Guard You - Young K Solo Debut!!!

today, my boy young k had his solo debut. it's been a while since i've been on here. meanwhile, i found many more reasons to love this man and even more to seek comfort in and be cocooned by his music and writing.

so here's my extremely amateur, but honest review of guard you!

lyrics - as usual, young k's done us proud with his writing and has managed to bridge a very large gap between 'profound' and 'commercially viable'. somehow his music doesn't seem like he wrote it to fulfill an appeal, it seems like he wrote it with one purpose only - to tell his story. i do think that there are some gems among the day6 songs that he's written that could easily outdo this in terms of lyricism, but i've learnt the hard way that one must never compare different stories to each other, especially when the same artist is telling them. there's no other way this story could be told, rather than in these words.

music - this is beautiful. any song arranged by him is gorgeous, a masterpiece, i could go on. young k creates a sense of impending doom right before the chorus, a crescendo even the video reflects(a crashing asteroid??) young k is a huuuge fan of vocals going through a high-pass filter, those kind of tape-y vocals, he always has them in his song, it's even there in "warning" by day6 and i'm 80% sure that was also his creative decision. the chorus melody sounds so familiar, but is so catchy. props to him for being able to do that "i don't know where i've heard this song before but i love it" thing as we hear this song literally for the first time. that's smart artistry. smartistry, if i may. the bridge nearly did hit me like that asteor in the video, girl, i almost passed away, had he not transitioned into the chorus, saving me. i love a man who keeps his word.

video - him singing this to plants(extremely earthly beings) and telling them that he'll hold them and save them right before this earth-destroying meteor crashes into our planet?? i'm here for it. his outfit, makeup, guitar, everything was perfect. not many notes on the video, i was too engrossed in the song :p

i've been away, but i'll be damned if i love him any less than i did years ago. if you're reading this, younghyun, by some weird twist of fate then i want to say that i am so proud of you. it takes so much to make an album, and you did it. you made it happen, and i can't wait to hear it all.

96. “i ask people to call me young k bc as young k, i can make up for the inadequacies of brian. brian is weak.” this is why i often stick to young k now. yeah it’s fun to joke around but maybe he dOES feel more emotionally and mentally adequate as young k. maybe he feels more empowered or stronger and i don’t want to invalidate that. it takes courage to say what he said in front of a crowd.

97. just the stuff he’s gone through and how strong he is. he’s overcome so much. brave and powerful.

98. the fact that he doesn’t ever fake it with his lyrics, he remains true to his music and so does the rest of day6. stan day6.

99. he’s so interactive with fans and always wants to see us happy. you could say your fav idol does that too but this really IS why i love younghyun

100. the final reason is just because he lives. he lives despite all the obstacles that were probably thrown at him, and i respect and adore that. the way he makes us feel a little less lonely with words that he’s penned out of his own sorrow. the selflessness. i am lucky to listen to songs he has written and day6 has sung. he’s a beautiful human who deserves all ALL the love :’)

Reblogging this because emo hours and countdown to comeback

so i was just watching the seokyeong university performance fancam of iKON performing bling bling and b-day and i had this emo moment(lasting for the duration of the fancam lmao) that they’ve come so far. it’s taken korea SO long to recognise what they’re capable of and how they can get a whole nation(and a few others) to groove to tHEIR songs. bling bling and b-day that didn’t even get their fill on the charts had the students losing thEIR CONSCIOUS SHIT at the live performance. everyone wanted to see and applaud and appreciate these seven men who, despite their shitty boss, managed to secure the k in ikon EVEN after spending most of their stardom in a whole different country and not being able to promote in their HOME FRIKKIN LAND as much as they’d have wanted to. 

i am inspired everyday by their journey. and i hope the joy that return era has given so many non-ikonics continues for a very very long time.
