Summary:

The reprieve from his parents is a welcome one as Tim slips into the crowd at the markets. They insisted on accompanying him to pick out his dragon now that he’d come of age. To make sure he picks a beast worthy of the Drake name, they’d said. Tim has lived under his parents’ thumb long enough to know it’s another effort on their part to keep him under his control. Ever since he mentioned off-hand about becoming one of the Gotham territory guards, they’d insisted on being heavily involved in his dragon riding training and, now, the selection of his actual dragon.

I done got tagged for ✨Feelings Friday✨ by @takemetomyfragiledreams (which I am so here for cuz I never post on the right days either 🙃 time is nothing but a socially construct amirite?) atm I can't do sad feelings or I might legitimately collapse and break apart like a wet paper bag (I got dick kicked by life which, uh, rude) so have some witty(arguable) baby assassin Tim!

Being abducted by an insane underground cult of assassins as a kid wasn’t all bad, Tim reasoned with himself. As jarring as it was to go from an overly curious, sheltered kid with a penchant for being where he shouldn’t to the child progeny of a man with more arrogance and cunning than practical sense, he likes to think he turned out okay. Mostly. Look at any of the other cogs in Ra’s al Ghul’s League of Assassins war machine. They’re by far worse off than him. In comparison, he’s a well adjusted, perfectly normal young adult living his best life. 

If by best life someone meant forced subservience to a madman after being kidnapped, tortured and trained up into an elite assassin. 

After first, knobby kneed and chubby cheeked, Tim’s innate thirst for knowledge kept him blissfully unaware of the true dangers he was facing by willingly walking next to Ra’s al Ghul. Being snatched up one night while traipsing around downtown Gotham, camera in hand and eyes focused on the roof tops rather than his surroundings, was terrifying. Zero out of ten, Tim would not recommend an unforeseen kidnapping. Then he met Ra’s al Ghul, loudly dignified and quietly pompous. He offered Tim unfettered access to centuries worth of ancient texts and, more importantly, the time and attention Tim couldn’t ever recall receiving from his own parents. 

A fortuitous mistake, Ra’s had said of Tim’s arrival in Nanda Parbat. A grievous error on his colleague’s part but, since Tim was already so far from home and arranging his safe passage back would take time, why not keep himself busy with their archives? After all, Tim seemed like such a smart, scholarly child. 

Terrified, uncomfortable and so, so devastatingly curious, Tim agreed without ever realizing he’d snapped the trap shut around his own leg by doing so.

Tim devoured the dusty tombs Ra’s al Ghul let him paw over, decoding the ancient languages thanks to years of trying to impress his archaeologist parents and excitedly gushing about the wealth of new information he’d be able to take home to share in the hopes his parents would stay for more than a weekend before flying off again. Ra’s let Tim soothe himself with the fantasy for two weeks before introducing Tim to his first blade. Riding the high of spontaneity, he didn’t see any issue with taking a few self defense lessons. Especially if it earned him the same kind of praise Ra’s willingly handed out when asking Tim about his studies. 

Before he knew it, Tim had been at Nanda Parbat for a month. Smarter, brighter and stronger than before. Then he made the mistake of asking Ra’s when he would be sent back to his parents. By now, they would know he was missing. Someone would know he was gone. He didn’t want Ra’s to unnecessarily get in trouble when he’d been such a good host so far. 

Ra’s had laughed and leveled Tim with a pitying, condescending shake of the head. “Surely, you realize by now.”

“Realize what?” Tim asked blankly, feeling like he was in free fall as the pieces clicked into place.
