Diploma In Minimal Access Surgery - DMAS
The Diploma in Minimal Access Surgery (DMAS) is a comprehensive and structured laparoscopy course designed to take students from the basics of laparoscopic surgery to becoming expert laparoscopic surgeons. The program begins by teaching the fundamentals of operative skills, including mastering insufflation techniques, understanding optics and imaging devices used in MAS, editing laparoscopic videos, and safely handling various energy sources in minimal access surgery.
The course equips students with the skills and attributes required to work as an assistant, camera operator, or lead surgeon. Within this framework, beginner surgeons gain the confidence to perform Level 1 and Level 2 surgeries, while experienced laparoscopic surgeons are encouraged to advance to more complex procedures.
For gynecologists, the DMAS program includes training in urogynaecology, colposcopy, and the full spectrum of diagnostic and operative hysteroscopy. Additionally, students receive 4 days of dedicated hands-on training in diagnostic and operative hysteroscopy. Upon completion, they are awarded both the DMAS and a Certificate in Diagnostic and Operative Hysteroscopy (at no additional cost for hysteroscopy training).
For general surgeons, the DMAS course offers 4 days of dedicated hands-on training in diagnostic and therapeutic interventions for Upper and Lower GI endoscopy. Surgeons completing the course receive both the DMAS and a Certificate in Upper and Lower GI Endoscopy (at no additional cost for endoscopy training).
The extent of student involvement in laparoscopic procedures, including insufflation, port placement, and dissection, is contingent upon their individual experience, proficiency, and laparoscopic aptitude.
SMASTI has introduced unique concept of learning laparoscopic surgery by innovating a video disection class. Here the student displays the unedited video of the procedure in front of the faculty and the fellow students of the cases in which he/she was the part of the surgical team.
At every executional step, the faculty intervenes and comments on his/her performance and does the task analysis, performance analysis and coagnative analysis of the his/her actions. This mode of learning brings out the weakness and strenghts of the students and help in improving and rectifying his/her mistakes.
DMAS enthuses the students with caution and confidence at the same time and brings out the best out of him/her.
