just finished rereading the first nevermoor book and was struck by how, with the trials, it seems like anything that doesn't violate the precise letter of the rules as given is allowed, including stuff that is basically cheating by anyone's standards. like cadence literally showing a tape of herself getting some poor kid chucked out of the trials by mesmerizing an official into thinking they were cheating when they weren't - technically the rules never said she couldn't get someone else kicked out based on a lie, so it's allowed. same with baz telling noelle where a golden target is before the chase trial. so far as we know, there's nothing saying patrons can't do that. and all that fits with wunsoc's whole deal as we learn more about it in books 2 and 3 - wunsoc the institution does not give a shit about fairness or honesty, as long as the job gets done.
which makes me wonder - did jupiter not pull anything shady to help morrigan through the trials because he's too honorable, or, since he'd never had a candidate before, did he not realize that cheating is basically allowed? when he went through his trials, his witness powers likely gave him an edge, depending on what the trials were. it's possible his patron never gave him an unfair advantage because they didn't need to. (of course, it's also possible that, due to him having smuggled morrigan in illegally, he may not have wanted to take his chances - like maybe there are certain rules that are literally never enforced, but always technically could be, and he didn't want to give baz any ammo against him and morrigan that could risk getting her disqualified.)

Thinking about how insane the Wundrous society is, especially for the mundane.
Imagine you're really good at a basic skill like cooking. A relative mentions to you you're so good at cooking that they're going to sign you up for this elite society that is considered an incredible honor to join! Even getting to participate in the trials to potentially join is seen as an honor.
So you go through grueling, frankly traumatizing trials that most likely have very little to do with your knack. And by the end of it when you get into classes, you're blackmailed, forced to work together with your fellow 12 year olds even as something terrible is being held over your head.
You get through that and you might think for a bit that the hard part's over- you've gotten through the secret trial! Maybe you're really starting to like your unit at this point.
And then you're informed the society you joined exists to fight back and distract people from the fact that various monsters exist in the city, created by a mass murder 100 years ago, and this is all necessary to avoid causing mass panic. You signed up to cook! You did not sign up for this!! But you certainty can't leave because it's such a prestige to be in the society and you've already been through a year of classes!!

still thinking about how knowing that WunSoc’s true purpose is the containment of monsters and distraction from those activities so that people don’t panic casts a totally different light on the Trials. The Book Trial is how well can you spin propaganda on a dime. The Fright Trial is how well can you withstand psychological horror. The Loyalty Trial is can you be blackmailed into silence via threats against your fellow eleven year olds. I’m going to be sick

seeing ppl on twitter’s takes about snowgrave kriselle makes me want to kill myself oh my godddd “its toxic” “regular kriselle better bc its healthier” DO YOU THINK I WANT TO SEE THEM MUSHY KISS AND BE LOVEY DOVEY AND HUG EACH OTHER??? NO!!! the APPEAL is that adding romantic connotations to their snowgrave relationship (which mind you very much already exists in canon) allow their relationship to become so much more interesting. do i think they’ll become truly endgame canon? do i think they’re in love with each other??? ABSOLUTELY NOT!!! AND I DONT WANT THEM TO!!! the POINT is that it’s supposed to be dark and interesting and exploratory of their characters in relation to the deconstruction of autonomy in video games through gender roles and principles of knighthood and the idea of the “damsel in distress”. not to mention that “shipping” regular kriselle and snowgrave kriselle isnt mutually exclusive either. in fact i think understanding both allows you to analyse their relationship much more fully and deeply than without considering the other side. and besides, isnt the fucking point of shipping to explore character relationships??? why would you want to Ignore nuance and depth rather than focus on it???? are you unable to handle anything deeper or darker than like fucking cocomelon??? if you hate character analysis and dark themes in relationships you can head on back there or smth idfk oh my lord i cant fucking TAKE IT ANYMORE

I want an adaptation of Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein where you never see the creature’s face. It’s just out of frame or you see him from behind and all you have are people’s reactions to seeing him.
It’s just so hard to visually capture the idea of him because I don’t think it’s just that he has a messed up mug or looks like a corpse that scares people, I think they see him and their instincts go “that thing was not made by god, that thing should not exist. You don’t belong here”
I really like the idea that the creature’s effect on people is more psychological than anything else but makeup doesn’t really cover that, leaving it up to the imagination however….

Frankenstein AU where the Creature, upon returning to seek terrible vengeance on Victor after realizing the tragic existence he's been forced into, takes a few days extra to actually, you know, observe Victor and see what he's like, to learn how best to enact his revenge. And he comes to the conclusion that, "Actually, I don't need to do anything, this idiot's going to ruin his own life without any outside interference, and I kinda wanna see how he does it."
Victor then proceeds to continue with his previously demonstrated levels of making good life choices, while now also constantly looking over his shoulder for his Creation and having the vapors at every little thing because oh noes, it's The Monster come back to Get Him-!!!
The Creature: (watching all this unfold through binoculars like it's a soap opera while sneaking in to help himself to Victor's larder and library when he feels like it, and also occasionally hiding small but vital objects, like Victor's keys or shaving blade, in weird spots in the house) Wow, it really does take an incredibly smart man to be quite this stupid, doesn't it?

I've seen some people claim that the Genocide route in Undertale Yellow has a plus that Clover survives, with some even using that to justify it happening in-universe, and this has always felt very strange to me, and I think I know why.
Clover doesn't really survive the route. Yes, they walk out alive, but how much can you really say it's Clover by the end? There's an absolute world of difference between even Neutral Clover and Geno Clover.
Neutral Clover, even if they'd killed most everyone in their path up to this point, can never bring themself to say no to Martlet's offer. At lower LV, they happily accept. Because at their core, Clover isn't some instrument of justice.
They're a child who wants a safe home. They want to be taken care of by their friends. They were running away from a bad life on the surface.
Geno Clover is so different because there's not even an option to accept at this point. The idea likely doesn't cross their mind at all.
Even when Geno Clover 'wins' and leaves the underground, it's not much of a victory. I don't think Clover is capable of being happy about what they did. They're not much of a person anymore. They're a husk.
And for the record, I don't think their violent and borderline sadistic tendencies would end at monsterkind. I'm not saying they'd go on a killing spree, but I just have a hard time believing they'd really be one to talk things out if someone disagreed with their methods.
