The best diversion the '03 show made from the comics was making Splinter a genuinely loving father.

I'm so serious I hate Mirage Splinter who only took in the turtles and trained them to exact revenge on the Shredder.

'03 Splinter took in these babies because he wanted to and trained them solely to be able to defend themselves because he knew they'd face violence from others simply because of their appearance.
