hey so let’s rant for a second, it being aromantic awareness week and all

the social hierarchy of relationships according to the world is actually garbage

as an aromantic person, i do not experience romantic attraction. i do not happen to want a romantic relationship. some aros might, and that’s great. but lots don’t. i’m one of them that does not.

i’m ? just so over the way people ? treat platonic love ?

friendships are lesser. friends are “JUST friends” and romance is “MORE than friends”. you consult your romantic partner when you make a decision but if you consult your friends, people say ‘they’re just your friends, what they think doesn’t matter’.

what’s the difference? you’re telling me that a friend you kiss is inherently more valuable than one you don’t? you’re telling me that people can only be intimate and rely on each other if they’re ‘dating’?

you see friends that are very close and you say “they must be dating in secret, no friends are that close to each other.”

i say my dream relationship is just to have a very close best friend and you say that’s not a very big goal? do you know how hard it is to really find someone like that for you without the promise of dating or sex attached?

this aromantic spectrum awareness week, please remember that platonic love is important. please stop saying “just friends” or “more than friends”. no type of love or relationship is inherently more or less important than any other. let people prioritize and define their own relationships. _________________________________________________________

I do really enjoy that OFMD tries to represent a lot of different flavors of queerness and heterosexuality. You’ve got Stede and Ed, who are intensely into each other, and their relationship starts out as friendship and becomes both romantic and sexual (with Stede himself only reaching the sexual part once he understands the romantic part). It’s a first for them both and it’s also obviously a forever.

You’ve got Lucius and Pete, who start out with casual sex that eventually becomes a committed relationship and marriage. You’ve got Jim and Olu, who start as friends and develop romantic and sexual feelings, then also develop romantic feelings for other people, and are all OK and happy with that. You’ve got Buttons, who is in love with the sea! You’ve got Annie and Mary, who are also in a committed relationship but struggle a great deal with what they want. And other crew members—Roach, Frenchie, Wee John—who don’t pair off at all, don’t even seem interested in it.

You’ve got Mary and Doug, who are a happy heterosexual couple, not compelled to be heterosexual. Compulsory heterosexuality is bad, not heterosexuality. And compelling any of the queer people to be a particular way in order to be “correctly” queer would also be bad (we’ve talked before about how Izzy and Jack don’t treat queerness as bad, but are offended by a certain KIND of queerness). Overall, it’s lovely, positive representation across the board.

As a trans man who has had to put painstaking work into body positivity, body neutrality, and my own sense of manhood, I can't help but feel so bad for men who have, seemingly, never felt permission to have any positive feelings about their body and their manhood.

Yes, body positivity and body neutrality are for you, men. You owe nobody washboard abs, or beautiful facial hair, or clear skin, or unblemished skin, or "masculine" features. Genuinely, you are under no obligation to perform any of it. The weight of those expectations is genuinely suffocating. Let yourself remove that yoke from your shoulders and actually live.
