Join me as I recount my amazing interview with the one and only Motown legend, Michael Jackson, better known as Offty (@mikeyjayy21), as we talk about music, life, and going through the motions of the entertainment industry. It’s here on OWN that Michael addresses his Grammy snub and the rumors of a prospective new album in the works. Read on for more.
With your last release, Off the Wall, you got a lot of praise from critics like Rolling Stone calling it "a slick, sophisticated R&B-pop showcase". I'm sure your fans would like to know: how did the album come to be?
Well, I've always wanted to sorta, do my own thing. I very strongly believe that's important for a person. To work and perfect their craft, but also never forgetting your foundation. While I was filming The Wiz, Quincy [Jones] and I really got to know each other, so I called him up one day and explained to him about everything that I was wanting to do. I said "Quincy, I'm ready to do an album, a solo album and I want a real good producer! Would you recommend somebody?" I wasn't trying to hint at him or anything like that but he offered! He goes "Smelly!" That's what he calls me. And ah he says, "Why don't you let me do it?!" And I told him it was a great idea! Wonderful idea, actually.
So I'm guessing the album production took place around 1978?
Mhm, yes. Late 78'.
When I announced this interview I received a few letters from fans who were wondering what exactly “off the wall” means. Care to elaborate?
I love that, I've never been asked this before! Well, “Off The Wall” is the title track. And the song explains it all. Simply, it's all about life, enjoying life. Not being too worried or stressed about things. You know, we tend to do that sometime. Get loose! And groove, enjoy! Live your life off the wall. Cause at the end, nobody wants to be remembering the bad times, only the good. Right?
Right! So the title track is about feeling good and doing what makes you happy. I really like that Michael. So, I hate to go there, but it was another in-demand question I received - How did you feel about the alleged Grammy snub for OTW?
Thank you. And to answer your question, honestly.. A bit disappointed BUT determined. With things like that, I believe you just have to push and come back even better, be the greatest. And that's what I am going to do.
So you're saying you're going to come back even harder with another project?
I'll just say, I've got a plan. Some ideas.. but you all will just have to wait and see.
Fair enough! But I've gotta poke around with just one more question: is this new project already in the works?
No, no quite. I've been jotting down some things but as far as recording? No, not at the moment. After the [Triumph] tour is done, I'll be able to focus on my own work a bit more. So sometime next year for sure.
The tour! Triumph, right? How's that coming along?
It hasn't. We've got a few states in mind but nothing is set in stone as of yet. We're pushing to begin during the summer, at least by early July.
So are all of the Jackson brothers going to be part of this tour?
It'll just be Jackie, Marlon, Tito, Randy and myself.
Good to hear. So you've been in the business for over ten years. The deadline pressures, screaming fans, promotion obligations - do you ever tire of that?
Do I ever grow tired... Mm.. No, no. Of course there are days that I get physically tired, but overall? No way, no way. I love what I do, and I owe it to the fans. I owe them everything. Without them, there wouldn't be me, there wouldn't be any Jackson Five, nothing. I just simply love what I do.
Michael, who would you say is your number one hero?
My hero? Well there are so many people that I look up to, admire. I suppose they could be called my heroes. There is Berry Gordy, Fred Astaire, Walt Disney, James Brown, Charlie Chaplin, Diana Ross.. Just to name a few. All of those people, they hold a very special place in my heart. They've all inspired me, in more ways than one.
Speaking of Fred Astaire, didn't you meet him a few years ago?
I did! I sure did. Gee, I tell ya it was a wonderful experience. A day I'll never forget.
I bet! I met Fred Astaire once or twice and it was really such an amazing pleasure. I'd love to interview him some day! I'm sure he has some interesting stories to tell about early Hollywood.
You should! And I'm sure he does! That'll be something I'd tune in for, honestly.
Now Michael, I know this question is a bit cliche, but where do you see yourself in 10 years?
Where do I see myself in 10 years? Hm, I'd see myself still performing of course, all over the world. I'd love to do films, get into acting a bit more. And I'd also love to have my own organization, to give back ya know? Help those in need. Especially the children. That's real important to me.
For now, until the next album, is there anything you'd like to say to your fans?
I'd like to say, thank you. Thank you for the love and support, it means much more to me than they'll ever know. And everything will be worth the wait, they can count on that.

I want a couple that would leave everyone shook because they never thought they would never get together. A couple that everyone respects and admires, doesn't have one bad thing to say about them.
A power couple. I haven’t seen one of those kinds of couples around these parts in God knows how long, but I would absolutely love that. Do you remember Sensy and Lisa? They were the supreme couple for years until they broke it off with one another. No one ever gossiped about them or had bad things to say until the end, and even the the sourness was internal.

So who do you have lined up to interview right now?
I have a potential interview coming up with Chris Brown, Beyonce, about three Michael Jackson clones, and one or two others who haven’t quite been confirmed yet.

Who do think should become a couple on there?
Personally? I think Naomi Campbell and Tupac should hook up. That relationship would be EXPLOSIVE and good for ratings. Who do you think should get together?
