as much as the concept of Jesus being a fairly normal lad has its charms, im personally very intrigued by the idea of him being just⊠extremely weird. not even in a mystical sense, justâŠâŠ.staggeringly BIZZARRE.Â
you go to the well to get some water, and hereâs Miriamâs boy, staring at the sky, completely still. his expression is unreadable. you hazard a hello and ask how heâs doing, and he slowly, unblinkingly, lowers his gaze on you (heâs 8 and is missing his frontal teeth, not that this is making you any less uncomfortable) and says âI cannot speak of the state of my being, Nathan son of Saul, my brother, but rejoice for the water you shall take today will be as pure as the soul of the children of Heavenâ
âŠyou start sweating

Hereâs the thing about the air nomads.
I introduced a friend to ATLA a few nights ago, and they had only known two things about the entire show: the cabbage meme, and that Aang apparently wants to ride every large and dangerous animal he can possibly find. We got through the first five or so episodes, and my friend noted that Aang is exactly what a 12-year-old would be like if given godlike powers, and that this is literally just what he could do with airbending. He canât even wield any of the other elements, and heâs one of the most powerful people on the planet, because heâs an airbender.
And that got me thinking.
This snippet from Bitter Work is one of the few pieces of concrete information we get about the airbenders, at least in ATLA. Iroh is explaining to Zuko how all four of the elements connect to the world and to each other.
Fire is the element of power, of desire and will, of ambition and the ability to see it through. Power is crucial to the world; without it, thereâs no drive, no momentum, no push. But fire can easily grow out of control and become dangerous; it can become unpredictable, unless it is nurtured and watched and structured.
Earth is the element of substance, persistence, and enduring. Earth is strong, consistent, and blunt. It can construct things with a sense of permanence; a house, a town, a walled city. But earth is also stubborn; itâs liable to get stuck, dig in, and stay put even when itâs best to move on.
Water is the element of change, of adaptation, of movement. Water is incredibly powerful both as a liquid and a solid; it will flow and redirect. But it also will change, even when you donât want it to; ice will melt, liquid will evaporate. A life dedicated to change necessarily involves constant movement, never putting down roots, never letting yourself become too comfortable.
We see only a few flashbacks to Aangâs life in the temples, and we get a sense of who he was and what kind of upbringing he had.
This is a preteen with the power to fucking fly. Heâs got no fear of falling, and a much reduced fear of death. Thereâs a reason why the sages avoid telling the new avatar their status until they turn sixteen; could you imagine a firebender, at twelve years old, learning that they were going to be the most powerful person in the whole world? Depending on that child, that could go so badly.
But the thing about Aang, and the thing about the Air Nomads, is that they were part of the world too. They contributed to the balance, and then they were all but wiped out by Sozin. What was lost, there? Was it freedom? Yes, but I think thereâs something else too, and itâs just yet another piece of the utter brilliance of the worldbuilding of ATLA.
To recap: we have power to push us forward; we have stability to keep us strong; we have change to keep us moving.
And then we have this guy.
The air nomads brought fun to the world. They brought a very literal sense of lightheartedness.
Sozin saw this as a weakness. I think a lot of the world did, in ATLA. Why do the Air Nomads bother, right? Theyâre just up there in their temples, playing games, baking pies in order to throw them as a gag. As Iroh said above, they had pretty great senses of humour, and they didnât take themselves too seriously.
But thatâs a huge part of having a world of balance and peace.
Itâs not just about power, or might, or the ability to adapt. You can have all of those, but you also need fun. You need the ability to be vulnerable, to have no ambitions beyond just having a good day. You need to be able to embrace silliness, to nurture play, to have that space where a very specific kind of emotional growth can occur. Fun makes a hard life a little easier. Fun makes your own mortality a little less frightening to grasp. Fun is the spaces in between, that canât be measured by money or military might. Fun is what nurtures imagination, allows you to see a situation in a whole new light, to find new solutions to problems previously considered impossible.
Fun is what makes a stranger into a friend, rather than an enemy.
Fun helps you see past your differences.
Fun is what fuels curiosity and openmindedness.
Fun is the first thing to die in a war.

In The Road to El Dorado there is only really one inexplicable thing within the plot. Miguel and Tulio plausibly bluff their way through or slip out of most situations. However, Iâd never figured out why the volcano actually stops erupting when Tulio commands it.Â
The conclusion I finally came up with is that the actual gods were watching their big entrance go down, and thought âoh, thisâll be hilariousâ

âIs it possible to turn things around by 2050? The answer is absolutely yes,â says Kai Chan, a professor at the Institute for Resources, Environment and Sustainability at the University of British Columbia.
Many scientists have been telling us how the world will look like, if we donât act now. However, others, like Chan, are tracking what success might look like.
They are not simply day-dreamers either. They arenât being too optimistic. They are putting together road maps for how to safely get to the planet envisioned in the 2015 Paris Agreement, where temperatures hold at 1.5 degrees Celsius higher than before we started burning fossil fuels, this article from July states.
âThree decades is enough to do a lot of important things. In the next few yearsâif we get started on themâthey will pay dividends in the coming decades,â says Chan, the lead author of the chapter on achieving a sustainable future in a recent UN report that predicted the possible extinction of a million species.
Making these changes wonât mean years of being poor, cold and hungry before things get comfortable again, the scientists insist. They say that if we start acting seriously NOW, we stand a decent chance of transforming society without huge disruption.Â
No doubt, it will take a massive switch in societyâs energy use. But without us noticing, thatâs already happening. Not fast enough, maybe, but it is. Solar panels and offshore wind power plummet in price. Iceland and Paraguay have stripped the carbon from their grids, according to a new energy outlook report from Bloomberg. Europe is on track to be 90 per cent carbon-free by 2040. And Ottawa says that Canada is already at 81 per cent, thanks to hydro, nuclear, wind and solar.Â
Decarbonizing the whole economy is within grasp. We can do this.
âIf we have five years of really sustained efforts, making sure we reorient our businesses and our governments toward sustainability, then from that point on, this transition will seem quite seamless. Because it will just be this gradual reshaping of options,â Chan says, adding: âAll these things seem very natural when the system is changing around you.â

TW: murder, death threats, homophobia, transphobia.
the russian LGBT community is in deep shit right now.
a russian LGBT rights activist elena grigoryeva was recently found dead with 8 stab wounds near her home.

the police didnât do anything about it, despite how many people called out for help.
thereâs also a russian anti LGBT group called âpilaâ (âchainsawâ). a couple of months prior they published a hit list of LGBT activists from russia. elena was on the list. and so are other people who are related to the community in some ways.

they stated that they prepared some âcruel giftsâ to the people on the list. the beauty blogger andrew petrov (whose name is also on it) recently made a post for his followers that shed more light on the situation.
another activist, andrew shituhin is a victim of this organization. the addresses of his family, along with other personal information got published on the website. earlier he got kicked out of his university. he immigrated to netherlands, although recently he came to a town near moskow to live for a bit. his friend, zhenia svetski, is aimed at by this organization. in a threatening email âpilaâ stated that he will be killed before august if andrew doesnât help him to immigrate to netherlands.
all iâm asking for is to spread this post so that more people from other countries are aware of the situation.
also, iâm encouraging russian folks to add more information to this post in case if i missed anything. thank you.
update: holy shit, this post really blew up. thank you all so much for spreading it.
https://lgbtnet.org/en/help-us-so-we-can-help-others you can donate to the russian LGBT network here. theyâre currently working on protecting people from âpilaâ so every dollar and pound is appreciated. âĄ

The Radioactive Man Who Returned To Fukushima To Feed The Animals That Everyone Else Left Behind
Naoto Matsumura is the only human brave enough to live in Fukushimaâs 12.5-mile exclusion zone

He fled at first but returned to take care of the animals that were left behind

He returned for his own animals at first, but realized that so many more needed his help, too

Matsumura, who is 55 years old, knows that the radiation is harmful, but he ârefuses to worry about itâ

âThey also told me that I wouldnât get sick for 30 or 40 years. Iâll most likely be dead by then anyway, so I couldnât care lessâ

Matsumura discovered that thousands of cows had died locked in barns

He also freed many animals that had been left chained up by their owners

Many of them now rely on him for food

The government has forbidden him from staying, but that doesnât stop him either

He started in 2011 and is still going strong 4 years later

He relies solely on donations from supporters to work with and feed the animals

His supporters are calling him the âguardian of Fukushimaâs animalsâ

The man clearly has a sense of humor as well
