the first few races were honest -- jet didn't need them to be rigged to weed out the competition, all those high-dreaming wannabe randos, desperate for a chance to win. who did they think they were, trying to compare themselves to him?

but sonic... he's already making trouble. for an amateur, he shouldn't be getting as close to the finish line as he is. hell, jet saw the guy's first time on an air board. nobody's supposed to be that good without years of practice. and if he makes it all the way to the finals and screws everything up --

no. jet will just have to ensure that doesn't happen. for his family. for the syndicate. for his father.

been watching the riders cutscenes and talking to merlin so i've got lots of ex gear thots:

i think there’s two side to extreme gear as a sport – the legitimate matches and a criminal underground

extreme gear as a recognized, legitimate sport is extremely unregulated. basically anyone who has their own board and can pay the entrance fee is allowed to compete

there’s no requirements on board specs ( although you’ll want to pay attention to the type of track you’re going to be on to make sure your board can handle it ), the age to enter is probably comically low ( i wanna say 12 or 13, since jet is supposed to be 14 in riders and he’s clearly experienced ), there’s no single set route for racers to take ( speed vs technique vs power ), and once you’re in the race it’s no holds barred

it seems almost encouraged for racers to ram into each other / make contact, which is insane when you think about how risky most of these tracks are

i also think that cheating by tampering with other contestant’s gear is a normal occurrence – which is where we get into the criminal underground side

there’s a huge network of betting associated with ex gear matches, both in random and rigged races. in races where the outcome has been pre-determined, any method to ensure the outcome is acceptable, including brutal force, gear tampering, and ganging up on racers

the money exchanged through these races is mind-boggling, and an easy way for shady companies to hide / transfer money without raising any red flags. the babylon rogues as racers and thieves are the face of this criminal circuit, but jet’s dad is the real heart of the operation, pulling strings from all angles and ensuring that he, his family, and those loyal to them always end up on top

in non-legitimate races, the stakes are even higher and the tracks and competitors are even more dangerous. think of it like underground boxing / fighting rings. these matches are absolutely used as power plays, to prove the might of one dominating faction over another, or even to challenge power and destroy the reputation of someone in order to take that power for themselves

jet’s role in this is very much a figurehead – he’s the face of the rogues of this generation but he’s been groomed to take on this role his entire life. what he’s doing now, racing and thieving, is what his father did before him, and his father before that ( i think in the first riders game it said something about thirteen generations of rogues??? insane to me ). and he knows that he’s expected to one day take over, to be in charge of the entire operation and teach his own son how to rule the wind and be the face of this venture

is he sure he’s ready for that? or will ever be ready for that? that’s a question for another post....
