Hit the whump jackpot with Mission Impossible, like my fave character is Benji and he gets tons of great whump scenes
#Arguably he gets more whump than Ethan Hunt bc Benji is allowed to show his pain and distress when Ethan has to hide everything away to lead#whump#mission impossible

"Write for yourself"
Brother, I literally have more than 2 million words sitting in my drafts folder instead of posted on AO3.
I write for myself. I post for community interaction.

I love when fanfic authors are freakishly unhinged. "Yes, hello, I am here to write a heart wrenching story about relationships and mortality. My medium is Ducktales (2017)"
#I have a long DuckTales fic in the works about family and the failures of keeping that relationship together#Also using it to explore the effect of war#I feel called out with this post lol

Whumpees who are complicated. Who have made mistakes. Who have hurt people. Whumpees who don't care about the damage done along the way as long as their mission gets completed. Whumpees who like causing pain a little too much.
Whumpees who deserve some kind of comeuppance, but the whumper takes it too far.
Whumpees that the caretaker has every right to hate, to distrust, to treat as an enemy.
Whumpees who fight and curse and scream at whumper, even though deep down they know they had this coming.
And they know they don't deserve to be saved from it.

now say it with me: authors/artists dont owe you moral purity. an author/artist job is not to hold you by the hand & tell you exactly what is Good™ & what is Bad™. you should be able to think for yourself

Epistolary whump story. Whump story told in the form of letters sent to Whumpee’s loved one/caretaker, Whumpee’s diary entries, whatever, slowly getting more and more frantic and fearful as time passes. Maybe they describe in detail what’s happening to them, maybe they try to convince their loved one and themselves that everything’s okay and they’ll make it out. Maybe it’s a brainwashing thing and it all happens in reverse- they start out panicked and frightened and slowly start talking about how happy they are and how they don’t want to leave. Maybe one of the letters is bloodstained. Maybe the writing gets shakier and shakier as time goes on.
Maybe every last one of the letters is posted by Whumper, drawn out long after Whumpee’s death to torment their caretaker/loved one too.

honestly i never really understand the impulse to make doppelgangers/doubles/mirrors of people different to their counterparts, even subtly, at least in terms of appearance (personality is another beast entirely). for me, the horror of the doppelganger isn't that it's a monstrous, twisted thing with malevolent intent wearing a creepy imitation of you or your loved ones' faces, but that it makes you question what could possibly be deficient in you that makes you something less than "good enough" and coming up empty - because whatever it is, it's beyond your capacity to even conceive of. you are the architect of your own annihilation. your greatest obstacle has always been yourself. this other version of you, or someone whose existence affirms yours, is fundamentally no different - they're just not you, and therein lies the answer. your jealousy and self-loathing will ruin you without the imposter having to ever do a thing.

Hi! Big fan over here!
My least favorite whump tropes are probably whiny whumpees. Maybe if being bratty is an established part of their character, but otherwise no. (I mostly read sickfic, so I’m talking about a whumpee that acts like a big baby over a little cold, not one in serious pain or anything)
ooh yes, this is definitely a divisive trope. personally I can like it in certain circumstances, but when it's like you described where the main whumpee is whining about something minor that stays minor is annoying to me.
here are some circumstances under which I do like this trope:
whumpee is whining at first about very little (though it has to be done carefully so it isn't OOC), but when their illness gets worse, they become quiet and reserved. caretaker(s) are worried by the sudden change in demeanor only to find their condition has worsened.
whumpee is whining about what appears to be something minor to the other characters only to find that something was really wrong all along (whining about being cold when really they have bad fever chills, about being sore when really they've got flu aches, headaches when it's really a migraine, etc.)
the whiny whumpee is not the main focus, but caretaker, who is also ill. they either take care of whiny whumpee or allow others to prioritize them, ignoring their own condition until it's serious.
hopefully you like one of these! :)

"came back wrong" what about Came Back Afraid. You used to be brave. Too brave maybe, defying the odds at every turn, a fighter, cocky, playing with fire, first to throw yourself at the enemy. Until one day it all caught up to you. You came back, somehow, but now you know all too intimately how it feels to lose, to die, to be destroyed. Now you flinch and freeze and cower at the slightest provocation. Who even are you now if you can't be brave? The grave may have let you go, but the mortal fear still grips you tighter than ever.

hidden injury is great, but a subversion that gives me so many whumperflies is when Whumpee is injured, it's a bad injury, and the team knows this. but they can't stop. they've got a mission to complete, they have to keep moving, they can't be spotted, et cetera. the brawn supports whumpee's weight, the medic is tracking their vitals with quick glances and questions, the leader is forging onward to get to safety as soon as possible. all while Whumpee doesn't hide the pain, but takes it with grim determination. they have to keep going. they have to. they will.

There's a sudden huge wave of kudos on an old fic of mine and I have no clue why. Did someone rec it? Did someone make art about it and didn't share? Why are so many people reading and kudoing a fic that hasn't gotten any attention in months? I just want to know what people are thinking about it, if they're talking about it without me, I wanna know what they're saying 😭
#If anyone knows about fanart or someone recommending a crack fic of Jason Vorhees from Friday the 13th killing Voldemort#Or being the Hogwarts champion for the Triwizard tournament please tell me#It feels like only my crack fics get attention

Kudos to fanfiction writers for writing about all the trauma and emotional and mental turmoil that the original content creators dont acknowledge when putting characters through hell
