Imagine little Zeref learning that he’s getting a younger sibling, and he was all excited. Imagine his reaction to seeing his baby brother for the first time. Then after a few years, his little brother died.

So Zeref was telling all that backstory to the book of END last chapter, acting as if he was talking directly to Natsu. What if he’s always pretended to talk to Natsu after his death. Always updating Natsu on his progress with the research. Promising him that he’ll bring him back one day, and all his teachers are wrong. Then he met Natsu again on Tenrou, and Natsu didn’t even know him, but Zeref has been talking to him for over 400 years.
