god i absolutely love and kin burning spice and i think that both devsisters and big part of the community robbed us from the depth of his story and character

HE WAS NEVER ABOUT BOREDOM IN ITS USUAL MEANING. HE WAS ABOUT DEPRESSION, SUICIDE AND LOSS OF MOTIVATION.

first of all let's all accept the fact that there are different kinds of ruthless villains that go against the main, usually beloved, characters. there are those fueled by only insanity, spite, bloodlust and etc., and there are those who are fueled by not only these, but also their difficult past, trauma and mental problems

if the latter didn't exist, we wouldn't have other beasts as minimum, we wouldn't have someone like am from ihnmaims, revenant from apex legends, black dahlia from skullgirls, most antagonists of silent hill series, characters from madness combat (especially tricky). little to no people would like them or kin them

and burning spice is a character of the traumatized villain type, but for some reason a lot cut his entire past and current COMPLEX personality off him, making his character be only "the bitch that ripped golden cheese's wings off"

of course it's because a character like him is not for everyone, but partially it's also because of golden cheese's bootlickers, that love her in all aspects and don't consider any of the possible bad things she had done, hating on every character that hurt her. believe me golden cheese is also a complex character and her having trauma doesn't make her a saint to pray on, so having trauma doesn't make burning spice an absolute unredeemable horrendous being that never had positive traits. i'm not a fan of golden cheese but i respect and appreciate how complex and well-written she is, and how better of a protagonist and character she is compared to white lily as example, so i hope people also start respecting burning spice's writing and versatile personality

moving on back to burning spice. lets dig down and see the roots that made everything go wrong

he and other beasts were the first sentient and, i highlight it, IMMORTAL cookies EVER judging by what the game said. they were immediately given immense power that they had to use in order to grow CIVILIZATIONS and keep them intact for EONS later. their shoulders were pressed by unimaginable duty and responsibilities they never asked for.

of course they all got insane, especially because in later years when they already had other cookies to talk to, basically a society, and society is almost always a negative impact on any person.

being a herald of change is extremely difficult just like everything else other beast cookies were. and i hate that devsisters showed so little of that. it would make sense with someone like shadow milk due to how unpredictable, secretive and unstable he is, but not with burning spice. yes, he also has no reason to share his backstory with us, but during the beast-yeast chapter it was portrayed as golden cheese's glimpse in the long past, hallucinations of sorts, so there was already no word of burning spice about getting into his past and trying to open him up. so we were ROBBED of his story.

every person who deems burning spice as not valid: analyse your whole life right now. are you constantly in some washing machine ahh life situation, or is it mostly calm?

a lot would say mostly calm, and believe me, when you have no addictions to distract yourself with and you actually keep pondering on why you exist, this lack of "washing machine", a distraction too, in your life will make you go mad.

burning spice is exactly about that. he is a sentient being capable of complex emotions. of course when he created his first ever civilization he most likely got attached to it in any way; in a proud way, affectionate way, authoritarian way and etc.

now imagine him losing everything, just like golden cheese did. tragic? yes. horrible for his emotional state? absolutely.

so it's only logical that he'll try to create another civilization, with his powers of change trying to, as example, make their lives better, life span anyhow longer. and yet it died and fell too.

and i bet he tried millions times. always changing something. but it never really changed. he gave his heart away to what he made, and yet, it failed and completely crumbled. just like everything else.

tell me, who would not go mad? surely, some easily motivated person wouldn't, and i think burning spice was also motivated at first. but in the end, all motivated people, without any result but hundreds of attempts, will burn out. burning spice did too.

when you're drained emotionally and most likely depressed, you oftenly close yourself off, I'm speaking from experience. you stop caring, you stop getting attached. and oftenly it's not only about you not wanting to talk to anybody, it's about the pain you'll again feel when this something you hold dearly leaves or worse, dies. you try your best for it to never happen, even if harms you in the end even more.

burning spice could just become more callous, aggressive and reckless due to the same reasons. to not let himself be hurt straight to heart again.

in addition, his servants tried to constantly please him. and it was NOT only because he was actually intimidating and extremely powerful, but it was also just to please him and maybe get some benefits. why do you think both shadow milk and mystic flour turned out the way they did? other cookies being selfish in their relationships.

that didn't make him a spoiled baby, but rather showed him that no matter what he does and what he changes, all cookies remain shitty and not genuine to him just because he is himself. that he is a failure that can't change things for better.

so it's already a bunch of extremely valid reasons for him to crash out and go ape shit that a lot just ignore.

lets now go to the surface level from the roots. why destruction?

addictions bring depressed people emotions, other than drowning sorrow, emptiness, apathy and etc.

destruction and fighting = adrenaline. adrenaline = fun and excitement. fun and excitement = something burning spice probably felt rarely. and thus, destruction and fighting = what to do to stay happy and forget about how pointless his actions and life were.

and destruction really varies. burning spice actually had control of how he brought doom upon everyone. he never had control of the cycle of life, he never had control of his citizens that died on his eyes without ability of resurrection.

and control of action is what makes one feel far better and ignited by interest in life. no wonder burning spice started just destroying everything he and others made. the adrenaline satisfied him on short term. but short term means need for more later, so yes, more destruction. not everyone is a psychology major, so it's absolutely normal that he didn't know better and healthier coping mechanisms, especially as the first fucking cookie to exist, unlike the ancients.

he destroyed to see the pain of others because this pain of others dulled his own and made his life more bearable. made him feel alive and changing again. that's how a lot of bullies are born btw.

depression often brings the thought of suicide. and it's hard to control, speaking as a person with a few attempts. burning spice basically proves he has these thoughts with his phrases. and thought that everything is useless too. it's just that he doesn't show it directly, and instead copes by the adrenaline addiction or masks it by fighting until death all the time. i'm pretty sure he would say stuff like thanks if killed for real. and this gratitude won't be only for an exciting and hard battle.

now let's move to the final part, the leaves of consequences that came with the rotten roots.

he and other beasts were sealed in the tree. for god knows how long. all while remaining alive and conscious. they were prisoners with half their power taken away.

OF COURSE they would be far more unhinged than before. all of you in this situation would be.

i'll make an analogy.

a teen is deeply troubled emotionally. they abandon school, get into fights as example. as punishment, their parents take away their things and give them away to their much better and "showing off" little sibling.

the teen's mental state is now even worse. they're not only furious at parents that most likely don't consider their feelings and limit their self-expression. they're also hateful and bitter to their sibling, a third party not in conflict at all.

they will release a lot of their anger on the sibling, and only later at the parents, when they are separated and independent.

that's literally the situation with the beasts, but theirs is more serious and exaggerated, because they're literally immortal gods with incomprehensible powers. the parents are witches and the siblings are ancients.

the full souljams were rightfully theirs. but the ancients also deserve their parts of the souljams, as they worked hard to actually do good and tried their best to not be corrupted, falling to it only after the war. the responsibility lies in hands of the witches, and both beasts and ancients are their victims, with the ancients suffering the most as mediators of sorts.

burning spice is also a victim who suffers just like everyone else, but hides it better.

of course he wanted his souljam back like all other beasts, and not only to be in full power again, but also to have his revenge on his unwanted "sibling" golden cheese and later the witches, reference to the allegory.

why be so sadistic? he. was. sealed. for. god. knows. how. long.

he couldn't satisfy his addiction, he couldn't feel a single drop of happiness. who wouldn't be violent and dangerous in this scenario? believe me, shadow milk, mystic flour, eternal sugar and silent salt (even if not released) are all "so sadistic", just in their own ways, some going for more mental than physical side. they all behave disgustingly.

when you don't get what makes your days more bearable in long time, you oftenly go really really angry. you go ballistic.

as i said before, the ancient are mediators. golden cheese just fell under his rage, that's it. you think he has some kind of extremely intimate mega personalized feelings for her? no. he definitely has more personal conflict with her than with others, but he hates her like a "thief", like an "ally" of the witches, not like golden cheese. when they fight later, he doesn't see her as a person either, just an impressive opponent to toy with. change golden cheese to hollyberry, to pure vanilla, to dark cacao, he'll gladly torture and kill them all. he'll gladly go damnatio memoriae (faith reference haha) on all of them.

no beast is obligated to baby the ancients. i absolutely loved how burning spice tortured golden cheese and i hoped he would kill her in the end. he didn't unfortunately, but at least i'm happy he's not dead (he's immortal so like no shit sherlock but yk what i mean)

hating him just because he acts like a lot of traumatized people do is stupid. just disliking him and finding him not fit for you favourites? absolutely valid and respectable.

i think if he had better relationships with other beasts he could start his therapy of sorts. no, not to become a good person, a better version of himself. but to feel better. he's capable of thoughtful dialogues, so it would be interesting to see him talking with someone like cilantro cobra or especially nutmeg tiger about what bothers him. not fully open up, no, but at least show hints of what actually hurts him. i think nutmeg tiger would listen, even if she's his bootlicker too. i think she would listen genuinely and think about it, and try to help him. probably by destructive methods like more violence, but they both would feel better in different ways.

besides, remember their dialogue in the kingdom. she is interested in when he's distressed or thoughtful. and he mentions a kingdom he first.... i think it's about the kingdom he first created. our kingdom seems peaceful and lively, right now boring to him, but back in the days something that he would cherish and falling of which i doubt he would ever forget or mentally recover from.

burning spice is my man and i hope devsisters actually take him seriously in later updates so more people open his eyes on him and start appreciating him.

he is a horrible person, yet one that still has something good in him deep inside. being horrible is not his only character trait.

You know, the cookies of darkness is kinda like a cult. Cause most of them were taken in at their lowest of lows or had no other choice but to join. So here's what I think of em. (under the cut)

And I'll name most of em off.

Licorice Cookie: Dude was literally an outcast in every sense, it's assumed that his tribe literally fluffing DIED and that the magic he was good in (necromancy) is relatively frowned apon. He was an outcast, and likely starved of attention due to having no peers around him that he could really connect to beyond VERY surface level things, and Dark Enchantress probably took advantage on it, I could see him being given praise for his magic early on, but never getting any of that attention later. That very want for attention from one of the few who actually expressed any interest in his talents being the only reason he's still around.

Poison Mushroom Cookie: That's a child, probably an orphan, possibly alone because of their poisonous shroomies driving most away. Similar case to Licorice, the kiddo got attached to the ones around them and doesn't want to leave.

Red Velvet Cookie: He was born into this, came out the oven without an arm, and is (what I'm assuming) part cakehound, he was born an outcast, and likely has nowhere else to go. Red Velvet clearly cares about the cakehounds and soldiers more enough to keep him to stay. He has little other choice at this point.

Pomegranate Cookie: She was literally trained to be a high priestess to her village, and then learned that she was fated to effectively destroy it. I'm betting my right leg that she was probably DEVASTATED when she learned that, to learn that everything she has worked up to, she would betray. She trusted the mirrors vision over her own wants, and so she left to serve darkness, and (like Licorice Cookie) was given praise at what she done to her village, but that praise became less and less frequent over time. the combination of her having no other place to go, effectively destroying all allys she could have, the same starvation of praise, and her blind trust in Dark Enchantress Cookie leaving her unable to leave, not without a fight.

Dark Choco Cookie: I think this one was pretty simple. He was already pretty vulnerable and broken down on his own after losing everything to a sword he's stuck with. He got manipulated and brainwashed into thinking he had no other chance and that he was stuck forever. No lovebombing, no praise, just manipulation from somebody with a silver tongue. (His abandoning of the C.O.D. is something that could happen to any of the rest, but his already fragile connection made it a lot easier for him to break ties.)

Strawberry Crepe Cookie: A (possibly robot) child who thought they were abandoned by their kingdom(and which they sadly kinda were). They were alone with only robots to comfort them, do I even need to explain this?

Matcha Cookie: Like Red Velvet, but kinda worse. She was deemed a failure and had EVEN LESS TIME TO GROW OR DEVELOP BEFORE BEING THROWN INTO WORKING FOR THEM (At least, I'm guessing she didn't), plus she didn't have cakehounds to connect with, just her plants.

Butter Roll Cookie: Dude was kiddnapped. Need I say more?

Affogato Cookie: If he didn't join, he would probably be dead. Again, need I say more?

So far, I think this kinda matches up with a cult, but if anyone has a better definition for it, do tell in a reblog or comment.

That's about it, if any more of these guys come out, I'll update this.
