Bellona
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now we head on to my favorite Goddess in Roman Mythology, Goddess of War herself, Bellona!
Bellona
Bellona, originally named “Duellona” (as if she weren’t badass enough) was the famed Goddess of war in Roman Mythology. Her first temple in Rome was constructed on 296 BCE, where her festival was celebrated during the 3rd of June (which is my birthdate btw). She is commonly associated with Enyo, her greek counterpart, and Eris, Goddess of Strife who was responsible for the rise of Rome. She is also known as the consort of Mars. There is not a lot of stories about her other than that her name is most important during declaration of wars against foreigners. She is commonly depicted holding a sword, spear, or shield, and brandishes a torch or a whip as she rides into battle in a four horse chariot.

Tyr
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tyr
(The symbol above is his rune, which literally means Tyr)
-Known as the God of justice and war(aside from Thor and Odin), Tyr proves to be as one of the most important deities in Nordic/Scandinavian Mythology, as the Icelanders proved to be quite interested in war. Tyr was such an important deity back then that his name was on par with Odin’s. But as time went on, Tyr was heavily forgotten since Icelanders became more interested in pillaging, so instead of performing rituals for Tyr, they instead performed rituals for Thor (God of war and strength) and Odin (God of Wisdom, war, and the allfather). Mars, the roman deity of war, is thought to be just a reincarnation of him too.
Tyr doesn’t have a lot of writings about him, (most probably lost or burned during the Catholic era) except for one. In the texts of “The Binding of Fenrir” he has shown literal acts of heroism and justice. Fenrir, son of loki, was born as a young pup, but he grew so fast that the Gods of Old feared his power. So they decided to trick Fenrir. They would present him this chains that was created to bound him, and Fenrir was told to break them as a performance of strength. Each time Fenrir broke free of a chain, they would clap as if Fenrir was a child performing his talents. Finally, the Gods decided to ask the help of the dwarves (the greatest craftsmen) to create a chain that would bound him. Finally they made the chain named “Gleipnir” made from cat’s footsteps, the beard of a woman, the roots of mountains, the breath of a fish, and the spittle of a bird - basically, made from things that doesn’t exist. (I don’t know in what world that this deities lived in but I’m pretty sure Icelandic women had facial hair ._.). When they presented Fenrir the chain, it looked light and feathery, so Fenrir was suspicious and was suspecting trickery. So he refused to wear the chains unless someone would insert their arm inside his lethal jaws while the chain was being wrapped around him. No god would stand up for the challenge since they know that in doing so they would either lose their hand, or break an oath. But finally, Tyr (our daddy) decided to take up the challenge for the sake of the living. Fenrir trusted Tyr since he was nice to him from the very start. When Fenrir found out that he could not break free, he bit Tyr’s arm, which Tyr anticipated. Thus, Tyr is named the following: Grimjaws, the even-handed, the maimed God, the just God, the wounded God, the blind Tyr.
I do not own the picture used above. If someone could tell me who owns them I would highly appreciate it.

Cronus
Tumblr media
My first post, I’d like to start with the infamous King of Titans.
CRONUS/KRONUS
- Known as the Titan of Golden Age and time, Cronus lives up to his name as the King of Titans. He is the youngest Titan born from Primordial deities Gaia and Ouranus (father sky and mother earth). According to Theogony, Cronus becoming the ruler of the cosmos was done due to a series of events. It started when Ouranus has triggered Gaia’s wrath when he hid Gaia’s children in Tartarus (Basically like the hell of Greek myth). Gaia, angered by Ouranus actions, asked his Titan sons to castrate their father. (who was also their brother since Gaia gave birth to Ouranus according to Theogony .-.) Only Cronus was brave enough to accept the challenge. He castrated his father with the help of his brothers holding Ouranus down, and usurped his father Ouranus as the ruler of cosmos, bringing over the Golden Age. But knowing Greek myth, there is really no such thing as a happy ending. He was given a prophecy by Ouranus that he was to be usurped by his son, just as he did to him. To prevent his prophecy, whenever Rhea (Ouranus wife/sister) gave birth, he would devour them whole. This continued on for the last 5 children of Rhea until she had enough and decided to trick Cronus into eating a rock instead (guy is smart enough to rule the universe but not enough to recognize a rock from a child), while she hid Zeus in Crete to grow. Eventually, Zeus freed his siblings by disgorging them from his father’s stomach (they were still alive since they were immortal), whilst starting the Titanomachy. A war that lasted a hundred years until Cronus was finally defeated with the help of Gaia’s children (the Hetatonchires) and with him being sent to Tartarus.
NOTE: NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH CHRONOS/FATHER TIME!!!
