Super Sculpey Sculpture Comparison

I decided to compare my squire to this siren as they are nothing alike. My squire is standing in stiff fighting stance - I used the stillness of clay sculptures to my advantage to create that pose, while the siren sculpture throws that stiffens out through the window - he pose is really flowy which perfectly reflects the water environment he should be in. 

The siren sculpture relies a lot on the texture, the tail would not look nearly as good if it didn’t have those indents marks, the net on his right hands would look like a lonely sleeve if it didn’t have that cross hatching. In my squire the texture is not used well enough, the chainmail and the hair are the only things that have a specific texture. The green undershirt is covered with scratches form look marks giving it more of a metallic look rather than cloth, the skin is also in a rough shape as I did not smoother it out enough. Next time I should use rubbing alcohol and brushes to clean up those areas .

The colours on the sculpture are pastel and you can see a variety of tones a specially in the gradient on the tail and the fin. Pastel colours are not often found in nature, well sirens themselves are not found in nature so these two facts complement each other well. My squire is painted in quite dark colours that seem super flat, even though I did try to dry brush the areas that would be darker. Also the paint once more seems really plastic like and it’s really shiny, the shirt is much more shiny and metallic than the sword it self which is actually made out of metal.

Casey Love – Creature Designer

Casey’s creature are often human like, however by exaggerating various features they gain other world vibes. The slimmer creatures with big heads make me think of some kind of aliens as they are often thought as being much smarter than us and their technology being much more superior to us. On the other hand the one eyed creature doesn’t seem as smart, rather stupid and much more brute because of it’s facial expression and broad shoulders.

His art journey began in 1997 as Casey started making latex monster masks for collectors. Over the past fifteen years he has produced resin model kits, Latex masks, Fine Art creature displays and busts.

The Walking Dead Make-Up

They use premade silicon masks in skin-tone like colours ( those are zombies so they are off form natural colours ) and attach them to the faces. Then they paint the skin so you cannot see the difference between the mask and the skin, they dry brush darker paint to show the detail and add blood in the heavily injured areas. What’s surprising the put on the eye contacts AFTER doing the make up which can actually destroy it as your eyes start tearing up after putting them on.

To create the sword i took a metal wire and hammered it flat, however it bent to the side so i turned the wire to the side and hammered it to get it straight. Then I used a file to clean up the sides, cut off the excess wire and attached it.

Testing After Effects

To create the company logo, movie title and subtitles I could use After Effects as it is really easy to animate text. First you chose the Text option and then click on where you want the text to appear. On the right hand side you can edit the size, colour, font etc. of your text.   

Once you type what you want you can animate it at the bottom by clicking on the arrow to open up all the options. Let’s say you want the text to move from left to right.Click on the stopwatch next the “Position” option, this will create a point on a timeline. Move the slider on the timeline, the further you move the slider the slower the text will move. Then click and drag the text where you want to move it, when you decided the location click the stopwatch again. You can edit the movement at anytime by editing the path of your text (the path is revealed when you click on the text).If you want the text to move in a curved line use the fountain pen tool and click on the moment of the path you want to edit then adjust the curve to whatever you want to get.

After covering it with a flat layer of brown paint I took green paint and dabbed it on the wood using the texture of the paint and the wood to my advantage to create a grassy look. I regret not using different shades of brown as it would have made it look more realistic

After drawing out the rough shape I went over the edges to correct the angles etc. I painted the background green, then I painted the edges brown. To make the little drawing I first sketched out the scene lightly with pencil, then I went over it with alcohol based markers

“Boxtrolls” 2014

"BoxTrolls" is a story about a town which is being prayed upon by Boxtrolls which are said to kidnap children and eat them. However that is only a rumour spread by a corrupt man(Snatcher) who wants to gain power by eleminating the harmless creatures. The story focuses on a daughter(Winnie) of the most powerfull man in the town and a boy(Egg) who was raised by boxtrolls after they saved him from Snatcher who kidnapped his father (both the man and Egg are presumed dead).

The two children expose the true nature of boxtrolls, Snatcher's true motive and free Egg's father.

In my opinion the movie did a good job at presenting the corrupt officials - not only the snatcher. The father is also portrayed as corrupt as in the first scene he does not listen to his daughter but is more interested in talking to other officials. The same thing repeats later on when he cares more about the giant cheese wheel ending up in the water than the news his daughter has to say. Speaking of the cheese Wheel, he states that to make it he used the money intended for a children's hospital. However in the end we see something unexpected of him as when his daughters life is in danger he decides to give up his position to save her life.

"BoxTrolls" is a stop watch animation which uses hand made models, however the models do not actually have eyes - they are added later on digitally. The main characters and the Boxtrolls are mainly round which shows their friendly nature - however they wear boxes over their bodies. I think the movie uses those boxes to represent the opinion of townsfolk, the Boxtrolls are seen as dangerous and rough but their true kind nature is only revealed when they take of the boxes and save a humans life.

“Frankenweenie” 2012

"Frankenweenie" is about a young boy (Victor) who loses his dog(Sparky) in a car accident and attemps to revive Sparky using lightning.

The movie is based off a popular book by Mary Shelley named "Frankenstein's Monster", where Victor Frankenstein revives a hung murdurer as an attempt to ressurect his passed mother.

But Victor becomes scared of his own creation and abandonds it, the monster then proceeds to live in a forest near a family but when they discover him the creature accidently hurts them.

In "Frankenweenie " the concept of the story is exactly the same, the citizens are also afraid of the power of science - they replace knowledgable science teacher with a useless one so the kids won't get any ideas.

However few things in the story have been changed to make it more suitable for children - they show a strong boy between Victor and Sparky to make the boys actions justificable before killing and reviving him - while in the original Victor revives the murdurer as he experiemented on him but the process was intended for his mother.

The original story ends with Victor dying while the creature lives on, in "Frankenweenie" as by accident all living animals who touched the metal nail in his neck were turned into monsters, but obviously the day was saved by Victor who learned that the dead should stay dead.

The voices of characters are pretty important in development of the character as majority of the film is filled with dialogue, therefore if a young boy had a voice of an old man it would not work well at all. Voice can subconciously make a viewer have an opinion purerly based on their way of speaking. They can also express emotions of characters even when they are talking off screen - in these scenes it's the only indication of their feelings.

After redrawing the collague, i photocopied the drawing ten times. Then on each seperate one I drew different things to create the animation.

I decided to change the hairstyle of my main character and the colour it self as i decided that my colour scheme is rather dark and the blonde hair would not fit as well as dark hair. Also loose hair would not fit the character well as in real combat hair would only get in the way, therefore I made it so its tied back and shaved at the sides.

I used the accidentlal indent tool marks i left for my advantage to create cuts on his body. I painted his right eye in purple to create the black eye.
