Hello web heads I’m back on the look out to try and get in contact with Mr Craig Richardson. I have two businesses he may have worked at to call and see if he works there/if anyone can get me in contact with him so let’s home because I really don’t want to keep basically cyber stalking when I just want to send an email 😭

Hiiii handful of followers I’m back on the webheads grind and am going tooo try and contact the marketing director of the company/line! He now works for an NFL alumni thing but he’s one of the people mentioned on the archived website and First Ideas as well as the Video Vegetables companies are listed on his past experience!! I would love to try and email him to see if I can get any more info on the line or what happened to the dolls that never got good pictures (and goddd ultimately I would love to get my hands on some if they’re still around!)

Webheads Press Release, 9/11/2001 (yeah…) from the archived iwebheads.com
HWH CHOSEN TO REPRESENT NEW LINE OF COMPUTER DOLLS
Inventor of the Popular Couch Potato Doll Creates a Presence "On" the Computer and the Net
September 11, 2001- HWH Public Relations/New Media is pleased to announce it has been chosen to represent New York-based First Ideas' latest creation, The WEBHEADS. These adorable, soft plush dolls have heads that are computer monitors with screens that double as picture frames. WEBHEADS, personalized with a favorite photo, are designed to sit atop computers and are sure to become collectables for your "A" list.
First Ideas, as its name implies, has always been in the forefront of market trends with creations such as the hugely successful Couch Potato dolls, which kept millions of television viewers company while engaged in their favorite activity. The premise for the WEBHEADS is similar: colorful, fun, soft-bodied dolls with photos in their computer screen picture-frame heads, that serve as companions through the long days and nights of computer isolation. They'll give you something to smile at when you come up for air.
The WEBHEADS dolls include personalities with computer and Internet double entendre names, such as Dot e.COM, The Luv Bug, Web Surfer, Auntie Virus (who better to protect your computer from nasty infections?) and the classic Web gossip Queen, Cookie. WEBHEADS can be customized by putting your daughter's picture into Baby G-URL, your pet Fido's pic into WEB Hound, and some of you gals might even know an E-Male who communicates effortlessly, whose picture you'd like on top of your computer.
First Ideas chose HWH because of HWH's experience with other clever and successful toy and doll phenomenons, including Cabbage Patch dolls and Cabbage Patch videos; 2XL, the first interactive robot learn and play toy, developed by the renowned toy inventor Michael Freeman; and the former Leisure Concepts, run by AL Kahn, the licensor of Pokeman.
Craig Richardson, creator and CIS (Chief Idea Surfer) of First Ideas has spent years creating and developing ideas for his and other companies. Richardson sees the nearly 100 million people using computers in the United States today (over 30 million new PC's will be shipped this year alone) as evidence of a niche to fill when it comes to personalizing and creating something fun while working or surfing. Since computers are used by every age and social/ economic demographic globally there's a WEBHEADS doll for everyone.
So come on, join the fun, which WEBHEAD doll fits your personality? Visit the WebHeads Web site, at www.iwebhead.com and find out.
#besides the fact of the date this was published this sheds some rlly interesting light on the marketing process for the line#being targeted at a large group and attempting to fill the computer niche bc of how the internet picking up was seen at the time#webheads#webheads dolls#web(head)site#webheadsleuthing

The webheads are really interesting to me because of the niche they occupy as a product- in my opinion, their actual function and the way they're marketed (pun-heavy, quite old fashioned copy) would appeal more to older people, and yet their entire concept is based around something that would probably be patronized more by the young. Do you think the doll line might have been more sucesssful if they leant more into one of these markets? Obviously the former would be difficult considering the "web" aspect of the product, but it's interesting to think about. I can kinda see them as a novelty plush akin to neopets, you know?
No absolutely, and I think it’s really related to the time they came out and how the internet was viewed. There’s some press releases/interview type things I’ve found on the site I plan to post, but I think you’re right ab the market. They were meant for office workers and to jump on the rise in computers being owned by people, but came at a time when the usage of the internet n computers as a whole was not understood how it is now, it was only starting, and there was no way for them to fully expect what it would become. I think they definitely ended up in a limbo as you said, as adults usually aren’t as into cute plush gimmick products, but picture frames being a main piece of the webheads also wouldn’t really appeal to kids. I think maybe if they’d pitched them mainly as funny internet-themed dolls for kid play, like neo pets like you said, that could double as sitting frames, it maybe could’ve been more successful. A kind of “for the kids but can be for the parents too” type thing, maybe incorporating online games or activities.
It feels like a line of toys that came out in the perfectly liminal time to be forgotten. They were trying to capitalize on something they couldn’t conceptualize and as a result who it was pitched to was messy and unclear, and they came out when the internet was still getting its footing and as such documenting and history of a lot of stuff was lost.
It almost reminds me of how animation has developed in the western sphere, how people at the start of its rise didn’t see it becoming something seen as a “kid” thing, but that’s what it became, and in the process of that change a lot of movies ended up missing the sweet spot of where society was, and that seems like webheads to me. Close but no cigar, just off the mark enough to not fully appeal to people and not make a lasting impression.
#the way you worded it made sm sense idk if I ended up answering ur Q but I hope I did#bc like computer ideas from the early 2000s seem so retro to us now and it’s a whole old person thing of not knowing how to use them#but at the time n how webheads r talked ab on their site it feels like trying to get in on new tech and a new trend#baby ideas of the internet and baby ideas on who would b into it#it’s a contemporary thing from an adult perspective pitching things to adults but with a very kiddy vibe#and that dissonance comes together to make somth that didn’t work during that boom in the early 2000s as tech n development exploded#n tried to figure out where trends would land before they did#webheads#webheads dolls#gotta make an ask tag#web mail

“I LOVE YOU.” She is sweet and very, very tempting. But she has an edge to her that can be dangerous at times if she is not taken care of. She has a long track record of causing MEN, we mean programs, to perform erratically, produce incorrect results, or crash. The term bug was coined when a real insect was discovered to have fouled up one of the circuits of the first electronic computer. The Luv Bug is alluring.
