I don't know if you guys are active on this blog anymore but, I just wanted to say that absolutely love your story. When I heard you guys were turning it into an actual book I got excited.

I originally first read the fanfic back in 2019. I've come back so many times to reread it.

Did you guys plan to ever add Sabo into the original plot of the story? Honestly, always wondered how the rest fanfic would've been, probably pretty amazing <3

I know it’s going to be a while because writing a book is really freaking hard, but I was wondering if you had an inkling at how long it’ll be before you publish?

Years, probably :’’D I thought I would have more time to work on my part this year but then the pandemic hit, work got hard, and I’ve been taking more commission work so finding time is hard. But I want to try to put more time into it in 2021 if everything calms down for just, like, 5 minutes.

I want to be able to post more concept art in the future if that happens ><

Hey. Do you guys have a release date/plan? Like would it be a few months or a few years? Or is it still up in the air? And another important question, was there ever going to be a Sabo is op version? I just really want to know!

Veeery up in the air. It’s a process, and a slow one, but I would suspect years.

There was! Actually, the funny story with Sabo... I suppose spoilers don’t matter since the new version is different. Sabo was going to be Dragon’s reincarnation/next life. Dragons are one of the 4 immortal species, but each off those 4 have their own method of reincarnation. While dragons are technically reborn like the rest, they don’t become themselves exactly, but something new, so dragon death feels more permanent than, say, the death of a phoenix. He was also going to be born as the new Seiryuu.

I check on this tumblr every once in a blue moon and I just realized you that you are continuing your work on the world of IWWLB, and it‘s a revamp too! I‘m crying tears of happiness over here you two are what introduced me to the world of fanfiction

Ahh thank you!! It’s really slow going because we’re older and have more responsibilities, and I have a personal project that I’m writing first which is also slow-going, but Immortality is something I always have my thoughts on.

I'm really interested, but I want to know how different it is going to be from the op version. A big reason why I loved it was because of the children and adult interactions. Is that still going to be apart of it? I'm definitely going to read either way. I'm excited for it :)

The main difference is going to be moving away from One Piece designs and personalities. The story we are actually telling is going to be extremely expansive and breaking away from the fanfiction version allows us better flexibility in our story telling.

This doesn't mean you will miss out on the interactions with the children. Far from it, in fact! I'd even go so far as to say the children have wormed themselves further into the story, and I didn't think that was actually possible.

Hello! Since you incredible writers are creating an original story, will there still be updates of the fanfic or will it be discontinued?

Hi! As mentioned previously, we will not be continuing the fanfic version of the story. There are too many things about it that need to be fixed and there were too many words used with too little progression of the story to really justify it. We’re focusing entirely on the original rewrite and have revamped both the world and the characters to match our new focus. If you’re interested, you’re welcome to stick around and we’ll post more information to this blog when we can, but we totally understand if you’re more interested in a version with OP characters than an original cast <3

Kallai - Suzaku, The Phoenix

So, we’ve got concept art for Suzaku for the big Immortality revamp and a little bit of information to go with him. This is Kallai, one of the acting Saint Beasts and the replacement for the fanfic’s Marco. In a lot of ways, he’s similar to his predecessor, but there are some differences in personality. Anyway, here’s a little bio for the blue chicken!

Name: Kallai, Kai - Familial name used by family and close friends. Species: Phoenix.

Physically, Kallai is the second eldest Saint Beast in the current timeline, with Byakko the tiger being the eldest and Genbu the tortoise the youngest. There is no currently acting Seiryu and the dragon clan is waiting for one to be named. However, Kallai has had the most rebirths out of all of the Saint Beasts, so if past lives are to be counted, he’s by far the oldest. This is his 4th rebirth and 5th life. Kallai’s last rebirth occurred at the end of the last war shortly before the last Seiryu died. He was raised by Enoch, a giant of great renown known for holding up the sky when it fell. Being the last of his kind, Enoch has a penchant for adopting strays from other clans who have nowhere to go. This is how Kallai comes to know the tiger, his natural enemy, as his brother.

Kallai is a very stoic man. He does his best to put duty before everything else, but phoenixes are known to be easily swayed. He has a dislike for humans, in part due to their role in the war, and has kept a comfortable distance from them since childhood. Kallai was named Suzaku partway through his first life. During that first life, he had no one from his own clan willing to care for him and was sent to live with harpies in a land on the very edges of the mythos realm, right by the human world. 

The Phoenix Clan

Once known as the most powerful predatory bird mythos in the realm, the phoenix clan has become more ornate in the advent of the Saint Beasts and Suzaku in particular. When the mythos realm came together, a lot of predatory mythos lost their primary prey. The phoenix clan was no exception. Today, they’re a far more docile creature than their ancestry shows. Kallai is old enough to remember how the clan was before, though.

Not every species of mythos is immortal. The phoenix is one of the few. Their average rebirthing cycle is 500 to 1,000 years, but any number of circumstances can shorten that timeframe from sickness to unnatural death or even stress. After death, the phoenix’s body turns to ash. Through their ashes, a new egg is formed from which their new form will emerge. After emerging from the egg, the hatchling is vulnerable. It must rely on others for food, water, shelter and safety until reaching maturity after 100 years. During these formative years, phoenixes risk a true death. They heal slowly and can’t rebirth if killed. After reaching maturity, the phoenix young will come into its power and with it, will recall its previous lives. There are also instances where the eldest phoenixes will not be reborn after death. No egg will be born from their ashes, and they experience a true death.

I love the change! I mean I’m a One Piece Fan and all but “Immortality is what we leave behind” was always more original than One Piece, in my opinion. And it frustrated me to no ends that even after I greedily read through 100k+ words I still had to idea where it was going. And now, you aren’t limited to the One Piece casts and fanfiction-reader’s expectations, you can just create characters as you see it fit! I’m really excited but I can wait �� Anyways, thanks you!

A big issue with the fic was just how many words were wasted on just getting the very start of it down! We’re working to fix that in this rewrite. We’ve talked, and the entire story will likely take place across 3-4 different books because we still need more than 100K to tell the story in full (it’s just too big), but the fact that we’ll have separate stories with their own beginnings, middles, and ends is going to help the plot move along so so so much better than it ever did before. The first book is going to be centered around the dragon clan, which will be exciting, because we can organize the disappearance of Seiryu and information about how the Saint Beasts operate and who they are all nice and neatly into one story, rather than sprinkling it throughout like we planned with the fanfic version. Also, being able to cut some characters from our MASSIVE cast and add in some that never would have worked with any OP characters really gives us a lot of freedom!

Where are you guys going to post your guys revamped story of immortality is what we leave behind? Are you guys going to go from chapter to chapter or publish it when it is complete?

We’re not entirely sure yet! So far most of what we’ve done is pre-production work, re-designing the world and re-imagining the characters, as well as slimming down the start of the story. We’ll have more answers for you once we’ve gotten further into the writing process, and every update on that will be posted to this blog.

Crap, that's my que to drop things into the shared folder! We have lots of little side stories or ideas that won't ever be in the main story, so you guys might get to see all that.

tbh, although i’m sad that iiwwlb is gonna be semi-abandoned (i know you said that it wasn’t but if it’s original content then that story is kinda being abandoned) i’m glad that it exists! i’m no longer into op but i really wanted to finish that fic but if it’s getting a new life then i wish you well!

You’re so sweet, thank you! I’m really happy people have enjoyed immortality’s world so much. We have so much to write and so much to do, and I can’t wait to be able to share character biographies with everybody, and all of the final artwork and designs once we get there. We’ve been quiet while working so far, but I think we’re nearing the point that we can start being more open and sharing about everything that we have. We’ll do our best!
