[𝐌𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐮𝐬 𝐌𝐚𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐮𝐦 ] or rather the Hammer of Witches—perhaps you have heard of this term before. The infamous book that was condemned by top theologians for recommending unethical and illegal procedures for accusing and abusing women of olden times.

However, in this fictional version of history, this book became the center pillar of a secret organization whose main purpose is to hunt down real and dangerous practitioners of magecraft—witches. Founded in the 1490s, the Malleus Maleficarum witch hunters have been actively in conflict with the Wiccan society and have been trying to sniff out routes leading to the hidden City of Witches in order to finally annihilate them all at once.

Currently led by the right-hand of the pope, Cardinal Lucius de Montgomery. With his valiant modern strategies, the hunter org is at their most powerful force since their founding and gathers quite a bit of respect and awe in some political circles. But enough talk about this noble man; it's not time to reveal more about him yet.

[ 𝒲𝒾𝓉𝒸𝒽 𝑜𝒻 𝐸𝓃𝒹𝑜𝓇 𝐼𝓃𝒻𝑜 𝒟𝓊𝓂𝓅 #𝟣 ] Introducing to you guys the witch society I’ve come up with for this story~

𝐖𝐢𝐜𝐜𝐚𝐧 - 𝐏𝐬𝐞𝐮𝐝𝐨 𝐋𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐨𝐧 This is an alternate dimension that the witches of olden times created as a safe haven for witches. Over time, it developed into a city for witches wherein one can practice and live freely as a witch without being fearful of the threat of witch hunters, the church, or normal humans. (You may be questioning, ‘Why London’? Because of the infamous clock tower and the countless references, it was used as a connection to magic schools.)

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐖𝐢𝐭𝐜𝐡 𝐒𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐭𝐲 Led by the three Grand Ancient Witches that are rumored to have existed since the Divine Era, where gods still live alongside humans. Some also believe they are the three Ladies of Fates themselves. Their power encompasses all teachings of magic—well, except for the forbidden and cursed. Below the Grand Ancient Witches are the Seven Noble Covens. Each is led by Matriarch Witch that oversee and guide witches that practice particular magic.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐍𝐨𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐬 𝘾𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙣 𝙤𝙛 𝘿𝙞𝙫𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 This coven is considered a very special coven and is placed highest on the hierarchy of covens. Witches that have prophetic powers and can see or foretell the future belong to this coven. Witches here work closely with the divinity to oversee future events so that the whole of Wiccan society can be prepared for what is to come.

𝘾𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙣 𝙤𝙛 𝙋𝙨𝙮𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙘𝙨 Witches who have mastery over the mind belong here. If the divination coven works on a higher level of consciousness, the coven of psychics works with the shallower depth of the mind, i.e., the ego. Witches in this coven can also manipulate things on the material plane if their powers are strong enough.

𝘾𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙣 𝙤𝙛 𝘾𝙤𝙣𝙟𝙪𝙧𝙚𝙧𝙨 This coven is for the witches who have the ability to summon beings into existence, whether they be elemental, divine, mythic, or ancient entities. Of course, not everything should be summoned, and that includes the dead.

𝘾𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙣 𝙤𝙛 𝙏𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙨𝙢𝙪𝙩𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 Here, witches who can transform into another being or thing belong. However, their abilities are different from those of the Coven of Alchemy. For witches in this coven, they can only transform themselves alone and not others.

𝘾𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙣 𝙤𝙛 𝙉𝙖𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙖𝙡 𝙀𝙡𝙚𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙨 In this coven, witches who have great control over the elements gather. They are a bit different from conjurers, as they can only borrow the elements that entities or spirits rule over and are not able to summon the actual beings themselves.

𝘾𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙣 𝙤𝙛 𝘼𝙡𝙘𝙝𝙚𝙢𝙮 Witches who are interested in the fundamental structure of various things and magic are here. The witches in this coven are fond of developing new things or breaking things down to their very core in order to learn how various things work.

𝘾𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙣 𝙤𝙛 𝙈𝙖𝙜𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙡 𝙈𝙚𝙙𝙞𝙘𝙞𝙣𝙚 This coven is solely dedicated to the development of healing magic. Witches who are fond of brewing potions and developing medicines belong here.

【Ｔｈｅ　Ｏｕｔｃａｓｔｓ】 In every society, there are always those who go down a wayward path. These outcasts from pseudo-London are the infamous practitioners of the forbidden and dark magic. Witches who are caught performing human sacrifices or toying with human fates or lives are banished from society and will be labeled outcasts. Of course, despite being banished, they are still being monitored by the Great Three and a special elite force of witches that are specially equipped to battle these outcasts whenever they try to commit more malicious acts. Most outcasts are on the run, though, and are hiding from the eyes of the Three. Those on the run are branded as criminals in the Wiccan Society and have a bounty on their heads. (Our MC, En, is one of them, haha.)

The pitiable witch who longs for death but is unable to commit—-

Zuen or En hails from a long forgotten house of witches who practices the now forbidden practice of necromancy. Labeled as black witches and unwelcomed in Pseudo London, En’s family died out immediately during the high time of witch hunting in the 1400s.

Being the only survivor, Zuen was an orphan for as long as he can remember. Until he was then picked up by a young nobility lad who later became his master and him a slave. This master was rather an obnoxious one. Despite being a man of the church, he’s actually trying to study and practice black magic to obtain immortality. A big liar and hypocrite who uses Zuen to do all his very dirty deeds.

This man is trying to perform a ritual called “Ritual of Becoming or Ceremony of Endless Night”. A ritual to turn oneself into an undying Licht. But this ritual needs an immense amount of blood (human) sacrifice. So in the process, he makes Zuen kidnap poor people in the streets to kill and sacrifice. Eventually this mad man used Zuen as a test subject to test if the ritual is indeed reliable and is successful before he does it himself.

The success of the ritual varies depending on a person’s magical capabilities. And most of the time the chances of reviving and turning into a Licht are very low. So when the master forcefully made Zuen do the ritual, he did not actually revive at first and was thrown away to a human pit (sidenote: the ritual tears the soul and physical body if unsuccessful). He laid dead for a few years as different wars ravaged Europe.

That’s why when Zuen emerged from the decayed human pit – his master, who was then a priest, rose in political power and became a powerful figure in the christian church. That’s why he can’t easily approach the master in question to ask him about his phylactery (a box that contains his soul) .

Well, he actually managed to get close to the master but Zuen was then labeled as a heretic to be hunted down by the church. So from then he lived in hiding while trying to find the location of phylactery. During his hiding, he met another castaway witch who taught him various dark magic.

On another note, the phylactery was actually given to the elders of the witch society as a bribe from the master to get the aid of the witches during the middle ages political war era. But of course En did not find that out (until later in the story) since that was top secret info of the master and elders. On the current timeline of the story, Zuen already knows there’s a connection between his master and wiccan elders, but he still has no further info about the transaction/contract. He also has a certain inkling his phylactery is either hidden in Pseudo London, or in one of the outer planes.

Also, the master gave up on the lich ritual and just focused on gaining more power politically. He eventually learned another experiment to achieve immortality. That is, transferring his consciousness to suitable bodies, i.e. the next heir of his family when the heir reaches the age of 12. So yeah, the current leader (member of the church) of the Malleus Maleficarum organization is actually Zuen’s master.

Zuen knew of the transfer of ego ritual, that’s why he’s currently biding his time to plan another attempt to kill the abomination and get a chance to find his phylactery.
