’ve Been Framed. After that my love of UGC story telling led to a Masters in Digital Marketing. Since then, I’ve had a variety of Marketing roles that have covered everything from launching restaurants to providing twitter commentary for ice hockey games.
What’s your favourite part of your job?
The variety! Working with such an amazing array of business means that every day is different and there is always something new to learn.
What do you like to do outside of work?
I really love exploring. Whether it’s local walks or flying off to other countries, I like being out and about. I really enjoy mountain activities, from hiking, to climbing or skiing. It’s great to just get a change in scenery.
Tell us the most interesting fact you know
There is a small town in Northern Spain where everyone won the lottery – except one man.
What’s your favourite film / TV show?
I watch far too much Netflix, so this changes with whatever I’m watching when the question is asked. I do have an obsession with terrible rom coms (bonus points if they are Christmas themed).
  What are your favourite tunes?

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?
Tofino British Columbia. It has always been one of my favourite places. It’s a tiny place surrounded by beautiful scenery. It’s amazing for watching wildlife and it’s somewhere to go to just switch off and relax.
What’s on the menu for your last meal on death row?
Pizza with anchovies, black olives and extra cheese. Followed by mint chocolate chip ice cream.

Tell us about your job role at Gorilla
It’s my job to look after the management and admin aspects of the business, as well as helping with marketing material for the agency and planning campaigns for new and prospective clients.
How did you get into the industry?
I started as a Digital Marketing Exec at an agency over 11 years ago. It was a very small and resourceful team but we had an excellent manager (shoutout to Jamie Lyons!) who taught us to do SEO the right way from day 1. From there I’ve continued to develop and evolve my skill set, working with a range of huge household name brands in the process.
What’s your favourite part of your job?
I love any opportunity to create value & entertainment for our audience and potential clients. We’re really making a push to put out more video tutorials and podcast content, which lets me flex my creative side.
What do you like to do outside of work?
I love weightlifting and focusing on self improvement. I’m also trying to get into something a bit more crafty, so I’ve been sculpting and painting some strange creatures out of clay.
Tell us the most interesting fact you know
There are thousands of Mole People living in the storm drains under Las Vegas. There’s an ex-pornstar down there too apparently. Google it mate it’s odd.
What’s your favourite film / TV show?
Right now I’m hooked on The Sopranos for my TV show. My favourite film is The Crow staring Brandon Lee who actually died in an on-set accident while filming.
  What are your favourite tunes?

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?
Kefalonia for a spot of snorkling & sailing!
What’s on the menu for your last meal on death row?
I would eat the executioner, with some fava beans and a nice Chianti.

Tell us about your job role at Gorilla
I’m the Head of SEO here at Gorilla Marketing – this means that I oversee the SEO team and all of the SEO campaigns that we run, ensuring maximum results for all of our clients.
How did you get into the industry?
Many years ago I had a friend who needed help building websites as a freelancer, we heard about SEO and decided to start learning how we could offer services to make the sites we were creating rank better in Google. Our first big client then poached me to do that for them full time and 13 years later here I am still not quite sure how it all happened!
What’s your favourite part of your job?
Having worked for and with some of the biggest brands in the UK, one of my biggest pleasures in the job is delivering results for the little guys competing against household international brands – I get a warm fuzzy feeling every time I do this.
What do you like to do outside of work?
I used to box competitively, and if I ever manage to get fit enough again after the damage I’ve done to myself in lockdown, I’d really like to have at least one more bout. I also have 3 wonderful children, so most of my spare time is filled finding adventures for the 4 of us to go on!
Tell us the most interesting fact you know
A quarter of all the bones in your body are located in your feet (26 in each foot, 52 total). I’m not sure why that information would be useful, but it’s now yours and can be used with my permission in pub quizzes.
What’s your favourite film / TV show?
Oh wow, far too many to mention! I’m a huge fan of classic British comedy series and can often be found binging my way through those. When it comes to film I love a cheesy old-school action flick or a tense thriller I probably tell people most often that my favourite film is The Usual Suspects, but my guilty pleasures are definitely White Chicks and Pretty Woman (not even sorry).
  What are your favourite tunes?

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?
I’m torn between New York for Christmas, simply because of all the amazing imagery I’ve seen in films over the years, and Mexico for Dia De Los Muertos as I’m fascinated by this festival and love the paraphernalia that goes with it, I even have a sugar skull tattoo.
What’s on the menu for your last meal on death row?
Everything! I love food of all description. Probably something really spicy though, as I love spicy food but get agonising stomach cramps the day after – so at least I wouldn’t have to worry about that!

Tell us about your job role at Gorilla
Along with Dave & Shaz, I work on all the SEO and web projects at Gorilla Marketing.
How did you get into the industry?
It all started with the search ‘how to rank high on Google’. I had two restaurants in Cape Town and understood the intrinsic value of being found at the top of Google and the impact it could have on my business. I became consumed with it all and after the restaurants failed I kept at it.
What’s your favourite part of your job?
Getting that sweet, sweet position 1 ranking.
What do you like to do outside of work?
There’s stuff to do outside of work?
Tell us the most interesting fact you know
Cleopatra lived closer in time to the Moon landing than to the construction of the Great Pyramid of Giza.
What’s your favourite film / TV show?
The Shawshank Redemption and Shrek
  What are your favourite tunes?

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?
The USA is next on the list. I want to go to a shooting range and blow stuff up.
What’s on the menu for your last meal on death row?
A bacon and banana pizza. Seriously – try it.

Tell us about your job role at Gorilla
My role at Gorilla is Digital Marketing Executive. My duties include creating content and marketing strategies for clients and Gorilla’s own social media. I also write blog content and help with the Apeshit podcast.
How did you get into the industry?
After completing a degree in Media Production at the university of Lincoln, I got a job as a runner for Blue Peter. I realised I wanted to learn more about social media marketing, so took a job with Brewdog as a social media “maverick”. After working with Brewdog for two years, I wanted more responsibility and Gorilla hired me.
What’s your favourite part of your job?
I really like how no week is ever the same. It’s such a creative job so one week I could be creating content, and the next writing blog posts or making videos and podcast episodes. It’s always something different.
What do you like to do outside of work?
I love all things horror. So you can usually find me watching scary movies, or playing Amnesia. I also have a podcast about true crime and craft beer (called ‘Dying for a Pint’ if you want to check it out), so spend a lot of my time planning content for that.
Tell us the most interesting fact you know
I know A LOT of facts about alcohol from working at Brewdog, but an interesting one is why a shot is called just that. In the old West of America a shotgun shell cost the same amount as a glass of whiskey. If someone was short on money it became common to exchange a bullet for a drink, which became known as a “shot” of whiskey.
What’s your favourite film / TV show?
My favourite TV show is definitely between Game of Thrones and Doctor Who. I have no idea what my favourite film is so here’s a top three: Wolf Creek, Jurassic Park and Pirates of the Caribbean 2.
  What are your favourite tunes?

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?
I’m pretty sure Japan is my favourite place in the world and I haven’t even been yet. I desperately want to go more than anything! I love their food, culture and anime.
What’s on the menu for your last meal on death row?
I’m lactose intolerant so I’d probably end it in style with the biggest Fettuccine Alfredo you’ve ever seen in your life and a whole keg of Asahi!

Tell us about your job role at Gorilla
Business Development. I’m the first point of contact for new customers at Gorilla Marketing, I take them through a business review to better understand their business and goals. I then take them through a process of understanding who we are as a team, what it is we can offer, and then convince them to make the correct choice and use our services.
How did you get into the industry?
I got into sales straight from school, a friend got me an interview with his older brother in a brokerage firm and I got the job. I worked my way up from a ticket runner to junior broker and that is where I first got introduced to sales.
What’s your favourite part of your job?
I love the feeling of contributing to the company’s growth and hearing from the SEO guys about how happy our clients are and seeing the results we pull in for them.
What do you like to do outside of work?
When I’m not ferrying my two teenagers about like a taxi service, I enjoy chilling out, going to the gym, I do martial arts twice a week, I enjoy taking my lovely wife out for meals, and meeting up with friends. Watching football and having a good drink at the weekend.
Tell us the most interesting fact you know
It’s common knowledge that when you have a hangover your body gets dehydrated and your brain shrinks, an interesting fact is that there is a membrane that attaches the brain to the skull and as the brain shrinks that membrane tugs against the inside of the skull which contributes to your terrible headache, lovely!
What’s your favourite film / TV show?
I really like the movie Pappilon (original 1973 Steve McQueen). I think it’s a great representation of the endurance of the human spirit and our desire to never give up in the face of terrible adversity.
  What are your favourite tunes?

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?
I’d love to go to Japan, I’ve visited several places in Asia but this is next on my list. I find the culture interesting and different from ours. I’ve read a lot about ancient Japanese Samurai culture and a lot of that past has been carried into modern day Japan. A few days in futuristic Tokyo followed by a trip to Okinawa.
What’s on the menu for your last meal on death row?
I’ve been to loads of fancy restaurants and tried lots of exciting cuisines but my last meal would be steak, egg, and chips. It reminds me of Friday nights around my late Grandad Joe’s house as a kid, he would make me steak, egg and chips, and Ice cream soda floats.

5 Things I’ve Learned in My First Month At a Digital Marketing Agency
I have just completed my first month with Gorilla, as Digital Marketing Executive. I’m very new to the marketing industry so it’s definitely been a challenge to absorb as much information as possible. It’s been an awesome learning opportunity, and I’m on my way to becoming a better marketer. I’ve been delving into all sorts, including SEO, marketing strategies and creating boss content. If   this is some of the stuff I’ve learned in my first four weeks, I’m eager for the next four.
  Hashtags are now my friends
Before working in this role I thought hashtags were a bit of a gimmick and they weren’t that important…how wrong I was. After my first couple of weeks, I soon realised how powerful hashtags in a social media strategy can be. They help categorize content and make it discoverable to your preferred audience.
I discovered that you can’t just put in random hashtags, or use a few of the most popular ones on the site such as #love or #instagood. They will attract the wrong audience for you, and if it’s a popular hashtag your content will be buried quickly. Hashtag research is an extraordinary thing, and I have been utilising Ingramer to discover what will be appropriate for specific content. I’ve also been utilising the Instagram search bar, and letting the autofill suggest some tags
Before Gorilla, I used to choose the ones that had millions of mentions and were the most popular. Now I realise that it’s more about making sure they are on brand and fit your audience’s interests. They still need to be popular, just not over-popular; I have been focusing on hashtags from around 10k to 500k.
I have learned that spying on your competitors and similar accounts to your own is a very useful strategy. You can see what hashtags they are using, and get some inspiration for your own posts. I’d say it’s not wise to copy straight from other accounts, as you’d need to adjust them to match your brand.
Managing tasks is a piece of cake
Managing various clients and content hasn’t been something I was familiar with before Gorilla. In my previous role, I looked after one brand and their social content and strategies. It was a bit daunting coming into a role where I had to learn multiple brand guidelines, but it was definitely worth it. I came in on my first day armed with diaries and to-do lists, but ultimately needed something a little more efficient. Me and the other lovely people in the social media department decided to create a workspace on Infinity, where we could organise projects easier and see what everyone else is up to. This definitely made managing clients and workloads a lot easier, and was great for communication.
To add to this, I created calendars for each month of the year with key national days that are relevant to our clients. I’m going to make them my desktop background each month so I can see all of the upcoming events, and can plan my content around them. It was a simple idea, but has really helped me come up with content ideas, as well as remembering to schedule posts ahead of time instead of coming up with something on the day.
  We made a podcast!
The world of podcasting was brand new to me. I never even used to listen to them, and now not only am I hooked, but I’ve been learning all about how to make them from scratch and why they’re so amazing! We already had the appropriate equipment and software to record, it was just planning the perfect content, and finding a good base for our RSS feed. Then we just needed to get it uploaded on all the popular streaming sites such as Spotify and Apple Podcasts.
Podcasts are amazing to include in a content strategy because they have relatively low competition. There’s only a handful of podcasts like yours and they can have thousands of listeners who are looking to listen to a similar niche. They’re also getting super popular with millions of people tuning in each week, so now was the perfect time for the Apeshit Podcast to air. I’m really excited to see where the podcast will go as it’s only a few weeks old, but I’m expecting great things. I may be biased, but it’s definitely worth checking out, you can listen to it here.
Brand guidelines will make your life easier
Making a brand pack or guidelines for your client is just life changing. It saves so much time, and ensures that you have consistent content and a clear understanding of the brand. These guidelines include everything from a colour palette and typeface to content templates and audience demographics. Creating brand guidelines has really helped me understand our clients more, as well as their goals and values for their social media platforms. We used Canva to create the packs and can easily share them with members of the team. This means we’ll all have consistent content and know who their audience demographic is.
With a clear understanding of the brand, we know what the key message to get across is, and their audience will remember the brand. Doing this research will ensure that we get it right the first time, because everyone has a clear understanding of who the brand are, which will have a greater influence on the audience.
  They really know their stuff
It’s been so refreshing coming to work in a company full of experts who are willing to let me pick their brain every day. Gorilla is home to some amazing people, who have many years of experience in the digital marketing industry; with everything from SEO, web design, PPC and social media.  Everyone knows what they’re doing, and keeps up to date with the latest trends and strategies online. They know exactly what it takes to rank your site on Google, and are always striving to provide the best services, and be in the know.
I came into this job excited and ready to learn, and it’s so great to be really pushed and encouraged to develop. I’m motivated to speak up and ask questions about things I want to learn about, or tasks I’d like to shadow. It’s definitely been the perfect environment to learn in, and I’m only going to keep pushing myself further. It’s so rewarding to work for a team who genuinely care about their work and the business.
  In Summary
After my first month I can safely say I’ve learned a lot, and I’ve honestly had a great time. I’m excited to see what will happen in my second month, and how I can continue to push myself. We’ve got a few exciting projects lined up, so keep an eye out on our socials.

The Coming Google CWV Update
Brace for impact! The Google Core Web Vitals update is coming soon! The update will focus heavily on user page experience – utilising the Core Web Vitals from Page Speed Insights to ascertain if a web page has passed their very strict tests. The toughest part of this update is that your site has to be performing for 28 consecutive days before it passes – it can’t be checked once and told it’s all good! Currently, the focus is on three aspects:
Largest Contentful Paint (LCP): measures loading performance. To provide a good user experience, LCP should occur within 2.5 seconds of when the page first starts loading.
First Input Delay (FID): measures interactivity. To provide a good user experience, pages should have a FID of less than 100 milliseconds.
Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS): measures visual stability. To provide a good user experience, pages should maintain a CLS of less than 0.1.
Source
This is represented by the tools in in a neat little speedometer style report, which looks like this:
According to Google, anything in the top 75th percentile means that a page has passed and the theory is that it won’t be affected by the update. The rumblings in the Manchester SEO community seem to be that this update is going to be a massive one – the last time Google gave such a lengthy notice of an update like this was back when it first rolled out Mobilegeddon, which was back in 2015 – and nothing has quite shook the results pages up since then.
Fortunately though, if you are a Gorilla Marketing client – we’re all over this. We’ve already boosted our own website and are about 75% of the way through our clients.
