Dear Community,
Thank you to all of you that have loved and supported our small nature and play based preschool program. It has been a wild ride these past five years, from changing ownership and directorship, hiring additional staff and continuing our program through a pandemic.
Unfortunately, we have come to the hard conclusion that its time to close our preschool program. But Wild Roots Community will live on by providing and offering attuned, nature and played based family classes and intimate toddler care in our licensed home child care.
Please continue to look out for fun music and art offerings from Teachers Mega and Sage as well!
Love,
Mega
p.s. this photo was taken from our first year as a school community!

Although our program is play and nature based we still have tons of opportunities for Early Literacy from story time, to field guides our students are seeing, learning and writing letters.

We are a month into our second year during a pandemic. These times have been some of the most rewarding and the most challenging for our small program. If nothing else, this pandemic has shown us how truly interconnected we are to one another. It has proven that our choices and action matter.
It has taken a lot of work, preparation, guidance and research to make the guidelines and protocols that we have in place to keep all staff, children and community members safe. It has also taken a lot of trust and honestly for the families and staff to follow them.
At Wild Roots Playschool we wear masks every day and social distance during meals. We wash hands with biodegradable soap and water everyday before eating and wipe hands after eating. We always make sure to offer children choices with their masks- sometimes after a big game of tag or a long sunny hike the children want and need a mask break.
We give the children the choice throughout the day to distance themselves, 6 ft. but not more from the group to take their masks off and breath deep. However, we let the children know if they want to play close to others their masks need to be on. The children are much better at this than most adults in this country.
We are infinitely grateful that our school remained open and that we are still teaching, learning, connecting and exploring the wild together!

It’s our favorite time of year at Wild Roots Playschool. The sourgrass and miner’s lettuce are ready for picking! The Acacia tree at our Monday, Glen Canyon location is blooming! The plum trees are letting us know, spring is here in San Franciso! The children have been really interested in worms recently. With all the rain, the worms had to go to surface of the trails instead of borrowing down below us. We spent several hikes, gently picking up worms and moving them off the hiking path onto a safer area for them to be. We have been reading a lot about worms, how they help plants and the environment and how important they are! This past week, we painted cardboard worms!

We know 2020 has been a difficult year for everyone! For our small San Francisco based forest playschool it has been a year of transitions, unknowns and new health and safety protocols. We are pleased to say that we have begun our third year as a small outdoor, play based, emergent program. We continue to strive for an anti-bias curriculum tailored to the needs of each individual family while also maintaining a nourishing community for children and families.
We meet in some of the green spaces of San Francisco, Glen Canyon, the Presidio and Golden Gate Park. We are entering into the second month of our 2020-2021 school year.
September, we welcomed three new students to our school. We introduced safety agreements, using animal calls to keep our group close to adults. We have continued to keep music apart of our daily rhythm as well as art!
Stay tuned for more and stay in touch!

Summer 2020 session!
We have been hosting summer session since June 15th. It’s hard to believe we only have three weeks left. Masks are required but we always make individual cozy spots 6 feet apart that the children eat, drink, and have a ‘mask off’ break in.
Our play has been rich. Lots of dramatic play with family play, fort building and pretend kitchen. We also have had a gross motor play climbing, running and playing hide and seek. And when we need some quiet time, we have been writing cooperative stories and painting together.

It’s really important to talk to your children about race. Here’s some literature that can help get you started if you’re not sure how to start.

March 2020!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We continued our animal curriculum at the beginning of March. We made clay faces with natural materials and skin-toned paint, mixing and matching the paint tones to match our skin tones. Then we used that same mixing and matching to make foot prints or 'tracks' ther term for animal footprints.
Mid March, COVID-19 began to hit the U.S. with Shelter-In-Place mandates and all school activties moved to Zoom and on-line documents for activty sharing.
