there’s a lot of talk about how like alicent loves rhaenyra for herself rather than for ways which she is positioned within the webs of relationships that define their lives, and this is unique from other people’s love for rhaenyra (say daemon, i.e. his love for rhaenyra is so tightly knotted up with his love and resentment for his brother and is thus somehow corrupted or lesser in contrast) and why alicent loves her “more” or more beautifully and purely. this is a boring way to look at it but it’s also clearly untrue! alicent’s entire life has been about serving her king, and the realm by being the king’s wife and bearing his children and caring for him and ruling in his stead in his illness, she is REALLY invested in the divine righteousness of targaryen monarchy (look at the language she uses around aegon’s coronation) and has had to convince herself her suborned life has meaning for how she has served it.

and even at the end of s2 when she is forced to try to escape it…she only does so by a switch of allegiance to rhaenyra as her kingly husband’s rightful heir. viserys CHOSE rhaenyra. this matters to her as much as it does to daemon in 2.08. she believes viserys chose rhaenyra because she loves her (and because she has chosen rhaenyra herself in various ways, from that love) and her love for rhaenyra is now entwined with the fact that viserys has chosen her, that she is queen and deserves to be (alicent’s tenderness dressing her for her investiture as heir, the depth of feeling in “you will make a fine queen.”) her “come with me” alludes to the fact that she’d love rhaenyra if she gave it all up, but rhaenyra doesn’t give it up, because then she wouldn’t be the rhaenyra that alicent loves. my point is that exactly what rhaenyra is - queen of the seven kingdoms - is where the most profound meaning is weighted because of the context of alicent’s upbringing, life, and worldview as a feudal aristocrat, not on some pure self outside of social position. what would that even mean? alicent fell in love with a princess.
