FLATMATES REC LIST

It’s my birthday today, friends! 🎉 So in true hobbit fashion, I’m treating you to this list of my absolute favourite wolfstar trope: flatmates! There’s just something about the close proximity, the tension, the pining: this trope brings the possibilities for the perfect wolfstar fic. So here you have them, my flatmates!Wolfstar recs, many of which have a permanent place in my heart. This list is my baby.

the beasts of wanting, by wholesome_gay (6k)

It’s 1979 and Remus and Sirius are roommates once again. Things left unsaid start getting in the way.

This is probably the fic that defined 2021 for me. I read it an unreasonable amount of times, and loved it just as much each time. The pining, the tension of living together, the prose - it’s all bloody amazing. This is the perfect flatmates fic. Oh lord, wholesome_gay I am forever in your debt for this fic.

In which flat-sharing after graduation entails green-tiled bathrooms, cheap red wine and indolence. In which such novelties might be enough to distract a luckier man from his flatmate in the bedroom over. And in which Sirius Black is not a luckier man.

This fic is heaven. It’s EVERYTHING I want in a fic. A flatmates fic in which Sirius and Remus are friends with benefits, and then proceed to “break up”. The amount of tension, misunderstandings and beautiful pining in this fic is incredible. And the prose is among the best I’ve ever read in fanfiction. Definitely a favourite of mine!

Born Under Punches, by orestesfasting (13k)

The truth is that he’s kept this love on the back burner of his heart for so many years that he’s grown accustomed to the smell and can sometimes almost ignore it completely. He likes to think he’s made peace with the fact that he’ll never know what it tastes like.

Another favourite. This. Is. Amazing. Do you read that prose??? It’s beyond amazing; it’s magnificent! Magical! Another perfect example of the flatmates trope, and why this trope is superior: close proximity, tension, secrets, and endless pining. I’d die for this fic.

A Few Mornings in January, by omgsubtext (7k)

“Exactly,” Remus says, and goes back to his crossword. Sirius’s crossword. Their crossword, Sirius decides, and begins picking the broken pieces of eggshell out of the pan. The wiggling thing gives him a swift kick and then settles down a bit; he imagines it is probably sulking.

An oldie but goodie. In which Remus moves in with Sirius without telling him so. Beautiful and fluffy! Sirius’s inner monologue in this fic is just to die for!

Flat Out, by @squidgilator (6k)

James is moving in with Lily, Peter is moving in with Emmeline. This leaves Remus and Sirius to flat-hunt on their own.

No angst, all fluff. In which flat-hunting leads to some interesting revelations. So cute!

Impossible Things, by accioromulus (14k)

Sirius’s thoughts are a slow-moving, impending disaster. How he wants to pin Remus up against the cupboards, to crowd him into a corner; how he wants to intertwine their fingers, to brush his lips against Remus’s forehead, his jaw. Instead, he settles for ducking his head and sliding a finger through the belt loop of Remus’s jeans—a ridiculous gesture so utterly intimate, even for the pair of them, that he only allows it because he’s just drunk enough.

It was an impossible thing, living with Remus Lupin–but Sirius was doing it anyway.

I’ve included this fic in rec lists before, but I just can’t help myself. This fic is one of my favourite fics ever: it means so much to me. The prose in this fic is pretty much the best I’ve ever read in fanfiction. If you haven’t read this masterpiece already, you definitely should do it now. The flatmates wolfstar fic, if you ask me.

I Want You To, by narrowredoubt (6k)

Sirius makes the morally dubious decision not to correct Remus when he awakens with no memory and assumes that they’re together.

Cute and funny! I mean, who could blame amnesiac Remus for thinking that they’re together, when they live together?

Sirius really wants Remus to move in for some reason. Remus has refused, and there’s no need to tell Sirius why.

The boys aren’t yet living together in this (these*: same story, both POVs) one, but sharing a flat is still the central theme. And so, it has to be included on this list. Also, because it is bloody amazing. wholesome_gay writes the most amazing “love confession” scenes - I don’t know how you do it, but I’m a sucker for it.

when it is said (some say), by jubilantly (20k)

The war is just starting to catch up with them, adulthood is making its uncomfortable presence known, and Sirius considers, at length, his feelings about one Remus Lupin.

Once again, they’re not technically flatmates in this one - but they are in practice. A truly beautifully written fic! First war and being in love. What more could you ask for? Go give it a read!

Remus Lupin isn’t sure what to make of his new flatshare situation. He’s a quiet student with a past, who doesn’t date and is determined to keep it that way. Then he meets his artist flatmate, Sirius Black and his entire world is turned upside down.

Also an old favourite of mine. Perhaps it’s nostalgia, I don’t know, but I love this fic. In which the whole gang lives together (Muggle!au), and Remus can’t help but fall for his lovely flatmate. It’s wonderful.

to tell you the truth, by nightswatch (7k)

Sirius kisses Remus after a night out at the Leaky Cauldron. The next morning, Sirius has forgotten all about it and Remus isn’t quite sure what to tell him.

A drunken kiss, and having to deal with the consequences in a shared flat. Another beautiful example why flatmates fics are wonderful!

Frog and Toad Aren’t Friends Anymore, by swordfishtrombones (10k)

“Is this really all because I wouldn’t live with you?” Remus is still feeling a little fuzzy, but he’s beginning to get chilly and fed up, and he wants to be on common ground. “Some people just aren’t good flatmates. I wasn’t trying to say I liked Adrian and Mary better than you, or whatever you’re thinking.”

Sirius runs a hand through his hair and squints at the streetlight, twisting his mouth like Remus is truly hopeless.

“It hurt,” says Sirius, “my feelings.”

Ok, this isn’t strictly a flatmates fic either (they don’t really live together), but it’s still the main theme of the fic! It’s what they fight about! And it’s wonderfully written: @amanitaphalloides knows how to perfectly write under-the-surface angst without any explicit sadness. Read it!

An incredible, perfectly angsty, friends with benefits to lovers fic. In which Remus is sure that his love for Sirius is unrequited. Features some glorious pining and jealousy, as well as some beautiful prose. I love it!

Quarter Life Crisis, by captainevilpants (13k)

Remus is straight, Sirius is gay and that’s the gospel truth.

A flatmates fic on the lighter, funnier side. This is an incredible fic with the main themes: stupidity (obliviousness) and jealousy. In which Remus realises he might be homophobic - or is that really it?

The Words Beneath Your Door, by Anonymous (12k)

It is 1979, Remus is steadily losing control of his higher functions, and Sirius won’t stop fucking touching him. Perhaps the two are related, but there isn’t enough space left in the cold fusion core of Remus’ brain to parse that out.

A flatmates fic written in first person POV. At first I was a bit sceptic of this, but I quickly realised that this fic is beautifully written! The pining and longing in this fic is out of this world!

He felt something for Sirius, something very strong, but Remus didn’t think it was love. It wasn’t soft and gentle, more like sharp and piercing. It was usually anxiety, since Sirius was reckless and fearless and inordinately prone to jumping off high ledges.

Sirius and Remus smell something they associate with the other in their Amortentia in class, but neither knows what to do about it until Sirius shows a surprising amount of insight and takes matters into his own hands.

Thinking about the strict etiquette around hair in the fire nation, especially the fact that the only people allowed to touch your hair in public are close family.,, thinking about sokka who keeps ruffling zuko’s hair or giving him little braids just because. Zuko who keeps letting him do whatever he wants and wears the little blue beads for DAYS, never bothering to inform sokka about the rules bc it means that then he will stop. And for some reason he just can’t accept that. (Etiquette is dumb anyway.) Once sokka absentmindedly tucked a strand of hair behind Zuko’s ear in front of the whole council and a crusty old noble had a stroke (good.) Everyone thinks they must be courting. the rumors are insane. Meanwhile sokka & zuko are still stuck in the “oblivious idiot” stage of the 50000k slow burn romance, blissfully ignoring the fact that by fire nation standards they’re already boning in front of everyone’s salads.

Be With Me Always - @thehufflebean - a BRILLIANT fic that kept me reading for hours and kinda sobbing most of the way through about Remus dealing (or not dealing so well) with life after Sirius fell through the veil

An Embarrassing Yet Overwhelmingly Wonderful Incident at a Chinese Restaurant - @xinasvoice - I cannot hear the song “Werewolves of London” without thinking of this fic. Literally every single time. 

A Perfect Fit - @jencala - Sirius gets jealous of Remus and the tailor who takes his measurements. Remus gives him a reason not to be jealous.

Familiar - @yumenouveau - just a fun, short fic about Sirius wondering where he knows Remus from. Spoiler alert, it’s from gay porn. 

Up To No Good / Mischief Managed - @littlejeanniebean - the Marauders as a boy band?? What’s not to love?? 

New Ink - @xomarauders an adorable fic about Sirius getting a tattoo that follows the phases of the moon and Remus’ reaction to it 

And finally, really, ANYTHING by @blitheringmcgonagall especially the in-progress A Little Risk (1930s Marauders Murder Mystery AU) and another I’m very fond of Ithildin and Silmë (it’s like Lord of the Rings meets Wolfstar and it is gorgeous and adorable and wonderful, but then so is Mia ❤️)

It was on AO3, it was multi chapter, a non-magic AU, and Remus and Lily didn't go to Hogwarts and I think they homeschool themselves? It starts off when Sirius accidentally texts Remus when he thought he was texting Snape because they were working on a project together? Also, there is Jily, and Lily and James know each other because sometimes Lily would see James just standing in the forest? Also Remus works in a record shop. And there's Dorlene.
