psychopomp! chapter 5 - author deep dive:

Hi, considering chapter 5 has officially been posted i thought i'd do one of my favorite things I did while writing what i've done, which is info dumping about my little fic to no one in particular.

This post will have some spoilers for the chapters out so far so,,, if you haven't read the fic yet, maybe scroll away.

the chapter name, hidebehind was one of the only chapter names pretty quickly established from the drafting process, I knew i wanted to write episodic chapters with different characters/adventures, and i knew that glimmer's chapter would be about this specific american folklore. Midway through the writing process i did in fact consider changing it into "harbinger" but honestly i wasn't super convinced by that one.

My favorite chapter naming fact of this story is that the first letter of each chapter spells out psychopomp! which is just fun for me, personally

In this chapter my main goals were 1. establish adora's backstory, 2. showcase the sanctum from an outsider's perspective and 3. uncover the spirit's true identity.

Although i was clear i was going to have to kill glimmer at the end of this chapter, I struggled to figure out how exactly to show her character in a compelling way.

I asked my gf before i had even started writing the first chapter "what would hurt more, reading a death from the pov of the person that survives or the person that dies?" and she said "the person that dies" so... yes you could have gotten adora's pov from all this but, I chose suffering.

I wanted glimmer to be an indecisive, loyal person by nature, her main characteristics had to be her sense of duty, loyalty but also the freespirit she keeps hidden due to her sense of guilt. I'm hoping that i did a good job showcasing that.

In this chapter i also hint at the fact that there is a cultural/magical differences depending on the house the witches belong to.

Also! we get to finally see who wrote adora's priced possession: her break up letter. When catra originally reads it, she assumes she wrote it due to the letter at the end of the page resembling a C or a G. I was super excited for this to be brought back up, and thought of the letter as my guide when navigating the chapter more than my own notes.

I love adora in this story, idk why, i feel like this chapter begins to show you why i love her so much. I loved writing a chapter told from the point of view of someone that loves her despite not truly understanding her. I also think it will (hopefully) help the reader comprehend her point of view when we finally get to it.

I did in fact miss writing catra so much this chapter, specially cause i had been stuck in her head for nearly 40k words already, but! I'm super excited for where the story is headed, and I hope it all starts falling into place for the reader too.

I love this story and i love the characters i've been creating through it, so I hope whoever made it through this long ass post is also enjoying the journey as much as I'm enjoying writing it!
