Hello, WINX fandom.

a slightly altered timeline.   send me  ‘ timeline ’  and a number and i will tell you how my muse and their life would have turned out in a life slightly altered compared to their canon one—same universe, but where something little, or something big, went differently.

the timeline in which they live an ideal life, had no opportunities taken from them, were subjected to nothing terrible, where they grew up to fulfil their full potential.

the timeline in which they never met who would become the most influential or important person in their life, or that person was taken from them before they were capable of forming memories.

the timeline in which something important to them happened in a different stage of life.

the timeline in which they knew beforehand of something they would have prevented if given the chance.

the timeline in which they continue on from the current point in their lives to the best happy ending that is within their reach, where nothing that has happened so far is negated but from now on, the happy things start piling up.

the timeline in which everything that could go wrong from this point on… does.

the timeline in which they never experience the loss that taught them something important.

the timeline in which they gain everything they want, except for the thing they wanted the most.

the timeline in which they live the life they currently see the most likely for them.

the timeline in which something big to them never happened.

the timeline in which something very little happened differently, but it changed a lot.

the timeline in which they had a person in their life when they needed one the most.

the timeline in which instead of the most influential person in their life, they had a person who had the complete opposite effect on them.

the timeline in which they took a chance they didn’t in canon.

the timeline in which they let a chance go by.

I'm going to be hopeful and say that maybe it's the quality of the video making Flora look like a paper sheet, since Aisha doesn't match with the teaser footage either (in the teaser she was very much dark-skinned), and even Bloom and Stella looked like pure snow

I mean maybe they just made everyone whiter but like,,,,,,,, it still aint okay

Honestly, I really am not okay with Rainbow right now and I don’t think anyone else is either? So like we’ll see and hopefully it’s not actually that bad but Flora literally looks white and I’m about to fight someone. I am hoping that’s it’s just lighting or something but like I wouldn’t be surprised if it wasn’t.

What even is tiger lily? Sorry but when I watched WOW and swore her I was shocked to not see people complain about her, hell I'm shocked there is a show made in resent times that clearly culturally appropriated from native America's.

And look, this isn’t a new thing either.  Disney’s version of Peter Pan and that god-awful Pan movie with Rooney Mara are both horribly racist towards Tiger Lily.  And in general there’s a lot of racism towards Native American/First Nation people in North America alone, so when a place like Italy gets a hold of a character like that, you get…

Seriously why is she wearing facepaint in the shape of a mask?  Why are there random feathers in her hair like that?  Why can she be this dark but FLORA CAN’T BE WHAT THE FUC-

And you’re completely correct; no one really spoke up about it.  I have honestly seen 0 people mention Tiger Lily, and I don’t know if that’s because she’s a minor character or because people saw her and were smart enough to not touch that with a 15 foot pole because that’s what I did.

Either way Tiger Lily in this show is ridiculously racist to the point it’s not even funny.

After what feels like decades I finally finished the Aisha Enchantix fanart !!!! yay

So, you think Winx’s failure in America justifies its whitewashing.

Here’s the thing: if everyone was white to begin with and then SURPRISE, we enter the Nickbow Era and Flora/Layisha are suddenly POC, and now that we’re out of the American market we’re all white again? Sure, we can say the show was Americanized and now moving more towards its Euro-roots.

That’s not what happened though.  Rainbow’s characters had the same design for literally a decade.  And they tried to enter the American market twice in that decade - once in 2004/2005 (did you know Winx Season 1 ran on Cartoon Network in America? Or that they had partnerships with Disney? Fun!), and then with Nickbow.  In the first instance Rainbow was producing all the content themselves, and just looking for someone to air the show and sell dolls.  Nickbow was a co-production, but even then they didn’t really diversify the show because - spoiler - any POC Nickbow character (hi Roy and maybe Krystal?) is now in The Hole Of Forgotten Characters, hanging out with the other male POC that Rainbow killed before Nickbow even happened.

The first instance of whitewashing in Winx - the fairy coture line - wasn’t sold in America.  The second instance, World of Winx, was a Netflix show meant to be marketed internationally (that still aired in Italy on TV).  Winx Club’s rebranding is being done to interest a new young audience, you know because it’s been 15 years and all the kids who used to watch it are old fucks like me.  There’s a fucking quote that says as much that I’m really mad I can’t find because someone took it off Wikipedia WHY.  You gotta trust me on it unless you speak Italian and can find it.  It has ZERO to do with how it did in America.  Rainbow doesn’t care, because they’re rolling in fat stacks of money right now.

It would be silly to think Italy’s climate hasn’t contributed to its current whitewashing (and I mean politically, not real weather).  But I am also not Italian and locked out of Ebsco right now, so as my good friend Jon says:

YO I ALMOST FORGOT: I don’t know why we’re trying to also throw China under the bus for Rainbow’s fuckups now? That was new.  But just because SOME people (not even just Chinese, so MORE YIKES there, Scoob) think you should bleach your skin, DOESN’T MAKE IT OKAY TO TAKE AWAY POC CHARACTERS FROM YOUNG CHILDREN WHO JUST WANT TO SEE THEMSELVES REPRESENTED IN MEDIA.  Also, DON’T BLEACH YOUR SKIN. IT’S DANGEROUS AND YOU’RE FUCKING FINE THE WAY YOU ARE.

Alright, that’s about all the yelling I feel like doing right now.  I’ll see you guys in a month or two when we get to hear the newest reason why it isn’t Rainbow’s fault they’re whitewashing their characters.
