theres something special in andrews instrument being drums. i know it could just be another way of having the movie capture the public by focusing on it in such way that it induces adrenaline, but... i dont know, drums are loud. violent, even. maybe that part is connected to andrews feelings about his father(s) in the same way a large part of the movie is.

oh yeah the violence is absolutely the reason (aside from damien chazelle having also been into jazz drumming). few other instruments take such a visible, full-body toll on you. all the blisters and abrasions and cuts and blood and whatnot make for great cinematic language (since you can easily show the mental degradation as it intertwines with the physical degradation)

someone along the way surely must have realized that was an insane thing to write and that no one in this world just has their pills out on display on the bus and then cut it from the final working script lmao

insanely funny how every post–whiplash fletchdrew fanfic ive read somehow manages to portray them both in a somewhat domestic life as an old married couple that kind of hate each other but are too tangled into their thing to get out and yet in every single one of them andrew is SO fucking in love with fletcher its actually disgusting to read. this guy would beat you up for free babe pls stand up.

personally i'm a lot more invested/interested in the fletcher side of the domestic equation. like andrew is very much dependent on him and entangled with him and obsessed with him but romantic LOVE... well idk how to talk about this without spoiling anything for my own fic but i have LOTS of thoughts on the topic

yeah in the script there are a few scenes that are him buying/doing drugs. according to the script (which i should note is not necessarily the canon authority because several things were changed from that to the film itself) he's publicly necking uppers like candy immediately before dunellen

favorite andrew neiman moment? ill start by mentioning the whole car sequence (from the starting point in the bus to the climax where he tries to fuck up fletcher right there on live) because it truly is. something. i mean even fletcher had that ‘??????’ face the whole time lmao.

that bit is soooooo good, in the script it's originally because he's on drugs that he acts that way but i like to imagine he just has that insanity in him naturally. don't worry andrew, there will be time for drugs later in your life most assuredly <3

personally i love the family dinner scene because he's such a quick-witted mouthy bitch and there aren't many other points in the movie where we get to see that side of him. "four words you will never hear from the NFL" makes me laugh out loud every single time
