One of the Hardest Things

I don’t really like keeping things in, so I’ll write this one out before I head on a flight back to Dublin.

One of the hardest things I face in my life has been done over and over again the past few years. Whenever I come to Minnesota I get the utmost pleasure of seeing my granny. No matter what state she’s in. And this year, was no different if anything amazing and yet so so heartbreaking.

The first day I had no idea what to expect. I hadn’t seen her in about a year and I didn’t see her a lot when I visited last time.

However, My Nain was sitting there and at first I couldn’t find her. When I did, I was a little shocked and almost afraid. That day was hard. I felt myself coming to tears because I was heartbroken knowing there was little I could do.

The second day we got there at the same time, for lunch. I was still scared. Scared she didn’t know who I was or didn’t acknowledge me. That day I helped feed her for the first time. I had always been afraid because she’s so dainty. She’s the tiniest thing I’ve ever seen! But she ate, and when she opened her eyes she looked at me and I looked back and I just kept saying in my head: I love you. I almost cried again. But these weren’t tears of sadness. They were tears of joy. Tears knowing my granny was there with me.

We went almost every day to see her. The days we did we’d tell her stories of us, bring up some old memories and talk about what we’re up to day to day. When she’d smile waves of emotion hit me. We laughed, I almost cried (again) and I rarely stopped smiling.

I spent the past few weeks being there for her, because there isn’t much I can do while in Dublin. Holding her hands. Making sure she knows I’m there. Telling her I love her and having my heart broken with what little I could do.

Today was different. We walked in there and helped her eat and I put my hand over her making sure she knew I was there. I gave her a kiss and that was where this photo was taken. This is the hardest thing I’ve to do every single time I leave. Say goodbye because it could be the last time. I’ve done that for so many years now and I’ll still take it as seriously as I did the first time I had to do it. Hearing from your mother ‘You may not see her again’ is something I’ve played over and over in my head overtime I leave.

I’ve learned a lot in my life I like to think. But I’ve learned a lot from my grandmother and that’s unconditional love. She’s a tough cookie, a hilarious woman and the best grandmother I could ask for. Going back to Dublin is hard. But I never stop thinking about her and I know I’m one hell of a lucky grandchild.
