Jonathan Crane
Childhood
Jonathan Crane was born out of wedlock to a reluctant mother, Karen Keeny and a non-existent father, Gerald Crane. Both parents having no interest in the boy, was left to be raised by his religious great-grandmother Keeny in a rickety old mansion in Arlen, Georgia.
Keeny was a strict old woman, making Jonathan labor in the fields, forbidding him to partake in things such as Halloween or leisurely reading.
Punishment for disobeying his great-grandmother was a trip to the chapel. A dark, rundown aviary not far from the mansion, originally built by Jonathan’s family as a place of worship. Now the structure stands to teach Jonathan (and his mother before him) a lesson on facing childhood fears. Forced to dress in his Sunday best, Jonathan would be locked inside and attacked by hungry crows. See great-grandmother Keeny had whipped up a special formula of wild fowl pheromones, home-grown herbs and rat juices to sprinkle on the boys suit to attract the angry scavengers.
Life outside of home wasn’t any better for Jonathan. At school kids picked on him, calling him names like “Handrail” and of course, “Scarecrow.” It wasn’t long before Jonathan discovered a secret library in the mansion where he took solace. After researching chemistry and other sciences, Crane developed an intensified dosage of his great-grandmothers pheromone formula. Jonathan would get his “poetic justice” on her and a bully at school, killing Keeny and nearly blinding the kid. Still things didn’t get better with age for Jonathan Crane.
High School
As Jonathan got older his body got lankier. His long extremities and love of literature did not make him popular in high school. His “Scarecrow” moniker stuck with him along with a new name, “Ichabod” a reference to the character from Sleepy Hollow who he shared resemblance.
Jonathan finally decided to read about the character he was reluctantly nicknamed. He discovered that their similarities did not stop with looks. He became inspired by Ichabod Crane and even took to dancing like the main character. His Violent Dancing, as he called it, would extend into studying martial arts.
His senior year of high school, Jonathan built up enough courage to ask out the recently single Sherry Squires, former girlfriend of number one bully, Bo Griggs. Invited to a Halloween party, Sherry led Crane into a dark basement where Bo jumped out and scared him. He then tossed a pumpkin at Jonathan similarly to what happened to his new found hero, Ichabod.
He vowed to get his revenge. The night of the senior prom, Jonathan planned it just right. Using cherry bombs and a costume, Jonathan Crane finally succumbed to the name that had haunted him since he was a small child, he was now ready to strike terror and fear in his victims as the Scarecrow!
The accident paralyzed Bo and killed Sherry. Crane couldn’t be happier with himself. With two murders (great-grandmother Keeny and Sherry Squires) under his belt before adulthood, Jonathan was ready to take on college.
College
Attending Gotham University, Jonathan wasted no time throwing himself into his studies. Concentrating on psychology and chemistry, he quickly became the favorite of Professor Bramowitz. Crane used this to his advantage creating his now infamous fear toxin and soon disposed of his friend and mentor.
With the professor out of the way, this left an opening for the job. Jonathan would use the job to further his obsession, his lessons focusing primarily on fear.
Becoming a expert on the mind, Crane was even approached by a young Batman for advice on a sociopath who eventually becomes the Joker. His knowledge on psychology got him an internship at a mental institution where he treated and mentored a young Thomas Elliot aka Hush.
Doctor Crane’s teaching methods at the university were unorthodox to say the least. After firing a gun in the class and injuring a student in the process, Crane was let go from the university. Later, as an employee at his future residence, Arkham Asylum, Jonathan performed experiments on his patience to further his ‘research” and perfect his fear toxin.
Now full time criminal, Scarecrow initially sought revenge against all who contributed to his years of suffering, starting with the men responsible for his release from the university.
Appearance
Jonathan Crane has short, slightly disheveled, auburn hair. Jonathan Crane has light skin with noticeable freckles across the face and arms. Jonathan Crane has a somewhat gaunt face and sharp cheekbones. His nose is prominent and slightly crooked from being broken. His eyes are narrow behind rectangular glasses, and his nose is straight and prominent. Jonathan Crane has a slender build, standing upright with a confident, slightly arrogant posture.
Headcanon
Jonathan Crane is panromantic and asexual
Jonathan Crane has religious trauma and was almost drowned while being baptized
Jonathan Crane has a fake ID and social security number
Jonathan Crane has insomnia
Jonathan Crane sleeps better with multiple soft throw blankets and sleeps even better when he cuddles
Jonathan Crane used to have a stutter but Jonathan Crane trained it out of himself
Jonathan Crane has a southern accent and is surprisingly good at southern cooking
Jonathan Crane used to be terrified of crows but now keeps a crow as a pet and has named it Poe
Jonathan Crane’s favorite food is fried chicken and waffles

Edward Nigma
After being captured by the authorities in Arkham Asylum, the Riddler was placed back into his usual holding cell. Knowing that there was no way he could avoid being sent to the impending new maximum security prison of Arkham City, Riddler decided to make the most of the area before the renovations began. To this end, he hired the services of the Broker to buy multiple buildings in Old Gotham, to be converted into twisted death traps arenas to weed out his fellow prisoners; plus a comfortable hideout. The deal went through after the Broker solved an E-mailed riddle to earn the right to do business with Riddler. Upon being shown the information at the visitor center, Riddler assured the Broker that he had memorized the locations.
He e-mailed the Broker a riddle to do business with him; Nygma wanted new lairs within the Arkham City limits, to eliminate more of the "morons" infesting Gotham. Once the Broker solved the riddler, they met in the visitor center. The Broker gave him the information and told him everything was up to his specifications; though he did voice his annoyance that only Riddler made him "jump through hoops" unlike the rest of his clients.
With the information memorized, Riddler paid Poison Ivy for help; she provided him with a vial, which when smashed, would release a man-eating plant to distract the guards. Being escorted to his cell, Riddler smashed the vial and released the plant; parting from the guard with a terrible pun. Riddler quickly fled to his new headquarters next to the Iceberg Lounge. Per his specifications to an unknown tailor, a full wardrobe of 27 green suits customized to have his question mark motif were ready for him, the emerald being sourced from the wallpaper of a symphony hall in Vienna; along with a custom monitoring system for all his arenas. All was ready for the day the prison would be open; soon Riddler would implement his culling of those he deemed inferior minds.
To the surprise of Riddler, the security of his lair wasn't very good. A homeless had gotten inside, having been seeking shelter. Using the speakers, Riddler informed the man that he was trespassing; the hobo apologized and offered his services to Riddler for chores. Riddler saw a chance to test the trap doors in his lair, tricking the man into one. As the man fell, Riddler told him that he would get back to him about the job. Riddler noted that the Broker did his part by giving him the buildings and materials he asked, but flubbed with whomever he hired to do maintenance. Deciding he has nothing but time, Riddler got to work on reinforcing his defenses.
Soon enough, Arkham City was established; with Riddler having set up an electrified fence and remote TNT charges on his door as safety precautions. Using the men he has undercover in Penguin's Henchmen, Riddler was able to keep a steady supply of food outside his hideout. Riddler made use of his men in Penguin, Two-Face and Joker's gangs in order to set up his challenges and trophies throughout Arkham City, even in the sewers and Wonder City. It is wasn't without risk, as Croc roamed the sewers. An earthquake nearly sank the Amusement Mile, which held two of Riddler's arenas.
The Riddler made contact with Strange using his communications network and revealed he knew a lot of his secrets; such as the fact that he was using Jervis Tetch to control Mayor Quincy Sharp and that he secretly wore a "suit" and wondered if he was worthy of wearing it. The tables turned however, when Riddler mentioned that he would know who Batman was once he defeated him. Strange, basking in Riddler's shock and humiliation, revealed that he already knew who Batman was and did not resort to childish games and puzzles to figure it out. Riddler begged him to tell him, but Strange scoffed, and said that if he could do it, it must be child's play for him. Riddler never contacted Strange again after that, and decided to prove whether or not he was right. Sometime after, the tailor responsible for tailoring Riddler’s suits was arrested (possibly guilty by association) and committed to Arkham Asylum, and Riddler had no clue as to why.
In Arkham City, the Riddler constructed a set of intricate traps inside each of the buildings he had purchased from the Broker, and recruited a number of Riddler Thugs to hide trophies across the city; he also had them infiltrate the gangs of Penguin, Two-Face and Joker, so he could stay informed about anything that might prove a problem to him. Upon learning Batman was in Arkham City, Riddler decided to use Batman's morality against him, and also to ensure his cooperation by taking the staff of the Medical Center hostage, including Aaron Cash. Riddler gave the Enigma Machine to one of the guards and a radio signal, explaining that it would help Batman when he found him; Riddler then proceeded to have the guard kept under watch by one of his thugs undercover in Two-Face's Gang, as Two-Face had abandoned the Solomon Wayne Courthouse after Batman and Catwoman humiliated him. He proceeded to place a victim each in his five death traps, while locking the rest of the staff in his lair, where they would be forced to walk forever on a track, with explosive helmets on their heads.
Batman overheard a TYGER radio transmissions that mentioned the church was no empty of any life, deciding to return and check it out. The church was now adorned with banners filled with questions marks. A glowing "?" on the bell tower caught his attention; once a Batarang was thrown at it, Riddler hacked into his radio and told Batman to enter the church. Once Batman entered, Riddler informed him via a projector that he will have to solve his challenges to earn the right to know where the victims were. After giving Batman his first riddle, Nygma told him to go to the Solomon Wayne Courthouse for the first victim.
As the night went on and Batman rescued more and more hostages, Riddler grew frustrated that his attempts to beat Batman were being thwarted by the Dark Knight's gadgets. All the while, Riddler encouraged Batman to just let the death traps do their job and end the Dark Knight's crusade. When the final victim was rescued from the fifth building, Riddler was left flabbergasted as he designed the room to be unbeatable. Riddler vowed to create a puzzle that would be so demanding, that it would kill him.
Riddler continued to taunt his hostages while he worked on trying to figure out news riddles for Batman. However, unfortunately for him, Oracle figured out the Broker gave Riddler his hideouts; the only other property owned by Riddler was an abandoned train-yard under the bridge next to the Iceberg Lounge. Riddler ensured his security by having an electric fence put up to keep Penguin (and later Two-Face's) thugs from getting in. However, Batman was able to get past the fence using his Line Launcher.
Batman snuck in, avoiding the remaining hostages who were forced to walk with machines, otherwise the helmets on them would explode and kill them all. Batman found a weak spot in the floor that Riddler was standing on, and took him down. Batman strapped Riddler to his own machine, and set him walking around his headquarters. Nigma did not learn that the bombs had been disarmed until Cash decided that he had enough punishment, at which point the medical team returned to the Church with him in tow.
After the events of Protocol 10 were made public, many criminals filed a lawsuit against the Gotham Municipal Government for the numerous illegal activities that they condoned. Nigma was one of these criminals, though he did want to challenge Batman again. Riddler ended up winning the case, with Commissioner Gordon being forced to let him go free despite protesting that Riddler was insane. The inquisitive quizzler of queries simply mocked the commissioner for not being smart enough to convict him. Gordon actually gave Riddler that win.
Riddler later attempted to expose Batman's brutal actions against criminals via the Internet, although this ended up massively backfiring when various people insulted and berated him for trying to attack Gotham's hero. In his fury, the Riddler deleted his emails and then tried to rip out the 128 gigabytes of RAM from the computer's motherboard (which resulted in him getting electrical burns). Riddler seriously considered breaking his laptop, and once again devised plans of revenge against Batman, possibly causing him to lose even more of his sanity. The only reason that he didn't smash it was because a message was sent to him by Scarecrow.
APPEARANCE
Riddler has blue eyes, messy brown hair with glasses. He wore purple, fingerless gloves with covered question marks. He was also wearing his signature green business suit with yellow question marks and, on occasion, his green bowler hat. He also held his question mark cane in his hand.
Height: 6 ft 1 in
Weight: 183 lbs
PERSONALITY
Edward Nigma was defined by his insanity, inferiority complex, violent behaviour and intense narcissism, likened with hubris. However, he was extremely emotionally immature and his nature was that of an overgrown man-child as he was still traumatised by his cruel childhood and his abusive father who undermined him at every turn. Nigma's image of self-awareness is extremely misguided as he deludes himself into believing that he is a flawless and infallible human "colossus" (or in his own words "The World's Greatest Everything"). Another of his delusions is his incapability to understand his own insanity and when Batman calls him out on this, although he gives a detailed definition he says he suffers from none of the sort. Nigma displays anti-social behaviour and his characteristics, even into adult years are similar to that of an adolescent teenager. Amongst these traits of his childishness are competitiveness, recklessness, stubbornness, pride, rash outbursts, fiery temper, aggressive tantrums and sullenness.
Despite being megalomaniacal, psychopathic and egocentric, at his core Nigma is deeply insecure and emotionally scarred. Having never received the recognition he deserved (or at least believed he deserved), it stands to reason that he pathologically has to prove how smart he is, especially to himself and displays what appears to be an inferiority complex in contrast to his overconfident demeanour. He has made it his one and only goal to degrade others, especially Batman, as being stupider than him with with either arrogant insults designed to lower his victims self-esteem or using the unfounded results from his tests (death traps) as evidence of this. In a moment of complete self-righteousness he claims his tests were for the good of society by weeding out those who are intelligent and those who fail, who are by Nigma's definition "stupid", always die. Nigma's magnificently over-fed ego is never damaged, ignoring that he has been defeated, humiliated and imprisoned multiple times, he constantly believes he will come out on top, never thinking history would repeat itself. He is not above cowardice or dropping his arrogant façade by pathetically pleading. An example is when Catwoman, out of revenge for kidnapping her on Halloween began stealing all of his funds and he desperately begs her for mercy.
He often displays hypocritical arrogance. While he assures his hostage, Catwoman that he does not cheat he actually admits during patient logs to Doctor Young that he once did cheat in his school's competition as to impress his father who saw through this and hit him for lying. Later in the game he actually places his adversary, Batman in a "fight he couldn't win" by swarming him with Riddler-Bots that only Catwoman could hit. Nigma defends this while being taken to the GCPD stating that Batman should have been able to hack into the robots mainframe and defeat them all. Undeniably his greatest weakness was that he considered himself undefeatable (ignoring that he has been countless times in the past) and his arrogance makes him grotesquely reckless and overconfident.

Jonathan Crane
Part 2: Arkham Asylum
Story:
Scarecrow was one of the Arkham inmates on the Joker's "party list" and was released during the Clown Prince of Crime's takeover of Arkham Island, both to distract Batman and for the Joker's general amusement, as Crane's experiments often left his victims dead of heart attacks. Crane made use of his secret stash of Fear Toxin, intending to break Batman this time. A fake patient session the Joker had with Batman suggested that Crane had been studying Batman with the Joker, but both were confused as to why Batman hadn't snapped and come over to their side yet.
Batman tracked a kidnapped Commissioner James Gordon to the island's Medical Facility. While Batman saved the staff, Joker refers to Crane as one of two "old friends" coming to the party: "one will be absolutely terrified if you leave without saying hello." After he rescued the staff, Batman took out a raiding party of henchmen before he took the elevator to the lower levels to follow Gordon's forensic trail of tobacco. The Joker taunted Batman through the Asylum's CCTV system, and considered releasing the elevator from its cables as a joke. As Batman made his way into the basement levels, he began coughing due to a colorless gas being pumped into the elevator; "prepare to face your greatest fears... All of them!"
Scarecrow had already gone to work with torturing new victims for research data, injecting them with his Fear Toxin and watching as they all died of heart-attacks before fleeing into another part of the building. Noting that the "good doctor" had started work early, Joker laughed that Batman would be buzzed through for his "appointment" when Scarecrow was ready, going on to ask what the Dark Knight feared most.
Batman used the vents to bypass the doors, finding Commissoner Gordon calling for help through one of the grates. Moments later, Batman emerged from the vents to find the corpse of his dear friend. His mind reeling from one of his greatest fears, Batman attempted to call Oracle to inform her, but was met with an automated message telling him that her number was not in service. Batman attempted to hunt Scarecrow down, only to find himself in the Morgue, where he was confronted by the reanimated corpses of his parents and a twisted obstacle course that was overseen by a giant, omnipotent Scarecrow. After he realized that he was experiencing a Fear Toxin-induced hallucination, Batman overcame the delusion by avoiding the Scarecrow's fiery gaze, and shined a Bat-Signal — a symbol of his willpower — directly into Scarecrow, temporarily defeating the hooded villain and freeing himself from the hallcuination.
Batman returned to his senses, just in time to discover that Scarecrow was long gone; the most likely explanation is that the Fear Toxin in Crane's syringes had run out, and he needed to refill them before making another attempt to break Batman. The Dark Knight returned to the corpse he thought was Gordon, but found it was actually a security guard; the Fear Toxin had affected Batman's mind more than he had thought.
Over the course of the night, Batman uncovered the mystery of the Titan Formula and investigated the Arkham Mansion to either find Dr. Penelope Young or to destroy her notes. Although he succeeded in the latter, the Joker wasn't outdone yet, and sent Victor Zsasz after Dr. Young. Batman raced off to find her, but was gassed by Scarecrow again, trapping Batman in a hallucination of the night his parents were murdered. Batman walked down a seemingly never-ending hall that turned into Crime Alley. Hearing the voices of his parents and their murderer, he fell to his knees and tuned into his nine-year-old self, kneeling before his parents corpses. He overcame this part of the delusion by remembering the kind words of a younger Gordon, returned to his adult state, used all his skills to once again avoid the Scarecrow's gaze, and temporarily defeated him with the Bat-Signal. Batman managed to free himself a second time, discovering that he had gotten himself trapped inside the belfry. This also made him too late to prevent Zsasz from taking Dr. Young hostage in Warden Quincy Sharp's Office.
As the night wore on, Batman learned from Poison Ivy of a plant spore in the Asylum's sewer system that would help him concoct an antidote to the Titan Formula and returned to the Intensive Treatment Center to retrieve it from Killer Croc's Lair. As Batman made his way to the elevators, he began coughing from the Fear Toxin again and experienced a strange kind of vertigo: his vision was filled with static to the distorted sound of the Joker's laughter. At this point, Batman began reliving the earlier events of the night, but in Joker's place.
The Joker arrived at Arkham in the Batmobile with a handcuffed Batman in the passenger's seat. The Joker took Batman to the Intensive Treatment Center. Batman ranted and raved, insisted that he hadn't killed "that family," and demanded to be cut free. He resisted Crane's attempts to examine him, leading Scarecrow to declare him a lost cause. Left to the Joker's mercy, the Clown Prince of Crime aimed his gun at Batman's head and fired at point-blank range.
After he realized that he was suffering yet another Fear Toxin hallucination, Batman climbed out of his own grave and made his way past the cells that were full of other insane Batmen to find the Bat-Signal. Just like last time, Crane made Batman see him as an omnipotent giant that could kill him with a single palm strike; he even called in henchmen to attack him, but Batman beat them easily. About to break Batman's mind, Crane was shocked when Batman shined the Bat-Signal.
Free of the illusion, Batman grabbed Crane by his hood. However, Scarecrow plunged his syringes into Batman's gauntlet, dosing the Dark Knight with more Fear Toxin to fight off. The illusion now had the giant Scarecrow watching Batman resist numerous skeletal attackers, including two Titan-enhanced henchmen. With Batman occupied, Scarecrow fled into the adjacent corridor; the bars would keep Batman at bay the next time he broke free.
Every time Batman defeated a number of enemies, one of the three Bat-Signals would activate and damage Scarecrow. Batman prevailed yet again, and defeated as many skeletal warriors as needed to strike Scarecrow with the three Bat-Signals. Scarecrow was left shocked by this turn of events as Batman once again gripped his hood through the bars. He gave Batman another quick injection of toxin, buying himself time to flee to the elevator with a pouch full of his toxin.
As Batman regained his senses, Crane taunted him, asking why the Dark Knight couldn't see that the relationship between him and the super criminals was symbiotic - they need each other. Crane rode the elevator all the way down to the lowest level to access the sewers, unaware that the sewer system served as the lair of Killer Croc. Joker's henchmen locked the door behind him, hoping Croc would eat Crane, as they find him creepy; however, Batman pummeled them and unlocked the door.
As Batman examined a Titan-mutated plant, Scarecrow appeared and warned him to stay away, threatening to drop the bag of Fear Toxin into the underground river, which would fill the cave with Batman's worst nightmares and, even worse, contaminate Gotham's water supply for 100 years. Before Scarecrow could make good on his threat, Killer Croc burst from the water and grabbed Crane, having mistaken him for a guard, a stray inmate, or Batman. Scarecrow lost his grip on the Fear Toxin and dropped it harmlessly to the ground.
Fearing for his own life, Scarecrow flailed hopelessly to get free of Killer Croc's grip. Right as the monster was about to take a bite out of him, Batman saved Crane by throwing a Batarang at Croc's electrified collar to briefly activate it. Though the zap from the shock collar stopped Croc from eating Scarecrow, he still refused to let go, and dove back into the water with a screaming Crane in his grip.
To Scarecrow's bad luck, the collar's zapping angered Croc. In retaliation, Croc severely mauled Crane's face. Batman again saved Crane's life from Croc when the mutated man-eater detected the Dark Knight's footsteps on the floating planks deeper in the sewers. Croc left Crane to die of his injuries in favor of killing his main target: Batman.
Personality:
In Arkham Asylum, Scarecrow closely followed his over-the-top comic book portrayal: a downright, sadistic villain who took glee in murdering innocent people and/or driving them into insanity, complete with a high-pitched voice with a loud and dramatic tone to it. As evidenced by his Interview Tapes, Scarecrow was extremely intelligent and manipulative, as he managed to convince at least two of his doctors that he wasn't actually insane. This included Dr. Young, who even entertained the possibility that he was innocent. Scarecrow displayed a respect for the concept of fear that bordered on veneration. He believed fear to be the driving force in people's lives, saying that almost every action you took was a byproduct of fear, and wanted to prove his megalomania by using fear to control others. This is further shown in Arkham Knight where after detonating the Cloudburst, drowning Gotham in his toxin he proudly describes it the "city of fear" and "my domain."
Unlike many of Batman's foes, who commit crimes in order to gain money or power, Scarecrow's only motivation seemed to be a compulsive need to cause fear in others. In his interview tapes, Dr. Kellerman stated that the only thing Scarecrow seemed to care about was his "research." This is exemplified by Scarecrow treating their therapy sessions as though HE was the doctor, and Kellerman was his patient. Scarecrow would even create interview tapes of his own while observing his victims, and expressed fascination in understanding the root of their fears while showing no concern for their safety or wellbeing. Even in the middle of being captured by Batman, Scarecrow desperately asked him what he saw while under the effects of his toxin in order to continue to "study" its effects.
Appearance:
Jonathan Crane, in his Scarecrow outfit, wears a long, brown burlap-like coat that is torn and frayed in several places. Underneath, he wears dark pants similarly distressed and showing signs of wear and tear, suggesting a rough and lived-in appearance. A simple rope belt cinches his waist, from which a small, roughly sewn burlap sack hangs. The rope is thick and braided, slightly frayed at the ends, contributing to the overall sense of roughness and age. His footwear is also wrapped in similar beige bandages, secured around his ankles and finishing at the tips of his shoes, which look worn down. He has a elaborate contraption attached to his gloved hands. It is a complex mechanical device with multiple syringes filled with a glowing orange-red liquid connected by translucent green tubes. These syringes protrude from the fingers, giving the hand a menacing, claw-like quality. The device emanates a faint, orange glow.

Edward Nigma
Part 1: Arkham Origins/Arkham Shadow
Story:
The future Edward Nigma committed his first crime when he was still in grade school. Constantly belittled and called a moron by his abusive father, he entered a school contest to win everyone's approval; solve a puzzle and win a prize. Nashton broke in late at night and put the puzzle together as many times as possible until he had the winning solution. His father accused him of cheating and beat him for lying.
Undeterred, Edward dedicated himself to learning, and became a skilled engineering and computer hacking genius. He found employment as a member of the GCPD's Cyber Crime Division and became convinced that Gotham's long history of corruption was the result of intellectual and moral failing rather than economics. To "improve" the city's standing, Nashton used his position and skills to coordinate a large network of operatives and compile a large collection of blackmail material connected to prominent Gotham officials.
Before Christmas Eve, Nashton collected and hid extortion data files while also searching for the real identity of Batman, whom he believed was either Harvey Dent or Bruce Wayne. To maintain his cover within the GCPD, Nashton may have cultivated genuine criminal ties himself as he was soon contacted by Black Mask (or so he thought) to distract the vigilante.
Nashton, under the alias of Enigma, used an army of informants to collect a cornucopia of blackmail information about the city's most corrupt individuals. Enigma planned to release this information to the public on Christmas Day, and intended to trigger a chain reaction that would end in Gotham City's collapse.
Enigma recognized Batman as his greatest obstacle and had set up multiple layers of fail safes that included: hiding his servers behind a billboard, planting signal jammers inside the Gotham City Radio Towers that Batman had used to pilot the Batwing, set up dozens of relays across the city, employed an army of Thugs to hamper him at every turn, and had used his informants to hide all of the extortion data that he had collected all throughout Gotham.
Enigma continued to taunt Batman as he attempted to disrupt all of the radio towers, but eventually Batman succeeded. Finally, after destroying all relays, interrogating all informants, and collecting all the data packs, Batman came back to Enigma's HQ and destroyed his server. Enigma accepted temporary defeat, while he claimed that he had held onto the biggest, dirtiest secret that had put his collection of data to shame. Batman later unlocked Enigma's secret room, which revealed several items of interest: newspaper clips that indicated Enigma's research on Batman's identity (With the two main suspects that were Bruce Wayne and Harvey Dent), pressure pads, cages, and one green glowing question mark that would later become the Riddler Trophy. Later, Enigma was deduced to being Edward Nashton, who was the head of the GCPD's Cyber Crime Division, by Alfred Pennyworth in a conversation with Batman in the Batcave.
A coded message within the GCPD Server and Telecom Rooms revealed that Nashton had only recently joined the organization as its Cyber Crime Division head, and revealed that he had only joined the GCPD simply to gain inside information through his newly acquired access to the entire city's infrastructure and files, which was eventually used as extortion data on all of Gotham.
The next day, just as Mayor Hamilton Hill was about to appoint Peter Grogan to replace the deceased Gillian B. Loeb as GCPD Commissioner, various media outlets received envelopes from an anonymous individual containing evidence that implicated Hill and Grogan as having ties with the Maroni Family. It was strongly implied that Enigma had been the one who was responsible, as he had yet to reveal his "biggest, dirtiest secret."
6 days of public protest ensued until New Year's Day, when Mayor Hill resigned from office in disgrace, although he had not ruled out a possible attempt at re-election during the new year. Regardless of whether he ran for office or not, his resignation meant that Grogan did not become Commissioner.
This meant that, ironically enough, Enigma's plans had a profoundly positive effect on Gotham City as they had finally revealed the corruption and conspiracy within Gotham's politics to the world at large, so the public could force their corrupt public officials out of office and appoint more ethical and principled individuals instead. Whether this was Engima's true intention was unknown, though his previous statements of wanting chaos in the streets seem to make it unlikely, as the resolution to the scandal ended on relatively peaceful terms.
Edward Nashton spent the next six months building a personal fortune with his cyber crime skills, while adopting a new persona known as the Riddler; having chosen to theme himself after riddles, after having deemed Batman one when they first made contact and with his interest in riddles becoming reignited after seeing the lengths Batman went to finding his data packs.
Some time during the week of the Independence Day Riots, Riddler snuck into Blackgate Prison and stole Carmine Falcone’s blackmail ledger from his secret vault in Maximum Security, before leaving behind a datapack that contained a message for Carmine. In the message, he gloats that he stole the incriminating evidence and added it to his collection of extortion data, and insinuated an awareness of Carmine’s relationship with his wife, Louisa, and an unnamed illegitimate progeny (possibly Catwoman, as evident by his use of feline-related vocabulary). Anticipating that Batman may find this message as well, he gloated that Batman would always be a step behind him.
Some time after the Day of Wrath, Edward legally changed his last name to Nigma as a call-back to Batman's Enigma alias for him, and would go on to become a notorious criminal in Gotham known for his riddles. In addition to his riddles, Nigma decided to create death traps to kill who he considered to be the less intelligent people of Gotham; while deeming them "entertainment" for true intellectuals who he believed could solve them easily. Riddler even hired henchmen of his own, though he secretly loathes their low intellects; despite this, he had them infiltrate various other criminal cabals to get him information on other villains. Riddler clashed with Batman numerous times over the years, with deaths abundant and his penchant for riddles aggravating the GCPD, and his obsessive need for attention making him leave riddles and clues for Batman to solve and eventually stop him.
Personality:
Edward Nigma was defined by his insanity, inferiority complex, violent behaviour and intense narcissism, likened with hubris. Jonathan Crane
Part 1: Arkham Origins/Arkham Shadow
Story:
Jonathan Crane was the meek but intelligent child of a normal Gotham family. Unfortunately, he suffered years of bullying, which caused him to be in a constant state of terror. In order to overcome his phobias and fears of being teased for his obsession with his studies, Jonathan dedicated his life to studying fear, becoming a professor of psychology and psychiatry.
Though not active during the Christmas Eve riots, a sign in sheet at Blackgate prison showed that he had made multiple visits to the facility, most likely for test subjects to conduct his research on. Interestingly, when Batman looks at the sign in sheet, Crane hadn’t signed out, implying that he was somewhere in Blackgate during the first riot.
Additionally, Crane had flyers throughout Gotham, encouraging people to participate in a clinical research study at Gotham University. The study was asking individuals suffering from depression or a mental disorder to volunteer to test out “experimental medications” for 40 weeks. One of these flyers was seen aboard the Penguins ship, the Final Offer when Batman arrived to interrogate the crime lord.
Crane nearly lost his job at the university after firing a loaded gun in a crowded classroom to illustrate a point about fear. The only thing that saved his job was his remarkable ability to attract funding for the university. He was eventually the subject of a bidding war which resulted in his being offered a "handsome" sum of money.
However, Crane was not motivated by money. Despite his controversial theatrics, his theories on the Jungian shadow and using it to control behavior had caught the attention of TYGER, who offered him a job at Blackgate Prison to research fear and nightmares, replacing Professor Hugo Strange as Director of Rehabilitation. Dr. Penelope Young would replace Crane’s post as professor of psychology and psychiatry at the university.
Crane then made a gas that induced fear in his patients, believing that criminals were the perfect subject for his tests as they were effectively the embodiment of his childhood bullies. Crane ran his tests on the prisoners at the prison to improve his toxin and continued publishing papers on the concept of the "shadow". He even published a book titled "Illuminating the Tenebrous Self".
Due to Warden Joseph's incompetence in being unable to prevent Joker from causing mass breakouts at Blackgate, he was fired, allowing Crane his animity back, aside from the distrust newly graduated Dr. Quinzel as his coworker. With TYGER hired to upgrade the prison, things only got easier as neither Chief Bolton nor the guards cared about inmate abuse.
Crane continued his experiments with his chemical, trying to force the prisoners to face their inner darkness and become one with it; believing facing the ID is the right path to accepting one's self. Unfortunately, he ended up killing and breaking the minds of a lot of prisoners. So he ended up lying and kidnapping Quinzel's patients, claiming she was incompetent at her job. After attempting to use Arnold Wesker as a subject, he was confronted by Batman with Quinzel's aid. As Batman fought against his ID due to the toxin, Crane watched in amazement. Having inhaled some of his own toxin, He began muttering to himself that his biggest fear was the primal fear which drives humans, Laughing softly and slowly breaking his mind.
When Matches Malone was falsely accused of killing an undercover cop, Crane was called in to the court as a psych evaluation expert. Unfortunately, he attempted to gas Malone with his toxin. Malone slapped the canister away and it broke on Harvey Dent, disfiguring his left side due to the chemical being caustic when exposed to the air. Crane blamed Malone to cover himself as Harvey was dragged out; screaming in pain at the wrong person.
Personality:
His life and personality (pre-Scarecrow) is explored in Arkham Shadow, where he is shown as disdainful towards Dr. Quinzel's "talk therapy"-focused treatment philosophy. Crane, at least in his pre-criminal days, put his faith in bio-chemistry alone and held no truck with Quinzel's gentler, sensitive approach, at one point chastising her expression of sympathy towards a patient with "That's it? The subject has no use for your feelings, Doctor. He needs a clinical diagnosis, not a bleeding heart!". He is also a bit of a disciplinarian where rule-breaking patients are concerned, as seen with him spotting Irving “Matches” Malone, whilst he was arguing with Dr. Quinzel, assuming that Malone was simply a patient who was late to group therapy, and so he advised him to be on time next time, which he seemingly meant as a veiled threat. He also has no qualms resorting to name-calling when patients make him angry, suggesting a childish side, as seen when he called Arnold Wesker a “feeble-minded worm” whilst trying to confiscate Woody, and calling the latter a “foul-mouthed finger puppet”, when Woody taunts Batman over the Blackgate Prison loudspeakers. His choice of put-downs also suggests that he has a Superiority Complex.
When Lock-Up was unable to command the prison's TYGER guards and Crane was put in charge, he very vocally expressed disinterest in hearing about the specifics of their duties, including their attempts to stop Batman from bypassing prison security. He merely wanted to be left alone to conduct his research, and considered everything else a trifling distraction.
Appearance:
Jonathan Crane is a thin man with brown hair (which was greying) and blue eyes. He looks tired and unkempt, and his eyes bloodshot, likely down to his lifestyle, devoting most of his time to his research (and possibly being exposed in some way to his toxins). He is shown to have slight yellow pigment of the skin. He wears a shabby white labcoat, along with a brown waistcoat and black shirt and a necktie that resembles a noose. He also carried a revolver for use in emergency situations. Crane is partially sighted, relying on black circular spectacles.
When conducting his fear experiments he wears a brown coloured gas mask, acting as a precursor to his future Scarecrow mask.
