What is ‘Wellness’?
Good question.
Wellness, as we’ve collectively come to understand it today, is some sort of high-bred combination of fitness, attractiveness, aspiration, and the idea that it’s all accessible via the right capitalistic channels. Wellness feels like an extremely 21st century concept, but it has roots in health and lifestyle practices from cultures all over the world and across millennia.
Here at the Third Edition Health & Wellness Collective we think of wellness as a comprehensive and inclusive conceptual movement focused on the active pursuit of physical, mental, emotional, and social health. Wellness is the pursuit of Maslow’s highest need: Self Actualization. And it’s just about impossible to be self actualized if you’re not feeling, moving, and thinking well.
We believe deeply in the idea that wellness is for everyone! We believe that we all deserve the gift, from ourselves, of the pursuit of health and happiness.
The practice of wellness can manifest in myriad ways. From exercising rigorously, and completely changing your diet, to simply making an effort to get outdoors more often, or even just trying to drink more water!
‘Wellness’ can sound inaccessible, weird, or just plain dumb. It’s not.
Wellness isn’t just for other people.
Wellness is for us too.

Quote
In play you realize simultaneously the supreme importance and the utter insignificance of what you are doing. You accept the paradox of pursuing what is a once essential and inconsequential. In play you can totally commit yourself to a goal that minutes later is completely forgotten.  Play, then, is the answer to the puzzle of our existence, the stage for our excesses and exuberances. Violence and dissent are part of its joy. Territory is defended with every ounce of our strength and determination, and moments later we are embracing our opponents and delighting in the game that took place. Play is where life lives, where the game is the game. At its borders, we slip into heresy, become serious, lose our sense of humor, fail to see the incongruities of everything we hold to be important. Right and wrong become problematical. Money, power, position become ends. The game becomes winning. And we lose the good life and the good things that play provides.

Quote
One of the beautiful things about running is that age has no penalties. The runner lives in an eternal present. The passage of time does not alter his daily self-discover, his struggles and his sufferings, his pains and his pleasures. The decline of his ability does not interfere with the constant interchange between him, his solitude, and the world and everyone around him. And neither of these happenings prevents him from challenging himself to the ultimate limit, putting himself in jeopardy, courting crisis, risking catastrophe. Because he refuses to look back, the runner remains ageless. That is his secret, that and the fact that his pursuit of running is in obedience to, in Ellen Glasgow's phrase, 'a permanent and self-renewing inner compulsion.
