if they didn’t want me to give fictional characters religious guilt then they shouldn’t have made catholicism the way that it is

Happy STS! Do your characters have any distinctive mannerisms?
Happy (late) STS! Definitely!
Because of a prominent missing tooth, Lawrence has close-lipped smile and hides his laughter and yawns with a hand. Deacon Elihu uses a cane and when he needs both of his hands free, he tends to loop it over his arm. This makes others incredibly nervous. Maria has some of my favorite mannerisms, only because it is nearly impossible for Samuel to tell when she ends and the Eternal Friend begins. Some of her more telling mannerisms include tilting her head to the side (as if someone is whispering in her ear), rolling her ankles and wrists (which make horrendous pops and cracks for a girl her age), and muttering to herself with animated gestures (as if she is speaking with another person face-to-face).

Three Questions About Your OC
Tumblr media
Thank you for the mention, @gaslightwestern! I loved learning more about Elijah! I used Samuel for this ask, but I might drag in Francis for a proper introduction in a little while.
How would you describe their personality / aesthetic?
A devoted investigative journalist, Samuel Thomas grounds himself in the realities of the tangible. Charismatic, observant, and effortlessly insincere when the situation demands, he has the habit of inserting himself into other's lives with relative ease. Like a summer downpour, aggression is quick to roll over him when someone ignores his inquisitive nature or purposefully covers up an injustice.
What's your favorite thing about them?
The Guilt. Samuel wears a heavy shroud woven from warps of remorse and wefts of distress at all times. He likes to pretend his agreeable facade renders it invisible to others. It does not. Along with this, his charm can't always save him from his deeply irritable and often invasive need to know. This has lead some to discover that Samuel has an irresistibly punchable face. The twice-broken nose has taught him nothing.
Fun facts about them / their creation?
Out of all my characters, Samuel is probably the one who has changed faces the most. What began as a throw-away minor character appearing in a single final scene, he became more and more demanding as the story progressed, to the point that I couldn't ignore the role he needed to play as a skeptical and completely unreliable narrator.
I'm tagging @charlesjosephwrites, @spideronthesun, and anyone else who'd like to join in!

i loveeeeeee nonlinear storytelling. show me where we are. now show me how we got here. the end before the beginning. show me how it was inevitable or how many chances we had to change things(nothing was ever going to change). let's meet in the middle as all the puzzle pieces slide into place hell yeah that's the good shit.

New piece! Am calling her “Skör” (fragile in Swedish).
Assembled from strips of lace, a doily, and some fiddly needle lace and crochet for the teeth. Starched with diluted wood glue.
Perfect in time for Halloween!

WIP INTRO : TEOEH : PART TWO : 1908
At dusk, she will draw the white gauze over her head as Uncle Paul barricades the Garden's doors. There she will sit, alone, with little food or drink, without light, for three days. She is left with a single candle, but it is not hers to use, so she will not light it. This is how it is done. This is how it must go.
Francis Skews cannot remember a life before Iowa Lodge and it would be foolish to attempt to. Her father’s family has held the Lodge in the heart of their hands since her great-grandfather’s ascension and as the sole Caller, she stands as the figurehead for the next generation of her birthright. But suddenly limited by her patient’s needs and the hierarchy’s attempts to strip the Lodge of its heritage, Francis sinks herself further into the mutterings of spirits and the embraces of crumbling adits to preserve the memory of her forbearers. Should her lantern sputter in the mine’s belly, she will welcome the dark to swallow her whole.
General:
Status: Draft Zero/Plotting Stage.
Genre(s): historical fiction, family drama, gothic horror.

[ABOUT]
I’m Carter (she/him) and I’m a 20 year old Black lesbian. Writing has been my passion and favorite hobby for as long as I can remember, but when I’m not writing I’m out following my second passion in college (environmental science). My activity wanes in and out, but as of May 2025 I’m still here! My main blog is @phantomfemmes, which is where I like and follow from as well as post about whatever my heart desires.
I am going through an obsession with horror, so if you write that, feel free to tell me about your wips. I’m also a big lover of poetry, “flowery” prose, and anything featuring wlwoc as main characters.
[WIPS]
I have two main wips that I work on from time to time:
The Taste of Hallowed Earth (formerly All That Remains)
Twelve years ago, Sadie Copeland’s older sister, Leila, vanished from their hometown in Salvation, Mississippi and her family was never the same again. Sadie’s mother packed their things, driving until Salvation disappeared in the rearview mirror and the whole thing was nothing but a nightmare. But no matter how far they drove or how much time passed, Sadie had never been able to shake the feeling that there’s more to the story than what her mother let on.
Following the death of her mother, nineteen year old Sadie finds herself back in Salvation, the place where it all began. Upon arriving there, it is clear that something sinister is going on—something that no one wants to talk about and that everyone hides from when the sun goes down. And while Sadie has never believed in ghost stories (at least, not in the spectral sense), she can’t help but fear what may be lurking in the darkness that surrounds Salvation.
Themes:  gothic horror, southern gothic, unreliable narrator, small towns, unreality, paranoia, death, grief, estranged familial relationships, mother/daughter relationships, paranormal, religion, trauma, ghosts, queerness, psychological horror, religious horror
In the Heart of the Ocean
In the Heart of the Ocean follows Carolina “Caro” Bell as she recounts the disappearance of her best friend Moira from their quiet coastal town as teenagers, and Moira’s subsequent reappearance three years later after emerging from the depths of the ocean with no memory of where she’d been—only to disappear forever the following year.
When Caro’s niece, who she has temporary custody of, nearly drowns in that same sea twenty years later, Caro decides to finally explore the secrets contained in its dark and murky depths. But in order to do so, she must first confront the past and the truth surrounding Moira’s disappearance.
Themes: literary fiction, queerness, magical realism

Pls tell me more about THE AFFLICTION !
Of course!
"Mr. Jos. R-- has come down with a curious malady leaving him bedridden at his P-- home. Mr. R--, who was good enough to give The Democrat his account of the Odd Fellow's latest "drekzel" party last week, has long shown signs of extreme overexposure to mineral. This aliment is not uncommon for miners such as Mr. R--, but he has since been struck down by grim tremors and a solidity of the joints that leaves him frozen in place for great spans of time. Dr. S--, of the same town, is caring for Mr. R-- and urges readers who exhibit similar troubles to come to him at once." - first recorded account of the Affliction from The Iowa Democrat, August 30, 1878
The Affliction (aka the Despair or das Leid) is a fictionalized disease that's a main component in all parts of tEoEH. For this illness, I took a lot of inspiration from accounts of lead poisoning and the much later encephalitis lethargica pandemic of the 1920s, the latter of which killed my great-granduncle in a matter of weeks in 1925. While the cause of the Affliction remains unknown in universe, people begin to associate the illness and its treatment with Iowa Lodge's spiritual activities, leading to a more insular and isolated Lodge in the final decades of the 19th century.
