Links Gone Dead
Alas, I no longer have access to the school server that housed many of the project links posted on this blog.  I've graduated and the links are dead. Maybe, one day, I'll move my projects elsewhere.  Probably, these projects will go into retirement, never to be posted again.  (I mean, they weren't all that great to begin with.  Phantoms of my youth and all that.  What on earth am I on about?  Oh, right...)  Please forgive the missing information. On to bigger and better things!

A BACKLOGGER'S APOLOGY It's been a very busy few months.  Summer came and went... and now, quite suddenly, my final year of university is drawing to a close.  Between sleepless nights, tinkering away at my thesis project, and all that "daily life" type stuff, it isn't any wonder that a poorly organized child such as myself was unable to find some blogging time. And how I've missed it!  Instead of simply spitting out a number of poorly written posts, I created list upon rewritten list of blog post ideas that I fancied I should share with the world, just as soon as I had the chance. Sadly, that list is lost.  This is unfortunate since I love lists and there were some really great topics to be discussed.  You'll have to take my word for it. I digress.  Since consistency is not something I've mastered, I'll be posting whenever I can (be it daily, weekly, whatever).  However, there is a genuine level of interest and passion in every post I write — and that won't soon go away. There's so much I want to tell you, afterall!  You can look forward to some posts about: Triglav (my bachelor thesis project) Meta 2011 (the art show where Triglav was exhibited) Growing excitement about graduation, spring, upcoming comic book movies, Easter candy (anything and everything really) Geeky things and Doctor Who Series 6!  SO EXCITED :D

Artist Diem Chau carved a total of 66 Crayola crayons in the likeness of superstar footballers for a series of Nike World Cup press kits.  What a charming thing to do with crayons! Click the link above to visit her site, The Pleasure of Tiny Things, and see more great photos and a brief history of each Crayola colour used.

Yet another reblog because I just couldn't resist this wonderful installation. Design firm numen / for use used 530 rolls of transparent adhesive tape measuring 117, 000 feet and weighing 100 pounds to create one truly brilliant installation. There's something very sensuous and organic about the multiple translucent tendons stretching from pillar to pillar.  I'm incredibly fond of the idea of taking a material that is so mundane and readily manufactured and transforming it into something mesmerizing. Though bigger isn't always better, creating art on a large scale can have the intriguing benefit of shaping one's experience or perception of a given environment.  Looking at the pictures of this installation, you can't help but want to explore the space for yourself.  It draws you in both visually and spatially, as well as on a tactile level.

Showcasing the best and brightest in indie craft + design since 2003.
There's a lot of chatter going on about the latest SNL episode with Betty White.  I happen to think she's brilliant (as was her performance).  She's one seriously awesome lady :) I stumbled upon this link showcasing a super cute Betty White Cake by Renegade Handmade.  It made me happy and I just had to reblog it. If you haven't yet seen it, you can probably catch the episode on the NBC website.  If you don't live in the States you might find it a bit trickier to find an accessible video online.  If I find a good quality link I'll be sure to post it.  In the meantime, happy hunting!

As a creative person who loves working with found objects and inexpensive materials, crafting projects on the web truly motivate me to be less wasteful and not take any material for granted. It's always exciting to see what other people think of and how ordinary materials can be transformed into objects that are fashionable, beautiful, or useful in some way. It is for these reasons that I've always been a frequenter of Instructables and Craftzine.  Just recently, I discovered the fabulous online crafting network, 'Cut Out And Keep'. I can't wait to explore community posts and see what crafters have made!

I finally finished the book design for my Topics and Issues in Design course.  The layout isn't as organized as I wanted, but I was pressed for time (I mean, REALLY, pressed for time). Someone cheekily pointed out that the vector on the front cover looks like the symbol for the Science Centre where I live.  Somehow, in all of my school stress, I unconsciously ripped off the Science Centre logo!  (Though, I must say, I like my vector a lot better.) It's a very simply layout throughout.  I wanted to get it over and done with as quickly as possible.  I assure you, there were some truly stellar books done by my peers.  I could only hope to be half the graphic designer that some of these talented individuals are. Thank you to Canon Inc. for printing our work!

This is a short animation I did for one of my classes.  The character is based off of the title character from the 3D animated short film, "Blue".  It was done using Maya 2009 following the tutorial in Learning Maya 7: Foundation. I encountered a troublesome error just before animating a walk cycle for my character.  Apparently, it's a common error for those attempting the tutorial in the book.  Either we're all missing something critical that allows for proper keyframing, or the book was just too vague on something. My class was focused on rigging but, being the stubborn lady that I am, I made it a point of modelling and texturing my character and environment from scratch.  I'm still very proud of him, even if he has been poorly animated. One day, Ardie, one day!  (I'll reanimate you and it will be awesome.)

This site contains information on all of my most recent dérive experiences.  Included are some photos of my original dérive (as seen in a previous post), my urban exploration of the closed Regal Constellation Hotel, and some interesting tid-bits about accessing unprotected surveillance cameras on the AXIS network through Google. I think one of my favourite cameras is the one currently surveilling this aquarium somewhere in Japan (I checked the location through the use of an IP locator): You can access that particular camera through the link here.  Learn to access many more of these cameras by following the instructions posted on the 'Experience II' page of my research report website. EDIT:  The aquarium camera has just recently been taken offline.  Maybe, it had something to do with the unknown users accessing it >_> *ehem* I highly doubt it.  The page is still up so the camera view may yet return.

Black Cubes (Inter-Connected Final) Aaron Cooper, Johanna Jisun Lee, Stacie Lee, Victoria Markowski An interactive minimalist art piece that explores streams of consciousness, movement, physical obstruction, rhythm and linearity. Inspired by Kazimir Malevich's 'Black Square', this art piece seeks to bring his work into three-dimensional space. Through its focus on physicality, 'Black Cubes' reinvents Suprematist theory and infuses it with a contemplative and dynamic energy. As one moves down the hallway, one is faced with a series of cube fixtures.  These fixtures appear to be stationary and are suspended at random heights below the ceiling.  The stark geometric form of the cubes may inspire curiousity in those travelling through the hallway.  A level of visual interest is created for those entering the space. As one moves down the hallway (presumably to get from point A to point B), one unavoidably engages the art piece (or is the art piece engaging us?).  When it becomes active, a cube may lower itself to eye level or even move up and down vertically in a random pattern so as to confuse visitors.  The subtle nature of the piece demands attention and disrupts the linearity of the hallway space with its slow and unique rhythm.  Visitors must focus to confirm if they have truly seen the fixtures moving.  Special thanks to my group mates for their hard work during our collaborative production. Also, here's a link to our second video for this art piece.

Doctor Who Season 5 is here!
Tumblr media
Photocred:  thedoctorwhowebsite Today was the start of a brand new series of Doctor Who!  For devoted fans living here in Canada, this meant a choice between proxying the BBC iPlayer and enjoying it alongside residents of the UK, or waiting a painfully long week to see it premiere on our very own Space Channel. Though some friends opted to wait for the full HD episodes that crop up on the internet just a few days after every episode is aired, I must admit, I wasn't one willing to wait. I was quite eager to see Matt Smith try on the character of the Doctor and find out what Moffat had in store for his audience.  I was not disappointed. I do despise the increasing amount of CGI in Doctor Who, simply because I feel that it may one day detract from the brilliant storytelling of each episode.  However, the Doctor Who team is really working hard to find a balance between the two — and it shows.  The camera work and lighting, in particular, have been wonderful.  Moffat and his crew spared no expense in trying to start off the series with a bang. Among some of the brilliance in this new series is the redesign of the TARDIS (both inside and out), a regenerated sonic screwdriver (now available in green!), and character leads who are, admittedly, both very charming and personable.  Already, you can see some of the Doctor's new found "quirks" showing through — a testament to the excellent screen writing put forth by the team and to Smith's talent as an actor.  Don't get me wrong, he's no David Tennant, but he sure did a heck of a job! And Amy, the Doctor's new companion, adds just the right level of spark to the mix.  Did I mention she's cute as a button and Scottish? Overall, a great episode.  I can't wait to see what else is in store for us.  The new Doctor's appearance and mannerisms only slightly remind me of the 5th Doctor, while simultaneously maintaining an entirely new level of crazy.  We finally have a Doctor who is adequately bonkers! ...as for some downsides... I'm not quite sure how I feel about the new intro sequence.  It just doesn't have the same flare as the old one did.  It may be the high brass notes at the beginning, or the vortex looking like an upset intestinal tract.  It may even be the tacky paper-like appearance of the TARDIS bouncing around the screen for 2 whole minutes.  I can't quite put my finger on it, but something isn't right.  Great new logo, though.
