i'm glad they got to do a final song, but honestly they've been functionally disbanded for like two and a half years now. im more mad at fantagio for that long hiatus than i am for their disbandment. the members deserve to be free from their contracts! honestly, if fantagio wasnt gonna do ANYTHING with them since November 2021, they should have disbanded all the back then and let the girls sign with other companies that WILL let them do stuff.

i've been posting more of my thoughts and stuff on twitter. i'll reiterate some here though too. some honorable mentions are stuff like xg shooting star, nj super shy, h1key seoul, jo yuri taxi, triples rising and invincible, oec air force one, etc. shooting star could have been 10th, but i ended up going with spicy. it's close though

this is the first year i put aespa on my list, though they should have been on it in 2020. black mamba was 11th for me that year, but i included kick it by nct on my 2020 list, and every year since then i've done girl-group-only lists. so if i retroactively make 2020 a girl group only list, black mamba would have been on it. but either way, aespa are on this one.

this is also the first year where an artist got three songs on it. in 2020, dreamcatcher and gfriend both got two each (scream and boca, mago and crossroads). in 2021, weeekly got two (holiday party and after school), but in hindsight, i should have put everglow pirate on my list instead of after school. if i had done that, there still would have been an artist with two, because everglow also had first. in 2022, le sserafim got both of their comebacks (fearless and antifragile) and billlie got both of theirs too (gingamingayo and ring ma bell). but no group had ever gotten three before! nj just had that good of a year. it's also notable because ditto and omg were part of the same comeback. i could maybe have included le sserafim unforgiven or nmixx young dumb stupid, but i ended up not doing that, in favor of other songs from other groups.

what else is there to say.... uhhhh... idk. anyway

1. Newjeans - Ditto

surprise, surprise. here we are lol. yes, this song came out in December 2022, but it was late in the month, and technically it was a pre-release track for a song that came out in January (which was OMG), so technically its official release was 2023 haha

but anyway... Ditto is perfect. it's not just the best song of the year, i think it's also my favorite kpop song of the 2020s so far. maybe my favorite kpop song ever, though i feel like i still need more time to make that decision haha.

nothing affects me the way Ditto does. it's like weapons-grade nostalgia. you could use this as a nostalgia weapon if you wanted to kill someone with just pure raw nostalgia. it hits me like a truck, man... all i can think about is how life could have been different...

the music videos are amazing too. people had all these theories that they were about parasocial relationships but i dont think that's true, i think they're about nostalgia. the main character, Heesoo, is shy and copes with that by listening to music, specifically Newjeans. but she starts to grow up. little by little, she starts running away from the members, who represent her childhood. she asks out the boy she has a crush on, she breaks her camera with all her memories, etc, and their presence fades from her life, she grows up. and at the end of Side B, adult Heesoo, now much older, finds her old videotapes and watches them. she's overwhelmed with nostalgia. she sees the tape where the members come in through a door and immediately the same scene plays out in real life, they enter her door physically. that's not real obviously, but its a metaphor for the memories rushing back to her. she's immediately transported to where she was at that time in her life. she realizes that even though she grew up, she never lost that part of her. at the drop of a hat, she's back. and it's nice

would i like the song this much without the music video? yes. but does it still help overall? yes of course. it'd be my SOTY either way, but i think this context and artistic vision for it is what helps it be SOTD, song of the decade.

Ditto isn't just good by kpop standards, like some songs on this list. it's just good by any standards. Ditto is important to me.

2. NMIXX - Love Me Like This

holy shit Nmixx had an incredible year. if i had another month or two, Sonar might have been able to make this list too haha. but anyway, LMLT is incredible. one of the catchiest kpop songs i've ever heard.

but it's the instrumental that really does it for me. the percussion, the noises, the snapping, the chains or keys rattling or jingling, the like bottle caps being clicked or popped, the little whistles and claps, it just makes my stupid brain light up. this song is everything i could have wanted from them. i think it's their best song by such a wide margin that i'm not sure they'll ever be able to beat it, but that's fine because i don't need them to. this song made me a passionate fan

3. TripleS - Girls' Capitalism

if this was a list of the worst song titles, it'd be #1 lol. but title aside, i love every single thing about this song. i'm just so in love with it. the lyrics are so charming, the music video is so charming, the choreo is so charming, everything.

it's just perfect. Generation was one of my favorite songs last year, and possibly a perfect 10/10 song for me, and Girls Cap really feels like a successor to Generation. and possibly also a 10 lol. or at least a strong 9. best music video of the year too

4. Newjeans - ETA

one of the things i had to spend time considering when making this list was whether or not ETA was higher than OMG lol, but yeah i think it is. ETA is so frantic and almost paranoid sounding, which fits with the lyrics about spying on a friend's boyfriend, who is cheating on that friend at a party, and relaying information to your friend on the phone about her boyfriend's activies lmao. what an interesting concept. it kinda reminds me of Billlie's Ring x Ring actually, both in terms of the unconventional lyrics for kpop and in terms of the high-alert instrumental. my only complaint is that it's just too short
