God what i wouldn't give to have the sheer stamina and work ethic of my next door neighbor. Please Answer Carefully took about 12 hours to create, from initial idea to finished release. It is by far my shortest and most successful game.

As with many of my game ideas, inspiration for it struck abruptly and unannounced. I had been recovering from major surgery for weeks and had just started to be capable of sitting upright. During a lapse into exhaustion, I laid my head down on my desk and dreamt a nightmare about a survey gone wrong… and then woke up and scribbled down all the questions I could remember, pretty much exactly as they appear in the game.

I create a lot of surveys at work, so the nightmare was probably guilt about not working enough during my recovery. In fact, there’s a shout-out to my work in the game’s visual design – the red used for the next-page button is the same red used in my university’s default survey theme.

Fun fact: The bitch that took the longest to create was the silly slider bar asking how many hours per week you spend online. Utterly pointless, almost got cut after an hour of snarling at the CSS to work, is still glitchy, but it’s there!

Another fun fact: I didn’t create the first jump-scare of the game. The visual glitch on Question 5 is a genuine glitch caused by the game’s custom transitions. What would have been an aggravating bug in another game turned out to be a serendipitous angel in this one.

Spoiler: The game has only one ending. Early feedback about the game criticized this, to the point that I wavered in my game design convictions and had to ask my girlfriend whether I should cave to critique and add a second ending. Her wise response was absolutely not, and the game remains as is.

For me, excellent horror experiences are most often rooted in helplessness. To offer a ‘victory’ ending, an escape from the omnipotent stalker, would dilute the dread and helplessness of the game too much.

That being said, I’ve taken the feedback to heart – and my next horror game will have two endings. ;)

Some time after its release, a brilliantly kind soul offered to translate the game into Italian for free. I’m elated to say that you can now play Please Answer Carefully in five languages – English, Italian, Spanish, Polish, and Turkish.

Okay I played a lot of heaven’s vault, almost done with my third play through, some thoughts:

This was my first time not learning the name of the withering palace before going there, so now in my map it’s listed as “execution site” and this was also my first time finding that GIANT UNDERGROUND CAVERN that Aliya is too scared to explore

I chose to vault last game, and even though I already knew Aliya was mazwai, the way I LOST it when I saw Aliya was not Aliya Mazwai and the book huang is always reading was by Elasra instead.. smhhhh

This is also my first time I think I’ll actually be able to bring the history of lost futures to huang so he can look at it, because during my previous games myari had already shut down Iox. This time I have carefully refused to speak to her.

And it like finally occurred to me that the steel empire… it might not be that the robots had a slave uprising and took over… maybe they were being ruled by robots with the minds of dead emperors? (Last game I finally unlocked Enkei)

Anyways the history of lost futures keeps being slightly different in ways that don’t seem to be the translations becoming more complex, the subject matter just appears DIFFERENT in places. So I’m excited to see how huang can assist.
