Final BriefNote
The Concept
 Our Big Message
Yogyakarta used to be a peaceful and comfortable city for everyone, including the pedestrian. But nowadays it is full of cars and motorcycles and congestion began to happen everywhere in the city. To analyze why do we have these terrible congestions, we tried to create a simple cycle scheme based on our experiences:
Lot of people use vehicle -> Congestion & messy parking lots -> Lack of space for pedestrian -> Not comfortable -> Walking is not fun anymore -> Pedestrian bowed out -> Pedestrian starts to use vehicle -> Congestion & messy parking lots…… and the cycle goes around.
Our big goal is to break that cycle. We want to add spaces for the pedestrian, make the walking experience as interesting as possible so that more people would be triggered to walk and be a pedestrian and in the end, make the stakeholders facilitate the pedestrian. Bring back the peaceful and comfortable Yogyakarta.
Gallery of The Walker
Gallery of The Walker is one of the facility available from the Pedestrian App, an exclusive app only for the pedestrian. We believe by creating Gallery for The Walker we could engage as many as people to be a pedestrian and measure it. The idea of the gallery is simple, to offer the pedestrian something that a vehicle can not offer, create a gallery that only a walker can enjoy by using architecture and building as the media of the gallery with mobile device application to access. What’s unique is the gallery is on the street, it’s actually an existing building which could be projected with a curated visual art piece but… the pedestrian could only see it from their camera phone/tab which install that Pedestrian App. The name Walking came from the mobile system of the sculpture that is placed in every front of the targeted building.
Exclusivity and the feel of being special is the thing that we want to reward the pedestrian with. For example, to enjoy the Gallery for The Walker one have to complete a walk from a sculpture to another sculpture. Where's the place for the sculpture? It could be placed anywhere but in this case we placed in front of the historical buildings, as the core of the site we chose - KM 0, Yogyakarta-. These sculptures functioned as the starting and ending point detector for the challenge. The challenge and the reward itself could vary but still leads to one goal: triggering people to be a pedestrian.
Positive Side Effects
Beside our big message, there are also several side effects that invented by this project. For example, the Pedestrian App also calculating data of its user which could be used as a survey parameter for the government thus they will know how many is the pedestrian. In the other hand, by creating Gallery for The Walker, local artist talent could be enhanced. Simply by submitting their artwork into the Pedestrian App portal and competed to be chosen based on voting system. The Gallery will also add a new colour to the city’s identity and the best thing is this system could be adapted in other country with different culture and people. It is sustain and flexible.
 The Design Process
We started this competition with understanding the briefcase. The issue about data is not really familiar for us thus each of us was trying to interpret the briefcase and discussed it together. Then we did some brainstorming using sticky notes and (a lot of) papers to gather general idea. After that, we sorted our way of thinking based on Building and Issues. Thus we asked for each of our member to deliver a complete idea consisted of the core idea, the background, the kind of data and how it will create a social impact.
Up till the midnight the brainstorming process still going on and we tried several methods such as inventing a random notions and developed it together nor write our thoughts in the mirror. Feels like need a charge of inspiration, the four of us take a ride to the heart of Yogyakarta to figure out what building and what issue is urgent and interesting to solve. After the ‘short getaway’ we tried to gather our ideas, clear up our mind and decide what are we going to do in the morning.
We conducted an interview session in the project’s site in purpose to know what is actually needed by the pedestrian and to feel the plus and the minus of the site. After the interview we concluded the need of the pedestrian and seeking government’s plan because we want it to be on the same track as the city’s vision. The following things we do is to evaluate and asking for some friend’s opinion about our idea, evaluate again and finally to ensure if each of the member’s perspective is the same: to agree with our final synthesis and complete the final product -the video and the briefnote-.
The Response
Our friend’s opinion towards our idea is fine and their suggestions been really helpful for us in developing our idea. To join this competition has been an unforgettable experience for us. It’s been really pressing, tense and fun at the same time.

We really liked the idea of this video mapping on a heritage building. It creates a unique vibe and could be such a solution to a decaying urban spaces. It is sustainable cause the visual could be changed depends on the request or maybe... the hottest issue/trends.
We are thinking abt making this exciting facility for the pedestrian. But exclusive, only for them, as a reward for their effort of walking and not contribute a pollution for the city.
Well... well... well..
*thinking*

Is the Pedestrian case a real case?
All of our team member agree that pedestrian is an urgent case in our city, Yogyakarta, Indonesia and so does our other friends and even for the random pedestrians along KM 0. But is there any effort from our government towards this pedestrian issues? Is it an issue for them?
Thus we seek some information from newspaper and websites and found some articles that related to our issue - Pedestrian in Yogyakarta.
City Government of Yogyakarta began to socialize and early trials pedestrian Malioboro, Sunday (26/01/2014). The test is done through programs pedestrianisasi Car Free Day (CFD) in cut road Ahmad Yani, from the junction Ngejaman to Kilometer Zero Point, Sunday (01/26/2014).
"This is the beginning of the application of semi-pedestrian in the city of Yogyakarta. So some sort of test or socialization of the municipal government. From here residents will know, what if the the Malioboro later converted into pedestrian area (pedestrian)", said Mayor of Yogyakarta, Haryadi Suyuti.

There is a big masterplan for making Malioboro (the city center of Yogyakarta - red) as a pedestrian area and it will be started from the south part or the KM 0. There will be a plaza pedestrian in the middle of KM 0.
The existing area had already been a car free day area for every Sunday from 6-10. "That car free day duration will be increasing due to the development of plaza pedestrian.", said Aman Yuriadijaya, Mayor's Assitant (29/4).

Thus by analyzing those articles we believe that our idea is on the right track. It is true that pedestrian issue is real and urgent thus we have to design something that would trigger

Consument Checking :p
After we do the re-structuralization of ideas. We tried to ask opinions from some friends about our concept and ideas. Will they understand what we want? Will they interested on our idea? If this project realised, would they participate? We needed their opinion for evaluating our product and gather the right trigger to achieve our big message.
----
Tumblr media
Arsy
He think our idea is interesting. He likes the way we try to increase the amount of the pedestrian to show the urgency of need of space of pedestrian.
Tumblr media
Damar
He understands what is our big message - to give more space for pedestrian, to attract the non pedestrian to start walking -. He said it is pretty easy to understand the step and that our idea is not so complicated and applicable.
Tumblr media
Nugie
He said he want to be a pedestrian if we do our project. Wohoo!
-----
So far, friends like our product, we wish you liked it too :3

Structurize the Idea!
We got a lot of ideas we need to simplify so it would solve the main issue - Pedestrian Space -. After we interviewed some random pedestrians, we began to sort which idea to develop. We choose some ideas that fits the needs and the real issue that the real pedestrian cope with.
Thus here we are again, brainstorming some datas and trying to develop em into a product!

Pedestrian Mapping at the KM 0 and Important Buildings!
So after we analyse the site - KM 0 - we tried to be a little bit more specific on the building analysis, following the brief that we have to augment a local building. There are several important buildings that define KM 0, each of them have a different function and size but there are one line that connects them all: historical buildings that create a distinct identity to KM 0. There won't be the bold vibe of KM 0 without these buildings.
Tumblr media
1. Fort Vredeburg
Tumblr media
Is a former fort with an indische style of architecture. Nowadays it's functioned as a museum and have a multifunction hall and parks inside. It's one of the tourist destination in Yogyakarta. Super crowded on the weekend.
2. Serangan Oemoem Satoe Maret Monument
Tumblr media
An open space monument. There are a lot of culinary kiosk near this place and there are a lot of communities gather in this spot, from the skateboarding community up till the dance community.
3. BNI 46 Bank
Tumblr media
One of the landmark in KM 0, this building still functioned as a bank. It used to be the favourite object for photography in KM 0.
4. Pos Indonesia - Post Office
Tumblr media
Just like the other building, this one has also built since years and years ago. We could still see the architecture style whom very indische.
5. Bank Indonesia Old Office
Tumblr media
This beautiful building is now functioned as a public library, a museum and also a multifunction hall, mainly for exhibition.
------
There're no 'the most powerful building' because in this historical building complex in KM 0, each building is unique and create a distinct vibe for KM 0.

Interview with the Pedestrian! - report & conclusion
Holla! So this morning we've interviewed some of the pedestrian along KM 0 to know what they want and what could make the non pedestrian to be interested in walking!
These are our questions;
Why do people don't want to walk?
What do you enjoy the most from walking?
What's the benefit of walking rather than ride a vehicle?
What could make your 'walking time' more exciting?
---
Tumblr media
This madam worked near the bus station and she often walked from the bus station. She loves walking cause it's healthy! She enjoys getting the breeze in the morning but she hate that walking is not really easy because lots of sidewalk is used for motorcycle parking lots (illegally).
---
Tumblr media
And this ma'am, she is a housewife and she often walk because her house is near from the bus station. She used to walk with her daughter to school. The best time to walk for her is in the breezy morning where she could breathe a fresh air. According to her, KM 0 has one of the best sidewalks in Yogyakarta cause it got a lot of trees but she really hates the  illegal parking lots in the sidewalks.
---
Tumblr media
Then we met these two highschooler, they really enjoy walking, it's healthy yet fun moreover when they're hang in out with their friends. Best thing they like of being a pedestrian is the moment they enjoy the surroundings's view. For them, being a pedestrian means being happier and more relaxed. They said, distance and vague are the common excuse of using the vehicle.
---
Tumblr media
The fourth one is Esti, a market employee whom resides in the area of KM 0. She used to walked everyday from her house to her workplace. The most uncomfortable moment for her is when the pedestrian is quiet, it makes her anxious. Meanwhile she enjoys the art exhibition / performance in the pedestrian, it excites her.
---
Tumblr media
Last but not least we interviewed a friendly guy named Abas, he's from Jakarta but he often go to Yogyakarta. He enjoys walking down the pedestrian but he can't handle the bad smell in several places. He likes the shady vibe in KM 0 and he thinks it's so much better than Jakarta. He feel relaxed and healthy when he walks. He agrees with the art performance/exhibition along the pedestrian, he said it augments the identity of the city. Just like the other person we interviewed, he hates how pedestrian's right is taken by the illegal parking lots.
---------------------
Conclusion
Actually people love walking.
Health reason and relaxation is the main trigger for walking.
People agree that art performance & exhibition will escalate the attraction of the pedestrian.
Illegal parking lots are the public enemy for the pedestrian.

Hello guys so this morning at 6.30 we're strolling again to the heart of Yogyakarta city. From this time lapse we could see how the vehicle / automobiles 'conquer' the street. When we pass the pedestrian, it's almost empty. It leaves us with big question, why don't you walk? Is there anything a designer can do to increase the use of pedestrian? Is there any data that could interest people so they wanna walk? Is there anything exclusive? Which a walker can do and the one in the vehicle can't? ----- wait for the surprise :p

About the Site! KM 0 Yogya!
Tumblr media
The Earth image of Yogyakarta city centre. The nodes between 5-6-8-7-3-14 is called the KM 0 or the Zero Kilometer of Yogyakarta. The centre.
Tumblr media
The panoramic view of KM 0.
What's so special about this place?
Located at the complex historical buildings, this place is one of the most visited public space in Yogyakarta. There are a lot of museums and education centres too which attracted so many tourist in the peak season. As the core of Yogyakarta, there had been many activity held in this area, from an art performances, culinary kiosk upto demonstration/protest.
What's the problem of this place?
KM 0 is going crowded each time. There had been a lot of traffic congestion, moreover on the weekend. Parking lots had been settled around several places nearby, but still, to transfer from one building to another, it's not really walkable thus a lot of people choose to use vehicle when transferring from one place to another... Which we think it's so ineffective and create a bad impact such as congestion and air pollution. We wish people could be able to walk comfortably to decrease those bad impacts.

Our Questions! Kaboom!
We realised that to have an ideal way to make walking more fun, we gotta  find some hints or reason behind the phenomena.... We have some answer to seek!
Why do people don't want to walk? Like... honestly.. what's the reason behind?
What do people enjoy the most from walking?
What is the benefit of walking rather than using a personal vehicle
What could make your walking-time more fun?

Finally We Found some Enlightment!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Our first selfie after the long brainstorming hours! Haha! Pardon our panda eyes (*_*) hahaha
So finally we're back to our first idea after we invent several others *like always.....* - we're back to the pedestrian issue!
Why do we went back? 'Cause as the citizen of Yogyakarta, we really miss the old vibe of the city - peaceful and calming - since now the city is growing into a metropolitan one with the congestion and messy traffic. KM 0 as the heart of the city used to be full of pedestrians but the amount keeps descending until today.
Tumblr media
Old Yogyakarta vibe.... 1950s
Tumblr media
The existing Yogyakarta vibe.... the traffic...... 2000s
We created a simple cycle scheme based on our experiences:
Lot of people use vehicle -> Congestion & messy parking lots -> Lack of space for pedestrian -> Not comfortable -> Walking is not fun anymore -> Pedestrian bowed out -> Pedestrian starts to use vehicle -> Congestion & messy parking lots...... and the cycle goes around
We want to break that cycle! We want to make walking experience as fun as possible so people would be triggered to walk again, bring back the peaceful and comfortable Yogyakarta. :D
