the face he makes when he looks up "I want cersi to know it was me" not malicious compliance but "even in the tiny domain you control you still don't have the power to prevent me from fucking up your day"

the way they try to ditch radar immediately so they can go sit together at the bar
I love watching BJ's first episode, he and Hawkeye are basically flirting constantly while Radar is having an anxiety attack

this is what elevates this episode from soapboxing to deeper commentary
Its about two opposite things being true at the same time….. I cant live with myself if i do it i cant live with myself if i dont i love the people here and i want to erase this whole thing from my mind I need this system to give my life purpose and meaning and my life will never be mine until i leave it………

to me this scene is like the thesis of the show. they are trapped in the military industrial complex. to the army, everyone is interchangeable. the army only cares that Someone is holding the scalpel, they don't care who it is who's doing the holding. if any of them walk away they would just bring someone else in. in the operating room it's like the inverse. when they're operating it doesn't matter that the patient is one of millions of soldiers what matters is the individual in front of them. the characters know they can't stop the war (which is why every time hawk does a Grand Gesture it's painted as irrational and immediately doomed) but in the face of unceasing inhumanity they combat the system by making everyone a person again. to the army, none of them matter. at mash 4077, everyone matters. you can't always dismantle the system but you can maintain your humanity and restore humanity in others. will it ever be enough? no! they will keep coming. but it's all you can do. so you do it.

seriously!!!! if everyone I knew and loved said ":/ you're okay I guess :/ but your predecessor was amazing and he is just Better than you in ways words cannot fully express" I would not just shrug my shoulders and move on with my day I am immediately freaking out because what do you mean you still pine over your ex that you say TO MY FACE is a better version of me?? you don't love me! I'm just a placeholder until you get him back!!!
outing myself as a BJ apologist on main but I too would probably go a little bit insane if my best friend in the entire world (the guy I’ve never gotten along better with anyone else), and allll of my other friends, started telling me that I’m not as funny, smart, or clever as the guy who I replaced somewhere between six months and eight years ago

evil idea
bj, peg, and erin do go to maine. and at first it's great and everyone is having a good time, but hawkeye is getting more and more upset by something, until he blows up at bj and accuses him of " i guess i'm just not that important to you" and bj is like "you are very important to me but so are my wife and child" and then hawkeye goes "oh so you care about them more than me 😠" and bj is like "babe this isn't a competition it's about need and right now my wife and small child need me to be with them" and hawkeye is like oh that makes sense i just needed reassurance that you care and I didn't know how to ask and they make up. with that out of the way the rest of the visit is really good until the goodbyes. we can see the juxtaposition between bj's family crammed together in the small doorframe and hawkeye surrounded by a huge empty house. they make real arrangements for him to visit mill valley, this is not their last goodbye. but when the door closes hawkeye just shrinks in to himself. someone he spent every waking day with now lives three thousand miles away. if I want to continue to be evil we just end there with him looking sad.
nice ending: hawkeye slinks to the telephone to call potter. he asks him how he deals with the way friendships change after the war. "I have to drive three days just to see a guy I shared a toothbrush with" and potter says some folksy version of "yes it is very jarring when this happens but it doesn't mean you don't still care about each other the care just comes out differently" and Hawkeye is like "what if he wakes up one day and realizes he doesn't need me?" and potter is like "son someone doesn't collect hundreds of rocks just for a "see ya layer" because he needs a man, he does it out of genuine friendship. also it's a shorter drive to Boston you can always see Winchester" and Hawkeye is like hmmm both good points (some negative joke about Charles) thank you colonel

some other ones that help are "I don't remember the draft board promising any of us a lot of laughs" (idk it makes me laugh when I get upset that law school is hard) and BJs "radar what's "fair"??" snaps me out of a self pitying spiral
got a bad grade on a legal writing project and the only thing that got me through it was imagining bj and Hawkeye giving me a dad talk about it like the one they give radar about telling frank he's being replaced "you have to show him the orders" and you know what? it worked I saw my professor about it and stopped being avoidant. perhaps cringe but I am a pretty cringe person in general tbh

I kinda think a lot about this pbs interview mike farrell did were talks about being radicalized by his own anger and how just being a person who is conscious of the world around you should make you care about social issues
