Dear So-and-so,
Lately i've felt like we've been... out of touch. Even when we're together, it feels sort of distant. I touch you and kiss you and hug you and to no avail. I always read that people like to be touched. It makes people feel a lot closer, apparently. If so, then why doesn't it seem to work in this case? You're soooo stressed, and I understand that. I want to help. So badly. I always like to think that when you're with me, you forgot your troubles and just sort of let go and enjoy our time together. We do only have a month or so, really. I also know that that is probably easier said than done but... I don't know. I hate feeling distant and well, separate. It's scary. I love you.

Honestly...
I'm really enjoying running and exercising. I kind of went into it with very low hopes, but everything turned out so much better than expected. Every time before I leave to go out for a run, I'm dreading it and every time, I end up being so happy that I did it. I feel awesome. It's helping me to make better choices about diet and such. I really am glad I finally decided to do this. I feel better already and it's only been two days. I feel more positive. I really needed to release some endorphins, apparently.
I feel sore already, and I love it. I love feeling winded when i'm done, I love drinking boatloads of water before, during, and after exercising and I love being able to just go do it whenever I please. I'm so happy! Aughhh, yay!
I really want to stick to this. It feels so good.

The following day, I attended a workshop about preventing gender violence, facilitated by Katz. There, he posed a question to all of the men in the room: “Men, what things do you do to protect yourself from being raped or sexually assaulted?” Not one man, including myself, could quickly answer the question. Finally, one man raised his hand and said, “Nothing.” Then Katz asked the women, “What things do you do to protect yourself from being raped or sexually assaulted?” Nearly all of the women in the room raised their hand. One by one, each woman testified: “I don’t make eye contact with men when I walk down the street,” said one. “I don’t put my drink down at parties,” said another. “I use the buddy system when I go to parties.” “I cross the street when I see a group of guys walking in my direction.” “I use my keys as a potential weapon.” The women went on for several minutes, until their side of the blackboard was completely filled with responses. The men’s side of the blackboard was blank. I was stunned. I had never heard a group of women say these things before. I thought about all of the women in my life — including my mother, sister and girlfriend — and realized that I had a lot to learn about gender.

The morbidity of seeing hundreds of bodies along one’s ascent up Mount Everest is only trumped by the fascination of the levels of preservation of many of the bodies.  The temperatures are ideal for long-term preservation, and perhaps some of these corpses will serve as studies for generations thousands of years from now.
