Power Cycle

Most magical girls in media are granted a special set of clothes, which they can conveniently put on when the need arises via a particularly spectacular transformation sequence.

Hoshiko's costume is going to have to be a little more... artisanal than that.

Although I'm sure we can still make the transformation sequence happen via the power of nanomachines or something.

I'm naming this piece after the song that inspired the scene, by Lena Raine. Check it out!

You know, it's always a bit jarring to me when in movies and comic books a character gets their superpowers and shows up in a high quality costume two scenes later with no explanation. Even a cosplayer needs months to put a decent costume together. Most Magical Girl stories, unlike superheroes, get their costumes as part of the deal with their mascot mentors. But what I'm doing with Hoshiko is a bit of a deconstruction of the genre, so she gets no such luck. However, living in a cyberpunk world, we can use technology where magic doesn't suffice.

A quick illustration I put together for a summer-themed Tekken event.

It was probably Lili's idea to go to the beach, but as she probably never had to pack bags for a day out in her whole life she didn't concern herself with anything else other than looking pretty, leaving Asuka to begrudgingly pick up her slack.

I didn't want to just draw Tekken girls in bikini standing there and looking pretty for the camera, so I came up with a whole scene for it.

Sometimes I feel like I'd have way more followers if I just drew pretty girls in bikini though.

I mean, on one hand it's cool that I feel like tackling more complex illustrations with more moving parts. But working a full job I only have so much time every week and I'm trying to get at least one illustration done a month.

Hopefully I have something to post by the end of June.

You know, since this illustration was already so simple, I decided to go ahead and almost double my drawing and rendering time by making two versions. Her uniform makes more sense for the scene, but I love her classic Tekken 5 jumpsuit. It's peak Asuka for me.

The photo I used in yesterday's template.

This was an accident.

Honestly I never intended to give my Azem a face. I wanted to go to Amaurot and take a photo of somebody in a mask and a hood just to have something to fill the Azem photo with. And... then I kind of got distracted.

I'm still not committing though, lol. If anybody ask, this is just the idea that Wilan has of the man. But eh, maybe he isn't too far off.

I didn't quite know what to make of Azem's mask. I figured it'd be red, some sources say it's black, but either way I didn't have a bespoke model to represent it visuallly.

In the end I just ended up recoloring the standard white mask. Given the pseudo-canon nature of this portrait, that might be for the best.

Azem enjoyers, is there any mask mod you like to use?

I filled this FFXIV template by FeralCitrus. It was an interesting ride because I'm usually very adamant about not defining too much of my Azem― and I still am. But I have a very clear idea of the vague and nebulous impression that my Azem has left on those dear to him, and that reflected, distorted and incomplete image is all my WoL Wilan knows of the man.

But... I think I still learned something while going through the process.

It's funny because, personality wise, when I thought about it they seemed to either be identical or diametrically opposed, very few in-between. It comes down, I think, to a "nature versus nurture" matter. It's fundamentally the same soul but it was brought up in two very different lives. And I think my WoL latches onto the few differences he knows about, seeking refuge from the existential crisis of reincarnation by finding solid reassurance of how Azem and he are fundalmentally different people, different individuals who chose to walk different paths; no matter how identical their predisposition was, he wasn't just the less polished copy of a more exceptional man of an age lost to time.
