LINK HAS A ... UNIQUE ... PERSPECTIVE on socioeconomics, if only because - while class divides no longer exist in post!Calamity Hyrule - he once lived a life that has gained him insight into both sides .

LINK WAS BORN IN Hateno, a small farming village. One on the outskirts of Hyrule, no less. As you can imagine, core values of hard work and integrity are hardwired into him. All the same, within Hateno Village, Link's family was undoubtably modest, but certainly well off. His father was a knight, and while I don't believe he was especially high ranking, that kind of profession is absolutely highly valued in the kingdom as honorable work. (I imagine the home he buys in BOTW was once his childhood own, built up over the past couple generations of hateno homesteaders in his family.) SO , WITHIN HATENO , his family was higher up the socioeconomic chain as it were. And yet, in a village like Hateno, there would only barely be much of a difference. And that difference came in what you could give back to the community. The merchants with their wares, the farmers with their crops, the mayors with their leadership, and the warriors with protection. They lean on each other to survive — and more than that: to prosper.

AT LINK'S CORE: he was taught from a young age that you can give back so much more to your community when you have more to give. It doesn't matter if that gift is in wealth or in might.

If you CAN do good for other people, you have a MORAL OBLIGATION to do so. It is not a choice. It's a responsibility.

ALL THIS TO SAY THAT: baseline, Link does not resent the wealthy for their wealth — so long as it was earned fairly, and so long as its power is used wisely. LINK DOES NOT TOLERATE BULLIES AND CHEATS. He does not care who they are or where they are from.

FAST-FORWARD, THEN, TO the young boy who before he was a knight, was a squire. And he happened to be not only the youngest of squires, but the youngest amongst the sons of noble men. Link did his utmost anyways. But truth is truth: CITY LIFE IS NOT THE SAME AS IT IS ON THE KINGDOM OUTSKIRTS. His education was different. His presentation was different. Even things that are so small — like accents and learned skills and whether or not you could afford equipment, or the difference between spices being a delicacy or a table decoration — these TINY THINGS suddenly don't seem so tiny. And Link was already very small.

LINK WAS SPRINTING IN A MARATHON RACE. TO CATCH UP AND KEEP UP.

BUT HE KNEW WHAT he was good at. And he knew what he could give. It just so happened that his best outclassed his peers in more ways than one. He gained just as many friends as he would have gained envious rivals and enemies.

FAST-FORWARD NOT SO FAR to becoming a knight, or further still, to becoming a captain of the imperial guard. Four years isn't long, but it is long enough to fully understand the rules and the red ropes that divided him from his peers. There were LINES THAT CAN'T BE CROSSED, and needs to be met. As The Hero, a Knight, a Captain, and even simply a Hylian, it was always his obligation to respect those bounds. IT WAS HIS DUTY. Something that was never shaken out of place. Simply MOLDED AND REDEFINED, time after time.

KINGDOM HEARTS 358/2 DAYS / @mischiefmodig / ACCEPTING !

“   finding out the truth doesn’t always work out for the best .   ”

HIS LEG STILL ACHED with the phantom of pain . as link's fingers curled around the stiff of his brace to adjust it , the coarse fibers of the open - faced velcro scratched and stung . but it was something to center on . something to ANCHOR HIMSELF TO HIS BODY WITH . link looked to the blades of grass beneath their feet . leaned back and felt the bite of tree bark through his tunic . the heat of the summer sun nipped at his fingertips . he could see the world . he could feel it . ( and it had to mean something — HE WAS HERE / HE WAS REAL . maybe that was enough for today . )

BLUE GAZE SHIFTED UP to loki . another wave of lethargy slowed the boy's movements as he offered a tilt of his head . a single - shouldered shrug . ❝ maybe . ❞ maybe whatever loki was GETTING AT WAS RIGHT , but —

LINK GAVE PAUSE . ( but this is worse . ) ❝ . . . i think i know about the worst of it already . i'm not scared to remember THE CALAMITY . i just . . . it's not the same . being told how i'm supposed to have fit into any of it . ❞

WITH EARS PINNED BACK , link fumbled with a may flower bead . he was having TROUBLE getting the string through the center-most hole , having wet the cord's end with water , and having bent it against the charm's middle , top , and sides . eventually , he was able to pull it through ! — but the satisfied note that reverberated through his chest was . . . SHORT LIVED .

AFTER ALL , LINK STILL had a quite a few more beads to go before this could be considered truly finished .

DESTINIES INTERTWINED , HUH . . . ? recognition sparked . followed soon after by the burning coil of knowing something . something about that sentiment felt . . . hm . . . link wedged the point of his tooth into his tongue . scanning the crowd for the path of least resistance , he led the way forward towards the produce .

❝ that's really sweet , sora . y'know , you don't talk about it much - we always get caught up in things going on around here - but . . . i like hearing about your home . ❞ he reached for the kid's shoulder as a cluster of people passed by their route . ( it wouldn't do to become separated . ) as he did , link beamed . warmly enough to brighten the whole room .

. . . HE JOSTLED SORA'S shoulder not long thereafter .

❝ SO ? did you have someone in mind ? or are you trying to see if the seeds will take here ? ❞ it wasn't awfully unfounded . if they found a lot of the fruit , maybe they could find enough to experiment and see what helped it grow again .

"I mean- It's-"

Sora paused for a second. He started to rise from the table after Link. A small chuckle escaped him as he shook his head gently to Link's quip. "It's called a Paupu fruit... It's shaped like a star and it's special to the culture of where I'm from."

Sora glanced around at the various stalls, allowing Link to lead the way as he was more well versed in these types of places.

"If two people share one, their destinies become intertwined. They'll remain a part of each other's lives no matter what."

Another pause as he glanced back to Link. A hint of pink crept onto his cheeks.

"It's- It can be a romantic thing or a friend thing, but- either way, no matter what happens, the two who share it will always be with each other" Sora gently placed his hand over his chest. "In here..."

LINK LET LOOSE AN affirming hum and nodded . there would be no resistance from link when it came to the food market . indulging in perusing the sheer amount of ingredients across the tent had thus far been one of the BETTER PARTS of the day's window shopping . there had been an entire storefront dedicated to sugar and spices ! so perhaps link had purchased some , gathering the satchels into his bag — spurred in no small part by the whisper of a far - away memory . ( IMPRESSION OF HEAT seeping through his soles as he trotted along a cobblestone road . hand - in - hand with . . . someone . gawking at the blue - roofed spice exchange of castle town . asking questions . SO many questions . . . but he'd never seen so many spices before all in one place , and sugar cubes had been a NOVELTY , not a kitchen staple . )

STIRRING FROM HIS THOUGHTS , link arced a brow and peered at sora over the slate .

❝ the triplets may have a lot of things rattling around in their shop but taste isn't one of them . ❞ he replied . ❝ besides . i'm hoping that maybe if i go looking for something from hyrule — i don't know . maybe i'd recognize it a little . that works sometimes . ❞

HE PAUSED AND slowly lifted himself from the table , careful not to put too much weight on his bad side . ❝ what're you trying to find , though ? ❞

The crinkling of paper could be heard as Sora balled up the wrapper of his sandwich and stuck it in his oversized thigh pocket. He was certainly hungry today! The wrap he ordered disappeared faster than Donald's mana! From the other pocket, he pulled out an orange and started to peel it. His head twisted slightly to listen to the boy in blue.

He nodded as a quick huff of amusement escaped through his nose.

"I wouldn't mind! But I'd like to keep looking around the market! There's something I'm looking for!"

Sora continued ahead ever so slightly so that Link could follow. Eyes darted left and right through various stalls of food, drink, and spices, but he glanced back toward his friend as he pushed a slice of orange into his mouth.

"Also- if you carry a lot of antiques, wouldn't you want to avoid going to the antique store? Doesn't really help with the teasing now, does it?"
