lighter and princess gown (novel) by twentine SPOILERS AHEAD
so, bcs I'm obviously deprived of l&p contents I decided to read the original novel which still doesn't have an official english translation yet (the one I found stopped translating at ch 36 years ago), so i just used google translate from the original book in chinese (which was a mess bcs of that, but I was that desperate). twentine's book itself is exceptional. although my interpretation might be wrong because of the translation, I got the gist and found major differences from the show, so if you've read the book and you're fluent or native in chinese, please cmiiw.
read ahead if u don't mind spoilers:
1. the show romanticised li xun's character so much more than the original li xun from the book. (STOP READING HERE IF U WANNA KEEP HIS IMAGE FROM THE SHOW). if u think li xun in the show was cold as a fridge, he's the whole antartica continent in the novel. and he didn't treat zhu yun nicely, he was actually rather harsh to her not only verbally, but also physically (he tend to pinch her neck and waist and intimidate her in a way that made me uncomfortable)
2. the book tried to justify his character through his family upbringing, which was much more unfortunate and miserable than in the show. he was a bastard child and was bullied, basically was a puching bag of the family, esp. his step brothers. his dad was a total dick. other than his miserable, dying birth mother, li lan (his step-sis) was the only one who treated him like a human.
3. he was sexist and he literally laughed while telling people that he only like chicks with IQ lower than 60. he fooled around those women a lot. it's probably to brought up that zhu yun was the antithesis, but I dunno. it still doesn't sit right with me how he derogate women.
3. his titular lighter name was actually not bcs he had an emotional attachment to his father's lighter, but rather bcs he's a heavy smoker thus he brought a lighter with him everywhere he goes. (zhu yun was a smoker as well bcs of her trauma regarding xiaoyan, fang zhi jing, and her mom)
4. until the end, he never got zhu yun's parents' approval (and it's not bcs he cheated on exams like in the show, zhu yun's mother was just judgmental af for no actual reason at all - before li xun proved her 'right' by going to prison)
5. they did the deeds right after the confession.
6. fang zhi jing was the main villain until the end, gao jianhong just wasn't as significant as in the show.
7. they had 3 kids, and although it's not shown, it's implied that his character indeed became warmer over time.
#lighter and princess#li xun x zhu yun#lighter and princess gown#again#it's my interpretation from bad translation#i'd really like to read it again if the official translation come out#so#correct me if i'm wrong

I'm convinced the titular lighter is zhu yun as she warms and lights up li xun's world, li xun is definitely the princess with how zhu yun pampers him like one

Oh I’m sorry but “Your daughter can change the world but you want her to do what she’s told “ is one of the greatest lines a male lead in a cdrama has ever said to his mother in law.

I'm boarding on the theloise ship but this needs to be said: them being endgame is too far-fetched.
I don't read eloise's book but I saw enough people pointed out how horrible philip crane was, and theloise is just adorable so it always has been an easy choice for me.
jq implied that she doesn't have much to do with the show in interviews and it's become one biggest hope for theloise shippers, that the producers will change eloise's storyline. they also promoted theloise quite much on their official bridgerton page, so that means theo will be a much more significant character than sienna (they don't give her and anthony much publicity). but let's be realistic, bridgertons consists of 8 independent books, each book for each sibling. eloise is supposed to have her own season, her story is in the 5th book and it looks like the show is following the books main story with a few insignificant changes here and there.
it looks like theo is coming back in s3, so I think we'll still get our theloise dose (hopefully in every season preceding eloise's own), but I don't think they'll be endgame. theo is important for eloise's character arc, but that's it.

I can already picture that if Theo makes it to s3, they're going to ruin his character just for Eloise to be with Sir Philip, and most probably ✨polish✨ Philip's character to win our favors.

one of my favorite things about asian movies (and asian media in general) is the care taken when there’s food. like you can tell love was put in those shots. it’s not even fancy food a lot of the time, just normal people making food, because of the way the audience is assumed to understand that food, and making food, is an act of love, is a love language. how often food is used as a tool to convey a message, to symbolize something, rather than just part of the set, i think, is so satisfying especially because the actors themselves interact with it differently.

vincenzo lectured han seo that the best source of protection is your brain, not a gun, and then proceeded to walk into han seok’s trap without either

Something that occurred to me while watching the hostage scene was that when Hanseo went at his brother with the hockey stick, it would have been WAY more effective if Vincenzo had actually gone over to help Hanseo fight him. Instead of trying to free Chayoung and take advantage of the distraction to walk away with her. I get that he loves her, but I feel like leaving Hanseo like that is the kind of thing ppl do when their enemies fight each other and give them a distraction, rather than your ALLY and DONGSAENG who loves and admires you with all his heart being brave and putting himself in harm's way for you and your girlfriend.
If Vincenzo had just gone over to help Hanseo fight Hanseok, then I honestly think they could have disarmed him, gotten the gun away, and knocked him out. And maybe then Hanseo might have a chance to shoot his brother with the gun, if he wanted to. This way, you could save Chayoung, Hanseo, and yourself!! It would be so much less likely that anyone would get shot like this. Why would you not do this??
Also, Vincenzo MUST KNOW Hanseo isn't some martial artist who could easily fend off his brother. So why would you just leave him to fight alone? How many seconds would that be able to buy anyway? You are super good at fighting so shouldn't you have gone over, taken advantage of the distraction by bonking Hanseok in the head and stealing his gun away??
I just don't understand, it seemed like such an irrational choice? As if the writers just wanted to have Hanseo die in a self-sacrificing way and they just had to find SOME way of making that happen, so they ended up writing an irrational scene.

Disclaimer: this is just my personal opinion and I'm totally open to hearing other people's.
I was really looking forward to today's episode, but all in all, I'm kind of underwhelmed, ngl.
There were some really cute chayenzo scenes that I thoroughly enjoyed and the tenants getting to shine was quite lovely.
But the trend of Chayoung not getting what she deserves continues and now there's just one episode left to fix that. I was hoping she would kick-ass in the courtroom, but literally all she did was introduce Vincenzo as the witness and let him take it from there. The much needed conversation about the impact all of this had on her and where she stood ended up being "it was difficult, but I knew it was the right thing to do" and that's it, and it's not given the same treatment as when they first discussed whether Vincenzo has killed people before (lighting, context, dialogue, etc.).
Then she was stereotypically kidnapped to be used against him. I was particularly miffed at the "Don't you know how much I love you, it makes me human" thing, because no. That's such a lazy way to justify why Chayoung wasn't kidnapped sooner when this would clearly have been the more strategic thing to do. I swear, Han Seok is sometimes written so so well (the office scene) and Ok Taecyeon is definitely more than living up to the role, but other times it feels like he is whatever the writers want him to be in this specific moment. Way more a device than a person. Plus, he was taken down so thoroughly as a "spoiled brat and nothing more" and Vincenzo is such a ridiculously over-powered protagonist that the end scene just... didn't make sense to me. It felt like there were so many things he could have done other than what he ended up doing.
A lot of people are also saying Vincenzo didn't really abandon Han Seo because he turned around when he heard the gunshot, and I can see where they're coming form but why did he need to turn around in the first place?
Cha-young wasn't hurt or wounded, he could've just told her to run or pushed her down or something and then went to help the man with the bullet in his shoulder fight off his clearly unhinged brother. It would even have been the better thing to do strategically speaking. The door is so far away and Han Seo is injured fighting an armed Han Seok, but they were still walking out the door.
Turning around when you hear a gunshot from behind is what anyone would do for self preservation purposes regardless of who else is in the room. You can't not turn around.
But what if there hadn't been a gunshot? Would he not have turned around then?
Again, I have no problem with Vincenzo having one (1) priority and that priority being Chayoung. He's entitled to that. It just doesn't fit with the "Vinny-hyung" narrative.
I really love the show and all of its characters (and I definitely love you guys and really don't want to rain on your parade), but the way such a powerful episode went about wrapping things up in such a way felt really unsatisfying.

my takeaway from this is either love truly makes you stupid or writers like to use the excuse of love makes you stupid to fabricate some unneeded drama
there was absolutely no reason that vincenzo couldn't have taken out the guards without hanseok noticing and walk in with a weapon. or to not use distraction hanseo created by swinging the hockey stick at hanseok to disarm him. instead you want to make me believe that a mobster who has been in countless gun fights, sees on one hand a trigger-happy man with a loaded gun and on the other hand an unharmed chayong and decides that freeing her from her bonds takes priority over helping hanseo out who is in immediate danger of getting shot :/
but everything for the drama and an angsty hospital scene, i guess?
#THIS#bitter is an understatement#at this point i don't even care about chayenzo endgame#big sigh#big sigh again

unpopular opinion, but the whole cha young getting shot at to protect vincenzo while vincenzo could have had helped han seo finish han seok is just cliché and disappointing. where do the quick witted mafia/consigliere and lawyer gone to? that's way too ooc for them they freaking left han seo to his own demise when he sacrificed himself for them, even if vincenzo decided to come back after getting cha young somewhere safe (like, the cha young we know wouldn't even allow herself to be escorted without delivering her kicks).
I mean, she defended mi ri when she didn't even know how to fight properly. and don't even get me started on vincenzo. like he said, a smart person knows when his opponent is weak, and that was obviously when han seo attacked han seok. they f had the f upper hand.
#big sigh#TOP TEN KDRAMA BETRAYAL#park jae bum better make it up in the next ep finale#vincenzo#hong cha young

I was wondering whose hand vincenzo's holding in the preview. we don't want anyone else to die but I guess it's inevitable. would've been too unrealistic if everyone comes out alive from the cassano squad

Mr lee is going to die. When he asks Vincenzo to be his bodyguard his wife says with something happens to you what about the baby,he says the baby will be proud of me. Her clutching her stomach in the preview. I am very scared.
