concept art + thought process behind the designs of my tozik and gakvu interpretations ^-^

tozik took a while and was a little daunting to tackle... but he's my favorite, so i didn't mind. and i'm very satisfied with the result!

gakvu was incredibly easy in comparison, her signature does a lot of the work. the most challenging part was how to simplify her fungal coat patterns (i'm still learning lol)

some concept art for my fan obesk, ronik. this was the first time i designed Any obesk stuff - so many iterations and ideas for the clothes lol!! his body + signature came together in just a few drawings though. i'm quite pleased with how he turned out n_n

2022 ^_^ + older summaries for comparison! thoughts below

2022: i think a shift happened around october-november 2022? that’s kind of where i realized 1) i want to be a storyboard artist for real actually 2) being an artist professionally / working in the animation industry isn’t completely impossible like i thought. everything slowly clicked mentally for a few months and then i developed an insatiable drive for learning and improvement haha :] i have a lot to learn still but i’m having fun along the way regardless!

older art: i do want to mention how crazy it is that i stopped drawing for over a year in 2019-2020??? i still remember how rough it was to start drawing again, it almost felt like i was drawing for the first time... i was really nervous and doubtful and my skills felt so unstable T_T. i can’t see myself choosing to “give up” drawing again; i love it too much now... there’s so much to do and learn!!! i’ve been drawing more this month than i was in most months in 2022 even LOL.

...i’ve learned to truly love drawing & learning & working to improve AND have built a healthy relationship with both my art itself and posting it online. im very grateful and so happy about it!! nowadays i don’t constantly wish i was better, i just wish i could draw all the time :}

another animation study + my favorite frames.. these are really fun to do ^_^

reference used (youtube) (same as previous). 12 drawings. done in... 6 or 7 hours??? spread across 2 days in several segments. this was gonna be longer but i unintentionally made a near perfect loop lol?! so i went with that

here’s the first pass i ended up with at the end of day 1:

i didn’t intend to have this much detail... but it’s still better than what i would usually end up doing!, which is spend a ton of time trying to draw every little thing on every frame. allowing myself to draw faster and imperfectly is something i’m working on with these studies. my goal is to draw (less detailed) frames in like 3 minutes, but i’d love to get to around 5-10.

also guitars are still hard to draw. especially animating them turning around TT_TT?!?!? but i’m slowly getting the hang of it

my first animation in toon boom harmony; a rough animation study. i’ve been wanting to practice 1) observational drawing, 2) drawing instruments (guitars..) and people playing them LOL, & 3) animation because i haven’t animated regularly since high school o_o i’m pretty rusty

reference used (youtube). 19 different drawings & done in a bit over 4 hours, i think.

i wanted to start out slow but i learned that nuanced guitar-playing on 4s (6fps) is hard: strumming can be so fast that the hand can appear to stay still or just be a big blur lol?! once i realized this i switched to 2s and 3s like halfway through, as seen in the timeline screenshot. i think the frame rate change is visible in the animation too
