I looked up rivalry in the dictionary and to my surprise I didn’t see “two people hexing each other and insulting each other, who have a balance in power.” Instead I saw, “two people having a healthy competion.” or “two people competing for the same objective.” Is it possible for James to be Snape’s bully and his rival? Yeah. If James and Snape are competing against each other in class (like who can learn this spell the fastest or whatever) then they’re rivals. But James is also a bully when he hurts Snape because there IS an imbalance of power.

I really don’t think Rowling intended people to take her calling James and Snape rivals or whatever, as James and Snape were equal, because they were not. I don’t think she meant it as “Snape is just as bad as James for fighting back” I really think she just meant they were competing for the same thing. For me the same thing is who can do the best in class. Now some of y'all might assume Lily, but I have my reasons for not thinking they’re competing over Lily. And if they are, it’s a one sided competition that Snape isn’t participating in. Again I have my reasons for that opinion.

James had a crowd of students supporting him in SWM. Snape only had one. If that isn’t an imbalance in power then what is?

James is rich, Snape is poor. If that isn’t an imbalance in power then what is?

James is pureblood and Snape is halfblood, if that isn’t an imbalance in power, then what is?

James has qualities about him that people can criticize, criticizing is different from bullying; but those qualities of his can be changed. James can learn to be more humble. James can stop bullying his schoolmates. James doesn’t actually have any qualities that can be bullied. It’s not like he has greasy hair, or an abnormally large nose. It’s not like he walks in a twitchy manner. But Snape DOES have qualities that he can’t actually change (except for the walking funny one)

My point is that James has more impactful insult material to use against Snape, because Snape is poor, unpopular, and ugly, than Snape has to use against him.

In fact the worst insult Snape could come up with for James was “if you’d rather be brawny than brainy” which is basically a subtle “you’re stupid” but that IMHO isn’t as bad as insults that have been used against Snape (not all of them were from James) Snivellus, greasy, ugly git.

And even when he tries to insult James to Lily again this is what comes out “And he’s not…everyone thinks…big Quidditch hero - ” Like again James has an advantage over Snape, because Snape has qualities that can be bullied. James isn’t ugly, he isn’t poor, he isn’t a halfblood, he isn’t stupid, and there is so little to bully or insult about him, that even Snape who hates him is struggling to insult him.

So there is an imbalance of power in the insult department too.

Were James and Snape rivals? If they were competing for the same objective, then yes. Was James Snape’s bully? Yes. Were James and Snape equal to each other and were both balanced in power? No.
