I actually think your original point might be at least somewhat accurate? I'm not sure about the general use of the honorific in Japanese, but the spiritualist definition is the one specifically highlighted in the official translation. the cultural notes in volume 5 of the English manga translation include this:

The monk Houshou Takigawa calls Kazuya Shibuya by the nickname "Naru-bou." As explained in the beginning of the book, almost everyone calls Shibuya "Naru" (short for "narcissist"), but Takigawa adds the suffix -bou (monk or priest), similar to how other people call Takigawa "Bou-san" ("Monk-san").

so while the other aspect of the honorific may have given it a more playful tone (which is definitely fitting with Takigawa's personality), I think the respectful/spiritualist aspect is his primary motivation for using it post-Doll House. or else one of the official translators went really off the rails.

I also think, given Naru's canonical lack of familiarity with idioms and the aspects of Japanese culture that don't relate to ghost-hunting, it's probably more likely that he knows the "spiritual master" connotations of the honorific that the "casual way to address a young guy" connotations.

remember when everyone started calling Naru "Naru-bou" (-bou is a very respectful yet niche honorific used for someone with a great deal of - assumed - spiritual esteem and power) and his reaction was "...finally." Like he didn't even realize his employees had a misconception about his abilities until Mai said something even though they'd basically started calling him "[Spiritual] Master Naru." If he'd gone into work one day and they all stood up and bowed to him I swear this kid would have been like, "...It's about time." And sauntered into his office without thinking twice about it.

Edit: So "-bou" is actually used to address/talk about younger boys/guys. It's sort of like "sonny" or "lad" I guess. I DO think Takigawa was using it that way, but also as something of a playful acknowledgment of Naru's (ostensible) skills as an onmyouji since "bou" as in "sonny, boy" and as in "monk" are the same kanji and he started using it after the Dollhouse case where Naru used the hitogata. I also think this because Ono loves double-layered jokes like this (another, non-linguistic example is lin having a cold but also sneezing whenever the others talk about them during the "haunting in the park" episode).

That said, i don't think Naru would have picked up on the fact that Bou-san was acknowledging him as a spiritualist master because that's not actually what the honorific means; so my original point was wrong.

...but I do think Naru would say "finally" and saunter into his office if his employees bowed lmfao.

I was chatting with some friends in the MDZS/Untamed fandom and got to Explaining all of my (very correct) opinions about my favorite QT characters and... how have I just now realized how many great similarities there are between NieYao and Relius/Teleus?

bastard whose struggle for recognition leads him to spy and otherwise do the Unsavory work of running a kingdom

+ signature item of clothing that symbolizes his respected position (hat/cape)

+ plot-significant injuries, including specifically hand/arm trauma

is it possible I... have a type? no definitely not. the fact that my other favorite ship is also a tall, stubborn, too-honest soldier and a prickly but extremely clever and efficient young man with a chip on his shoulder due to a disadvantaged background who is frustrated by the soldier's naive view of power imbalances in society is just a COMPLETE COINCIDENCE.

I am very charmed at the character detail in TaT that Immakuk believes a cover story is essential to his sneaky appearance, but also he is a bad liar who is not good at cover stories, whereas Ennikar is very comfortable about lying but barely thinks it’s necessary and doesn’t put much effort into it. It’s a fun thing to play with in fics.

I’m looking up some references in TaT for a Fandom Trumps Hate fic I’m working on and I think the Comet role reversal fic is like… my number one all time “why can’t this WIP just write itself in the background” fic. Because it would be super long and cover a lot of time but also there has never been a point in time where it was my main priority, and that really is a shame.

I voted for modern Ensur, and then for a moment I thought “oh wait, he does know Archaic canonically because he knows annux”—but then I thought it over and actually I think Thick as Thieves proves that he does not know Archaic as Archaic. He uses annux in the modern colloquial sense, thinking it means “great king,” similar to how the soldiers in KoA use “basileus” as a compliment. The modern Attolian definition of annux or basileus is a statement on the quality of the ruler.

But! Teleus corrects the guards by referring back to the archaic definition, in which annux or basileus is a statement on the role of the ruler, either a king over the common people or a king over other kings. Kamet is ignorant of this fine distinction—he doesn’t understand why the well-bred, well-educated Archaic speakers of the court react so dramatically to his use of the term.

Personally, I just don’t think that’s the kind of etymological mistake that noted linguist snob Kamet would make. Rather, I think it’s the mistake of someone who has only studied modern Attolian and therefore only knows Archaic in the ways it has been filtered into the modern dialect.

In Thick as Thieves, Kamet and Costis have this exchange:

"I am a little vain," I admitted. "I had no idea," said the Attolian with an impressively straight face. "I am used to being respected." "And no one was awed that you speak four languages?" "Five," I corrected him automatically, and he laughed outright.

Kamet also notes in chapter one that he reads and writes "most of the significant languages of the empire," but without specifying what languages those are.

A buddy recommended that I read The Thief and to NOT LOOK UP ANYTHING ABOUT IT beforehand, and...now I'm almost done with book 4!!!

Book 3 has been my fav so far, and I wanted to doodle a bunch of lil Gens in various parts of the book! Can't wait to see what more nonsense this goober gets himself and everyone else into in the next few novels!
