The redraw of dgrayman 235-245 for @dgm-fanprojects ‘s iconic moments zine. I did the same iconic moment last year.

so I didn’t even put my social media on this one because I didn’t really like it. The initial idea was to have a more interesting composition, but then 1. It cooked too much in my head and 2. I went through some personal stuff in the middle and ran out of time, so things ended up getting cut.

I actually wanted Maria hugging and stopping cross, but alas im bad with human figures :( road also ended up getting cut :(

The overall scene also ended up being too busy because the composition itself wasn’t interesting enough imo.

Happy 21st Anniversary D.Gray-Man!

Here is a project made by fans for the 21th anniversary of D.Gray-Man. It is viewable for free and can't be downloaded and sold in any way. 68 contributors participate in this project, resulting in 57 illustrations of Iconic Moments and 60 chronological doodles of little moments.

This fanbook has no affiliation with the official DGM in any way. The contributors claim no ownership or right to the DGM work, which is the sole property of Katsura Hoshino and Shūeisha. Each artist is the owner of and responsible for their art. Reposting any of the artwork is strictly forbidden without direct permission from the artist who made it.

We hope that our work will prompt new and old readers to take interest into D.Gray-Man. Please buy the manga to support the author!

I really like doing lineart, and unfortunately a lot of it is cut out in the final rendition… so I will force y’all to see it >:)

This is my first time intentionally trying to add more colors than just flatly coloring things + adding gold/blue for shadows, so you see hints of green and purple on Allen’s hair. It was really fun! But also I redid the coloring three times lol. If I have this much patience for coding, maybe I wouldn’t be struggling at work…

I saw some theories that clown crown is bookman jr, and I 100% dig that interpretation.

I wasn’t sure how Allen should be holding the mask so I went through 3 hours of trying different hand positions :’) I did 5 different ones and they all kept coming out not graceful looking.

D.GRAY-MAN POP UP SHOP IN SHINJUKU (August 2024)

A special D.Gray-man pop-up store will be held in Shinjuku, Tokyo, from August, 9th to August 25th.

The four first days (9-12), the admission will be only through a lottery system. You can already apply to the lottery system and the results will be out in July (you can ask for my help if you need to apply!)

There will be exclusive goodies ! The goodies list is already available on the website. There are cards, stickers, T-shirts and sweatshirts, etc.

There will also be a special lottery: each time you buy 3000 yen of goodies, you'll get to try the lottery. The prizes are already available to see on the website.

You will also be able to see the new key-holder plushies samples. The plushies will be available later on an online shop.

And at last, there will be a special Lavi Birthday event! A board will be in the shop, and you will be able to write small messages to Lavi!

For the moment, we do not know if there will be an online shop for the goodies. But since the plushies will be sold online, I guess there will be one! Let's hope

My newest shipment just arrived so let’s talk about some (recent) lottery-only items! The picture above is from the most recent d.grayman playing card drawing, which you could’ve entered by subbing to zebrack comics.

They’re really pretty! I don’t know if it was worth $350 dollars though. There’s only 2 types of illustrations plus the card back and spades,

Funny thing about the prices — I’m pretty sure I’m the reason why the floor for this is 350 on mercari. When the drawing results come out, several people started selling the cards on mercari. I knew I wanted something that’s super exclusive like this, so I started paying attention. There were three sellers in particular competition against each other. over a span of around 2-3 days, the price dropped from ~100k yen down to 59k yen. Keep in mind that these drops were mostly happening while I was asleep being on the east coast. My ideal price would’ve been around 200 usd or ~30k yen, but I’m willing to pay more. Right before going to bed, I saw that the price has fallen to below 60k, and said screw it. Next morning, I woke up, and the main price competitor’s cards were also sold, and a few days later the third person, with a slightly higher price, also ended up selling. Since the price decreases happen primarily while I was asleep, and I knew that as soon as one sells, the other is going to get bought up too, might as well pay a little extra. I’m also 99% sure that at least 2/3 of the other sets on mercari was bought by chinese people, since I see their posts on chinese social media.

To be honest though, if I knew that there’s only two new drawings on these cards, I probably would’ve waited a bit longer before buying them. Oh well.

The other lottery item I had is from the vol 28 drawing.

They’re B5 sized manuscript replicas. They’re stunning — you can see so many details on these. Every stroke on neah/mana’s hair is clear as day. I’d like to frame them but *screams in nyc and paper walls*.

The other drawing item is a acrylic board of the vol 28 cover.

I’m still debating on buying that off of mercari. I think I will once the yen drops a little more, but we’ll see. I wouldn’t lose sleep over not getting it.

As a side note unrelated to dgm: the reason why I’m buying so much recently is 1. I realized that a few thousand literally makes no difference to me and my house owning goals (I LOVE NYC) and 2. The yen is incredibly cheap right now. Even though some Japanese collectors are price gauging, some of the items are not too much more expense than their originals price (there’s a few absurd outliers, which I’ll covered in two months… because I paid for some of the outliers and now they have to be shipped from China).

The Japanese fed has spent billions on trying to stabilize the currency, but to no avail. it’s really bad for any Japanese companies doing import, but it’s really really good for usd based consumers. As long as the US federal reserve and their interest rate remains high (and a bunch of other factors), yen is going to continue getting crushed against the dollar. There’s some items I’m eyeing on that I’ll probably only buy if the yen drops to at least 1:160 against the dollar. If you zoom into the last month of usd:yen, you can literally see when the Japanese fed intervened.

I bought wayyyy too much merch recently. I realized that I now make enough to buy basically whatever (dgm) merch I want, so maybe it’s time to start a little series on the things you can buy and some info about them.

I don’t plan on collecting every piece of dgm merch — badges, paper trading cards cups, tshirts, and larger canvas arts don’t interest me much, and whilst I want to buy some of the original art replicas, I don’t have space to store them (yay for living near nyc). As such, I probably wouldn’t cover them much or at all. I will also only cover more recent merch as they’re easier to come by. This post will just be a little preview about things.

Almost all of my merch comes from mercari, there’s also a decent amount coming soon from the Chinese equivalent of mercari (the shipping is significantly cheaper but also takes significantly longer). The Chinese and Japanese side of the fandom can get fanatical about their merch, but I don’t hear about it as much in the US.

Most dgm merch is from the original art exhibition. There’s a few pieces selling for 10x their original value (I’m looking at you, Allen and neah acrylic board). They’re beautiful and very hard to come by at this point. I’ll go into details about them at some point.

Shueisha also sells merch directly, either in person at their stores or at jumpfest. Animate also sells dgm stuff every once in a while.

Then theres so stuff that got released with the anime.

There’s also some more exclusive items that only come from either attending an event in person or from lottery drawings. Those are the most expensive pieces. There’s a piece of plastic of Allen that’s being listed for about 1.2k usd. It’s not just listing price either — it has been sold for about 1k.

Also as plug I’m selling extra items I got here https://www.mercari.com/u/wingfril?sv=0. They’re basically the same as it took for me to buy them from Japan. Sadly there’s definitely some items that are more expensive to acquire than others just based off of how recent the artwork is and who the characters on it are.

Party Doodles is a section of the 20th Anniversary fan project were artists did one or more little doodles with a common theme of "Celebrating the 20th Anniversary". It was a way for the fans to give some love to favourite secondary characters that didn't get the chance to shine into the first volume or Iconic Moments.

So that non-artists could participate in this Zine too, we hid silly questions inbetween the doodles, just funny thoughts that crossed our minds while reading the manga. It is our hope those silly questions and funny doodles will prompt interactions and talk between fans so if you have headcanon about some of the silly questions, don't hesitate to comment/tag/reblog with it!

I might end up printing them as stickers for fun. If anyone’s in nyc or Chicago, I’ll give them to you for free (you’ll have to come to me). I’ll probably wait on printing them until we get an official color though.

I had no idea what the color of either characters could be, but given sensei said green is for Lucia, I pictured her having very green dresses. Then I looked at the Chinese fandom’s summary of the live, and they’re implying that Hoshino sensei is implying that the hair is green (yeahhh idk about this one). For bookman jr, they hair has to either be reddish or silver given Lucia’s comment in the latest chapter. The eyes should be green since lavi and bookman both seem to have green eyes. Anyways, given the unknowns, I just did both for both people.

I’ve never done a chibi drawing before (literally in my life). It’s so fast to do them! This is by far the shortest out of all the drawing I’ve done for this project. Procreate saids it’s about 8 hours (yes I’m very very slow). Page 112 (the purple early playing piano) took 32 hours, the iconic moment took 45 hours, and the pointalisim page (185) took 16.5 hours. Katerina doodle took 16.5 (for what ended up posting on tumblr) and 15 (for what’s in the zine). Another alma and kanda doodle took 11.5 hours.

Why is mana’s hair curly but also long???? But also not long enough??? It was pain drawing it lmao

I really need to work on human anatomy and perspectives :’) I went through like 3 or 4 different drafts for the body for mana because it just looked so wrong for all of them.

I spent like an hour drawing and arranging the strawberries seeds so I’m showing them here. They’re not even dots they’re actually rain dropped shaped and I had to orient them individually :’)

Look at this lol mana’s neck is just broken and neah just doesn’t have a neck. They’re not even at the same perspective. Sigh

My last page— an iconic moment for the red & mana arc, for @dgm20thproject

I got too excited about drawing red and mana and especially the apo guy that I completely forgot about cosimov and the ringmaster and the potion and ahhh so much. By the time I realized it was two days from the deadline and I had no will power to do so much drawing in ~1.5 days. This is also the first time I’ve drawn two characters interacting with each other!

I really wanted to have apocryo guy towering over everyone else and for him to look very unsettling. Maybe I succeeded too much..? He’s the one literally pulling the strings. And to contrast that with a very warm but sad hug between red and mana. Road and cross are looking behind both suit and red and mana because they’re both just observing the situation. Red’s arm is to the side because it important but what’s more important is the love that mana has for red 🥹

This is my favorite piece personally, but I think most people liked page 112 more :’)

Looking at it again in two month, I cannot get over how out of place the apo guy looks, so here’s some remixes and close ups (the canvas is 4.2k by 6.2k pixel lol) because the details got crunched

I’ve been wanting to do pointillism (and it’s very easy), but the first page I had would’ve been too boring with pointillism. I choose this page because I loved the first panels you the earl staring at the moon, but I felt like there wasn’t enough tying the panels together… so I added the moon :)

20 years and counting. A quiet, yet heartfelt thank you to Hoshino for this story that keeps us walking.

For the final page of volume 1, I was asked to completely rework the design. There were many, many moments of panic in the making of this as I struggled with the lettering, composition, colors.....orz....

So a huge thank you is due for all the critiques and words of encouragement I was blessed to receive during the process <3 I am so grateful to have been given the chance to work on this one!

My Iconic Moment for the D.Gray-man 20th Anniversary Zine ch. 219 (but also 220 and 221)

Those chapters are insane, and honestly I cannot believe no one else wanted them before I snatched it up! (Maybe because they are... a lot)

From the beginning of the zine, I really wanted to draw the Earl. His design is just the coolest ♡ But then I was so excited to draw the Earl on a rampage that I completely forgot that this IM included the chapter long hug that is 219 AND Mana's existential crisis in 220 AND that stellar quote by mysterious glasses man in 221. I was having a field day playing with the themes and motifs, basically. I still want to play more with this "heart" of D. Gray-man ♡

Oh man this was fun to experiment and draw. I had no idea what I was doing since again, this was the first (serious) thing I’ve drawn in about 4 years. There’s quite a few runner up ideas.

Did anyone notice that the outer ring is literally the piano score (irl) for the 14th song 👀 . I played piano as a kid specifically for college, but that piece was the only piece of music I’ve ever learned on my own accord.

My original page was pretty boring, so I had to come up with some way of spicing it up :)
