Springer Series in X: Amazing, high-level but terse proofs. Prepare for pain
Published by Dover: Great introductions to different fields in mathematics, fun reading!
<1980s poorly scanned conference proceedings, technical report, or laboratory publications; typewriter set with handwritten equations: Non-standard notation everywhere because they were making it up on the spot, amazing view into the historical origins or the subject, more pithy jokes and catty remarks about other's work than you might expect
if there's one thing ive learned from my math education it's the ability to judge a textbook by it's cover:
fancy cover with actual picture, fewer than 15 years old, $300: absolute dogshit. time wasting exercises, poor exposition, that weird gloss they put on the pages probably makes it too toxic to use as kindling
title is just name of subject, referred to by author, 50 years old with like 3 editions: excellent. compact proofs, exercises good enough people refer to them by number in conversation. available for free by foraging somewhere they grow naturally
title is some shit like paul's notes, "cover" is just default latex titlepage, distributed as pdf to grad classes or by advisor: best coverage of whatever (usually niche) topic it's about in the world. crystal clear exposition. solutions to exercises available by emailing grad students working under author

Hi, I’m responding to your embroidery question! I’ve been doing cross stitch, black work, and embroidery for about three years now and thought I could be of some help!
I started with one of those beginner embroidery kits and I still use it to this day!
The main thing I would recommend is ALWAYS buy quality thread. You can have the most expensive kit and it wouldn’t mean anything if the thread is bad. I personally enjoy using DMC but definitely research it. On top of that, make sure her embroidery hoops are quality and won’t loosen over time. Wooden hoops you’ll want to inspect and make sure it isn’t splintering/the tightening bolt isn’t loose or rusting. I tend to use plastic hoops to stitch and then put the finished product in a wooden hoop to aid in longevity.
As for the parts of my kit I love, I would recommend a plastic snap frame and then a needlework scroll if her projects get bigger over time. Needle minders are VERY good, they’re magnets that cling to the fabric and keep the threaded needles out of the way in case she’s switching colors or taking a break and she doesn’t want to lose the needle.
A hands free embroidery stand also worked wonders for me, as it let me work on my desk with both hands to stitch and keep the thread taut versus holding the hoop with one and working with the other.
I know this is a lot of information but I hope this helped!
Thank you so much ❤️ This is amazing advice I'll put it to good use!

Does anyone have any recommendations for good quality tools and materials to get started with in embroidery? My wife is a very talented knitter, and has mentioned she's always wanted to get into embroidery, so I thought I'd surprise her and get her some starting materials. Unfortunately I know nothing about what is good value/quality and I don't want to get her one of those poor quality, cheap "starter kits" that end up being eventually replaced. What are some good tools and materials to get someone started, that will continue to be used for a long time? In other words, what's something you wish you had bought right from the beginning of your embroidery hobby?

Anyone else come to some wildly different conclusion on Ghibli movies with age?
Kiki's Delivery Service: Kid: Being a witch is so cool! Adult: Growing up and growing apart from the life you had before is a natural progression of life. You aren't losing the old parts of yourself, just finding new pieces that were there all along. Life is about changing, you'll never stay stagnant.
Ponyo: Kid: She's such a cute fish, you should always follow your dreams! Adult: Leaving home will not take you away from your family. Even when you're miles away and you feel like you're in different worlds your family will still be there, encouraging you. Parents are meant to let go of their kids at some point.
Howl's Moving Castle: Kid: Sophie's a big sister like me! I want to a princess in a magic castle. Adult (I've also read the book): Sometimes you don't find your place in this world, you make one. The people that come along with you will see you through every ugly part of yourself and you would do the same for them. Chase after that shooting star.
Spirited Away: Kid: What just happened... Adult: SHIT HAPPENS! And it sucks, life sucks but you keep going. You can cry along the way. You are being so fucking brave for even going on this hellish journey we call life. It's okay. You're okay.

Just saw someone with “use whatever pronouns you use for yourself for me” in bio. I honestly never considered the depth the pronoun metagame could have, we’ve barely scratched the surface with this shit

I just had the opportunity to walk around the old office of a eminent scientist in my institute. Without naming exactly who it was, it would be pretty much equivalent to walking around Einstein's office in the Institute for Advanced Study in the last 50s. Shelves and shelves and stacks and stacks of books, papers, journals. My entire research field was essentially founded within those four walls. I saw a lot of myself in that office, and it made me profoundly sad. Sad that myself and others did not or will not experience that kind of freedom. I don't know what lies in the future of my field, but I hope that someday, future researchers can have that privilege.
