Starry night; bicycle path in the Netherlands

And the Dutchies nailed it again. Dutch artist Daan Roosegaarde made a bicycle path with solar powered LEDs and glow in the dark mosaic stones inspired by Van Gogh's painting "sterrennacht" (starry night). This creation resulted in a beautiful and dreamy art work. Who does not want to cycle over this path? Nuenen, a little place near Eindhoven, that is where you have to be.

Jewel by accident; Art Beekn Kunstgalerie 3.0

How life can be full of surprises! While wandering through Cologne, I found this jewel by accident. This hidden (interactive) art gallery named “Art Beekn; Kunstgalerie 3.0” was situated in the upcoming neighbourhood “Belgisches Viertel”. This gallery presents breath taking pieces, mainly from international street art artists. If you're in the neighbourhood, please take a visit to this gallery. The admission is free and you will not regret it, for sure. Important side note: Maya Hayuk is the name of the artist who made this wall painting.

What can you do with 714 metal balls? In 2008 ART+COM made a unique moving art object for the opening of BMW's museum in Munich. These metal balls were hanging on steel wires and were driven individually (!) by stepper motors. Joseph Klibanski

Joseph Klibansky is one of the youngest and most succesfull 'new media artist' of The Netherlands. At the age of 27 he achieved several high standing awards and his latest work (High Flyers) was sold for almost 35 thousand euros! Klibansky is mainly known by his ideal combination of urban life and nature. When viewing his art, it is like you are in a certain relieving city-like utopia where you have never been before. The contrast of urban against nature makes his work fascinating, while the contrast of realism and idealism makes it confusing. I don't know what in his work captivates me. Is it the use of contrasts, the compressed yet relieving effect or is it that I perceive something new every single time? I don't know, but what I do know is that I love his work. All of them. My first blog post for The Terrace - Floriade 2012; Secretly sustainable

Oh yeah! I wrote my first blog post for The Terrace, a strategy company focused on marketing and sustainability. This blog post is about the sustainable -based on the Cradle to Cradle principles- construction of the Floriade. For people who do not know what the Floriade is. The Floriade is a horticultural world expo and is only held once in 10 years in The Netherlands. However, the post is in Dutch.

De Floriade: Stiekem best duurzaam

  De Floriade, wie kent dit evenement niet. De bekendste tuinbouw expo van Nederland, die eens in de tien jaar georganiseerd wordt, vindt dit jaar van 6 april tot 7 oktober plaats in het gezellige Limburg, te Venlo. De regio Venlo is de eerste regio ter wereld die de Cradle to Cradle principes en doelstellingen toepast voor de toekomstige gebiedsontwikkeling. De Floriade is hiervoor een wereldpodium. Een ideale plek dus voor de C2C Leercommunity om hier op toepasselijke wijze haar driejaarlijks bestaan af te sluiten.

Terwijl buiten de regen gestaag bleef vallen, werd vorige week de Leercommunity in de Innovatoren verwelkomd door Roy Vercoulen, de managing director van het C2C ExpoLAB. Het C2C ExpoLAB helpt organisaties bij het ontdekken en ontwikkelen van mogelijkheden om de C2C principes toe te passen in hun dagelijkse praktijk. Door het begeleiden van projectteams wordt geholpen bij ‘het doen’ van Cradle to Cradle en wordt geprobeerd een synergie te creëren tussen verschillende disciplines.

Vervolgens volgde een presentatie van Michiel Doorn, ingenieur met 25 jaar ervaring en thought leader bij EcoAwareness. Hij vertelde over het duurzame bouwproces van de Floriade en de toepassing van de zogenaamde Venlo duurzaamheidsprincipes, die afgeleid zijn van de Cradle to Cradle principes; 1. We are native to our place 2. The sun is our income 3. Our air, soil and water are healthy 4. We design enjoyment for all generations 5. Our goal is a delightfully diverse, safe, healthy and just world with clean air, water, soil and power - economically and elegantly enjoyed

Een paar voorbeelden: Het personeel voor de Floriade werd lokaal geworven, er is een recyclesysteem geplaatst om plaatselijk regenwater te recyclen en zijn er rioolbuizen van gres gebruikt om de gewonnen grondstof te behouden. Hoewel de Venlo principes zoveel mogelijk zijn toegepast, worden de Cradle to Cradle en andere duurzame elementen op het terrein van de Floriade niet naar de bezoeker gecommuniceerd. Volgens Doorn is dit een bewuste keus geweest om de bezoekers niet duurzaamheid-moe te maken. Wij vinden het echter een gemiste kans: met een verwachte 3 miljoen bezoekers zou de Floriade moeten dienen als hét evenement om consumenten te enthousiasmeren over duurzaamheid en meer naamsbekendheid te genereren rond C2C.

Toen de wolken wegtrokken was het tijd om het Floriadeterrein op eigen houtje te verkennen en de toepassing van de Venlo principes met eigen ogen te zien. We besloten te beginnen met een rit in de kabelbaan. Een mooie kans om het terrein te verkennen en zo onze looproute uit te stippelen. Tijdens het lopen konden we de Venlo principes daadwerkelijk herkennen. De vijvers waar regenwater opgevangen werd en dat als buffer gebruikt werd voor beregening  en de zonnepanelen op het Villa Flora paviljoen, maar ook meer subtiele aspecten werden opgemerkt, zoals de zachte G’s waarmee de medewerkers spraken. Zo waren de principes in duidelijke en minder duidelijke vorm te vinden.

Uiteindelijk sloten we de dag met een borrel in het strandpaviljoen. We bespraken de dag onder het genot van een Gulpener biertje en kwamen we tot de conclusie dat de Floriade eigenlijk veel aan duurzaamheid heeft gedaan. Ze hebben de Venlo duurzaamheidsprincipes goed weten te vertalen en wij vonden het erg leuk en interessant om deze op het gehele terrein terug te vinden – omdat wij wisten waar we moesten kijken. Het is jammer dat de Floriade dit niet naar  alle bezoekers communiceert, want de Floriade is stiekem toch best duurzaam!
