Having to choose between lae'zel and shadowheart means growing out the ol' baked bean stained misery beard once more

Ran out of Barovmart Brand Baked Beans.
So Justin cleared out the Underdark in two long rests.
He gave his favourite of the camp pets a new book too.

It is time to crate train the vampire spawn.

Yes he cares for the weak, Nere. Why else would Astarion be kitted out in the finest of armour?

He gave Shadowheart a statue of Shar too, because he loves having images of his own god around the place. As a fellow insane cultist of a twin god that's the ontological opposite of their sibling, he believes she would also like images of her god up around the place. It's what makes a camp truly homely. (That and the crying spots).

Shadowheart appears to have a healthy appreciation for her God, thinks Justin, a man who desperately wants to have sex with Bahamut.

But Lae'zel keeps gazing at him with sad puppy eyes whenever he does anything nice for Shadowheart. What's that about? He does not know. He lives in the wilds of Barovia and scares vampires for a living.

The Underdark was light work, so they hit the Githyanki crèche too. Lae'zel admitted she liked them. Sort of.

Shadowheart remembers nothing but smut novels and wine varieties.

She would prefer to be on a mission to the Baldur's Gate branch of Build-A-ButchBear, but I guess they'll make do with saving themselves from the brain worms.

Sometimes I like to imagine Rhea and Justin as party members in bg3 together because the vibes would remind me of Laios and Kabru dungeon meshi
At least once the rest of the party have to tie Rhea up and lock her in a cage overnight to stop her from murdering Justin in his sleep for his crimes against elfmanity (which include existing, breathing, aggroing every single group of enemies they pass with his inability to lie and extreme sense of justice, insistence that she should replace her posters of Volo with posters of Bahamut, and his habit of lying face down on the ground and eating dirt when disagreed with) but playing along is so second nature to her that Justin...does not notice. That's his fellow paladin bestie. ✨ She keeps looking at him, then looking at rocks, but that's just because she's thinking about which rocks he'd like to eat best ✨✨
(Shadowheart attempts to romance both of them, and is horrified when Justin sits down at the campfire one day and announces that despite trying to save himself for Bahamut, he has lost his virginity to Lae'zel because she looks like a dragon.)
#justin time#rhea dancer#not coincidentally they are both also the only characters who've ever ended up in pvp

Yesterday, Justin attempted to speak with the leaders of the Goblin camp. Unfortunately his brand of diplomacy involves him firmly telling the goblins that he hates what they're about, and aggravating the entire camp at once.
But, the team persevered. And there was a party. One in which his new party all seemed to want to get him alone. He'd rather be singing the praises of dragon daddy than going on dates.

Lae'zel disagreed.

Later, they came across an Owlbear cub.
(why was this familiar?)

(is that why he can't find his mother, except in his dreams?)
Gale let him in, after that. A story of love and ambition and a corruption in his soul.
The last time Justin allowed himself to feel pride, he killed a party member and his best friend's parents. Gale is an alien quantity to him. But he will keep this wizard safe. Wizards are so small and delicate. Do not worry Gale. You will live through this.
And just as he learned more about Gale, he learned more about Astarion.

He should not keep this man like a pet, the way Cazador did. He is aware. But Justin, the professional vampire boogeyman of Barovia, feels...attached to this spawn. So Justin feeds him. He takes care of him. He feels confident, in the way a person might feel confident in their dog, that Astarion will only bite if asked.
(but why did Astarion ask to sleep with him too?)
Even as he adopts Astarion, Justin himself has become the emotional support animal of other party members. Shadowheart, for example, is prickly but her actions do not align with a Sharran, he thinks. He has never met one, but assumes a Sharran would behave similarly to a worshipper of his hated Tiamat. And not stand so close to him that they constantly start combat in the same square.
(Selûne is the twin and hated enemy of Shar. Bahamut is the twin and hated enemy of Tiamat. Once, early after he had lost his oath, Justin had heard a voice calling to him in the darkness, pretending to be Bahamut, trying to become the new source of his power. Justin has a better idea than most of why Shadowheart, who loves small animals and was anxious about doing penance for protecting the Tieflings even though her first response was to save them, might follow Shar.)
At some point between the party and the Underdark, he let Astarion and Shadowheart cut his hair, change his clothes, and clean up his beard for the first time in ten years. It hasn't made much difference. But they washed some of the old Barovmart Brand Baked Beans stains out of his shirt and fixed his moustache.

(he didn't see his parents in the mirror.)
More questions for Gale. Like, is this why you cook for us?

And then, one night, a surprise. An attempted murder in camp. How Barovian.

Justin is not used to being the peace making party member. He is the party member that sniffs new companions, breaks plates when asked to take meals with the morally grey, and has to leave buildings to stop himself from smiting the evil, when his party would rather talk to them. One of the reasons he fell out with his party was their decision to go to Strahd's castle for dinner, instead of a fight.
But he didn't want to lose either Lae'zel or Shadowheart. Lae'zel's eyes and cold green skin make him think of dragons. Shadowheart's elf eyes reflecting in the dark make him think of dragons also. Shadowheart also enjoys the hobby he is most passionate about (drinking alone). Lae'zel recently convinced him to lose his virginity to her by sniffing him repeatedly.
For the first time in history, he managed to say the right thing.

And the honour mode journey continues, with an Owlbear cub and two weirdo cultists who no longer want to murder each other.

Running Honour Mode with Justin Time, my Curse of Strahd paladin.

Justin Time was originally born Elliott Fairmund, the son of a merchant family. When he was three years old, his family was part of a caravan travelling up and down the Sword Coast, when it was attacked by goblins. Elliott was captured and would have been eaten if he had not been saved by a Dragonborn monk of Bahamut.
From then on, he was raised in a monastery dedicated to Bahamut, never seeing another human. He was named "Justin" after the idea of Justice itself. When he was eighteen, he set out to spread the word of the god of dragons and instead found himself uncovering his own past; his family were from Barovia. They suffered beneath the iron fist of the vampire Strahd, an ancient enemy to his bloodline.
Challenging Strahd did not go well. Justin fell out with his party (because he doesn't know how to be human, because he cries constantly, because he has a strong sense of justice, because he hates being made fun of) and broke his oath.
He hasn't found his parents. He doesn't know his mother's face. But he thinks he sees her, sometimes.

(Perhaps he just wishes she'd saved him.)
Before being pulled onto the mindflayer ship, Justin had spent the last ten years roaming the countryside, in and out of Barovia, eating cold Barovmart Brand baked beans out of a can and killing every evil vampire he could.

(Even someone trained to detect falsehoods might be taken in. If they've longed for connection.)

(Did she promise that last time?)
There's vampires here too. But they're not a threat. Not this one. They're something to protect, and nurture.

And clerics of an evil god, a mirror to your own god's twin. But this one isn't a threat either.

And other young men, who lost their families. But good, and noble. A rare thing.

It's enough for a paladin to think, was I really so strange? So cruel? So awful? Was I really so hopeless? Or was it just my environment? Can I be a hero once more?
(is that really his mother, guiding him? Should he do as she suggests, despite his horror at the tadpoles?)
#justin time#bg3 tav#laezel also hit on him but its a no due to the red dragons 😔#so did gale#and karlach#unfortunately for all six party members Justin is saving his virginity for bahamut

I was going through old discord messages and found this from a 2021 discussion when I was apparently planning to respec Rhea to cleric (I kept the paladin pathway due to needing protection style fighting/the fact that she'd prefer the freedom of not being beholden to the gods).
She was always going to fall madly in love with Shadowheart hahaha.
